This paper presents a real-time air quality monitoring system based on Internet of Things. Air quality is particularly relevant for enhanced living environments and well-being. The Environmental Protection Agency and the World Health Organization have acknowledged the material impact of air quality on public health and defined standards and policies to regulate and improve air quality. However, there is a significant need for cost-effective methods to monitor and control air quality which provide modularity, scalability, portability, easy installation and configuration features, and mobile computing technologies integration. The proposed method allows the measuring and mapping of air quality levels considering the spatial-temporal information. This system incorporates a cyber-physical system for data collection and mobile computing software for data consulting. Moreover, this method provides a cost-effective and efficient solution for air quality supervision and can be installed in vehicles to monitor air quality while travelling. The results obtained confirm the implementation of the system and present a relevant contribution to enhanced living environments in smart cities. This supervision solution provides real-time identification of unhealthy behaviours and supports the planning of possible interventions to increase air quality.

Currently, with the widespread penetration of mobile devices with Internet access, including smartphones, they can allow specific and/or complementary activities in the health field as well as in other commercial sectors. This systematic review examined the impact of mHealth-based for cardiovascular research. The specific aims of the systematic review are to (1) classification of the studies according to the type of research (scientific articles and master’s and doctoral theses) and (2) relationship of studies with topics associated with cardiovascular diseases. This review corresponds to information in scientific journals of high impact. This review intends to respond to the following question: How these research works have evaluated the performance of health mobile applications, with a special interest in cardiac issues? This review of these searches corresponds to an analysis by 14 categories, being these: 1) Scientific paper; 2) Doctoral Thesis; 3) Master thesis; 4) Telemedicine; 5) m-sssshealth, e-health; 6) cardiovascular, coronary diseases, heart failures, cardiopulmonary, cardiac rehabilitation; 7) rural health; 8) prevention and control, protection; 9) wearables; 10) mobile, web applications, app, smartphone, software, platform; 11) mhealth education, training, promotion, formative process; 12) self-management; 13) Multiple Vital Sign Monitoring, medical device, heart rate measurement, health care information systems; 14) health regulatory. It provides evidence of how some apps have been evaluated, and in some cases, the effectiveness of the estimated accuracy is not in line with the real situation. The analysis of these studies allows us to locate the sources of the development of mobile health projects. It also guides us to discover some needs that require new technology implementations.

Passenger flow modeling and station dwelling time estimation are significant elements for railway mass transit planning, but system operators usually have limited information to model the passenger flow. In this paper, an artificial-intelligence technique known as fuzzy logic is applied for the estimation of the elements of the origin-destination matrix and the dwelling time of stations in a railway transport system. The fuzzy inference engine used in the algorithm is based in the principle of maximum entropy. The approach considers passengers’ preferences to assign a level of congestion in each car of the train in function of the properties of the station platforms. This approach is implemented to estimate the passenger flow and dwelling times of the recently opened Line 1 of the Panama Metro. The dwelling times obtained from the simulation are compared to real measurements to validate the approach.

The objective of our work is to propose a new approach called ES-WSN (Energy Efficiency by Switching between roles in WSNs) for the efficient use of energy in wireless sensor networks (WSN). Our solution ES-WSN extends the lifetime of the nodes in the network and guarantees a fair evolution of their level of energy. This is based on the exchanging of roles between relays and sensors nodes based on their positioning and deployment in the WSN. This process is provided according to two parameters from the communication environment. The first one is the distance between the sensors and relays nodes. The second one is the remaining energy of nodes in the network. After evaluation, ES-WSN has achieved better performance compared to two other solutions proposed in the literature.
