Reasonable cultivation is an important part of the protection work of endangered species. The timely and nondestructive monitoring of chlorophyll can provide a basis for the accurate management and intelligent development of cultivation. The image analysis method has been applied in the nutrient estimation of many economic crops, but information on endangered tree species is seldom reported. Moreover, shade control, as the common seedling management measure, has a significant impact on chlorophyll, but shade levels are rarely discussed in chlorophyll estimation and are used as variables to improve model accuracy. In this study, 2-year-old seedlings of tropical and endangered Hopea hainanensis were taken as the research object, and the SPAD value was used to represent the relative chlorophyll content. Based on the performance comparison of RGB and multispectral (MS) images using different algorithms, a low-cost SPAD estimation method combined with a machine learning algorithm that is adaptable to different shade conditions was proposed. The SPAD values changed significantly at different shade levels (p < 0.01), and 50% shade in the orthographic direction was conducive to chlorophyll accumulation in seedling leaves. The coefficient of determination (R2), root mean square error (RMSE), and average absolute percent error (MAPE) were used as indicators, and the models with dummy variables or random effects of shade greatly improved the goodness of fit, allowing better adaption to monitoring under different shade conditions. Most of the RGB and MS vegetation indices (VIs) were significantly correlated with the SPAD values, but some VIs exhibited multicollinearity (variance inflation factor (VIF) > 10). Among RGB VIs, RGRI had the strongest correlation, but multiple VIs filtered by the Lasso algorithm had a stronger ability to interpret the SPAD data, and there was no multicollinearity (VIF < 10). A comparison of the use of multiple VIs to estimate SPAD indicated that Random forest (RF) had the highest fitting ability, followed by Support vector regression (SVR), linear mixed effect model (LMM), and ordinary least squares regression (OLR). In addition, the performance of MS VIs was superior to that of RGB VIs. The R2 of the optimal model reached 0.9389 for the modeling samples and 0.8013 for the test samples. These findings reinforce the effectiveness of using VIs to estimate the SPAD value of H. hainanensis under different shade conditions based on machine learning and provide a reference for the selection of image data sources.

It is crucial to accurately identify precious tree pests in a real, complex natural environment in order to monitor the growth of precious trees and provide growers with the information they need to make effective decisions. However, pest identification in real complex natural environments is confronted with several obstacles, including a lack of contrast between the pests and the background, the overlapping and occlusion of leaves, numerous variations in pest size and complexity, and a great deal of image noise. The purpose of the study was to construct a segmentation method for identifying precious tree pests in a complex natural environment. The backbone of an existing Mask region-based convolutional neural network was replaced with a Swin Transformer to improve its feature extraction capability. The experimental findings demonstrated that the suggested method successfully segmented pests in a variety of situations, including shaded, overlapped, and foliage- and branch-obscured pests. The proposed method outperformed the two competing methods, indicating that it is capable of accurately segmenting pests in a complex natural environment and provides a solution for achieving accurate segmentation of precious tree pests and long-term automatic growth monitoring.

This paper presents a survey on a system that uses digital image processing techniques to identify anthracnose and powdery mildew diseases of sandalwood from digital images. Our main objective is researching the most suitable identification technology for the anthracnose and powdery mildew diseases of the sandalwood leaf, which provides algorithmic support for the real-time machine judgment of the health status and disease level of sandalwood. We conducted real-time monitoring of Hainan sandalwood leaves with varying severity levels of anthracnose and powdery mildew beginning in March 2014. We used image segmentation, feature extraction and digital image classification and recognition technology to carry out a comparative experimental study for the image analysis of powdery mildew, anthracnose disease and healthy leaves in the field. Performing the actual test for a large number of diseased leaves pointed to three conclusions: (1) Distinguishing effects of BP (Back Propagation) neural network method, in all kinds of classical methods, for sandalwood leaf anthracnose and powdery mildew disease are relatively good; the size of the lesion areas were closest to the actual. (2) The differences between two diseases can be shown well by the shape feature, color feature and texture feature of the disease image. (3) Identifying and diagnosing the diseased leaves have ideal results by SVM, which is based on radial basis kernel function. The identification rate of the anthracnose and healthy leaves was 92% respectively, and that of powdery mildew was 84%. Disease identification technology lays the foundation for remote monitoring disease diagnosis, preparing for remote transmission of the disease images, which is a very good guide and reference for further research of the disease identification and diagnosis system in sandalwood and other species of trees.

Leaf chlorophyll content (LCC) is a key indicator in representing the photosynthetic capacity of Populus deltoides (Populus deltoides Marshall). Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) hyperspectral imagery provides an effective approach for LCC estimation, but the issue of band redundancy significantly impacts model accuracy and computational efficiency. Commonly used single feature selection algorithms not only fail to balance computational efficiency with optimal set search but also struggle to combine different regression algorithms under dynamic set conditions. This study proposes an ensemble feature selection framework to enhance LCC estimation accuracy using UAV hyperspectral data. Firstly, the embedded algorithm was improved by introducing the SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) algorithm into the ranking system. A dynamic ranking strategy was then employed to remove bands in steps of 10, with LCC models developed at each step to identify the initial band subset based on estimation accuracy. Finally, the wrapper algorithm was applied using the initial band subset to search for the optimal band subset and develop the corresponding model. Three regression algorithms including gradient boosting regression trees (GBRT), support vector regression (SVR), and gaussian process regression (GPR) were combined with this framework for LCC estimation. The results indicated that the GBRT-Optimal model developed using 28 bands achieved the best performance with R2 of 0.848, RMSE of 1.454 μg/cm2 and MAE of 1.121 μg/cm2. Compared with a model performance that used all bands as inputs, this optimal model reduced the RMSE value by 24.37%. In addition to estimating biophysical and biochemical parameters, this method is also applicable to other hyperspectral imaging tasks.

To determine optimal light conditions for Hopea hainanensis Merr. & Chun seedling growth, this study examined growth and physiological parameters under four shading treatments (0%, 30%, 60%, and 90% irradiance reduction) over 12 months. Shading significantly affected the growth adaptability of seedlings. As shading increased, height, leaf traits (area, length, width), and light saturation point all initially increased, peaked at 30% shading, and then decreased. Conversely, basal diameter, leaf thickness, the maximum net photosynthetic rate, net photosynthetic rate, photosynthetic quantum efficiency, transpiration rate, and stomatal conductance progressively declined as shading increased. Biomass accumulation (in stems and roots), dark respiration rate, and light compensation point exhibited a U-shaped response to shading, being minimized under low or moderate shading. All shading treatments significantly reduced biomass and photosynthetic performance compared to controls. Multivariate analysis identified 0%–30% shading as optimal for cultivation, with 30% shading enhancing photomorphogenic responses while maintaining photosynthetic efficiency. The study findings suggest a novel seedling cultivation protocol for nursery use, in which initial establishment occurs under 30% shading to maximize vertical elongation, followed by the progressive reduction in shading to stimulate radial growth and optimal biomass partitioning. This approach mimics natural canopy gap dynamics, effectively mimicking natural regeneration in tropical rainforest ecosystems.

This paper presents a method for predicting the total nitrogen content in sandalwood using digital image processing. The goal of this study is to provide a real-time, efficient, and highly automated nutritional diagnosis system for producers by analyzing images obtained in forests. Using images acquired from field servers, which were installed in six forest farms of different cities located in northern Hainan Province, we propose a new segmentation algorithm and define a new indicator named “growth status" (GS), which includes two varieties: GSMER (the ratio of sandalwood pixels to the minimum enclosing rectangle pixels) and GSMCC (the ratio of sandalwood pixels to minimum circumscribed circle pixels). We used the error-in-variable model by considering the errors that exist in independent variables. After comparison and analysis, the obtained results show that (1) The b and L channels in the Lab color system have complementary advantages. By combining this system with the Otsu method, median filtering and a morphological operation, sandalwood can be separated from the background. (2) The fitting degree of the models improves after adding the GS indicator and shows that GSMCC performs better than GSMER. (3) After using the error-in-variable model to estimate the parameters, the accuracy and precision of the model improved compared to the results obtained using the least squares method. The optimal model for predicting the total nitrogen content is . This study demonstrates the use of Internet of Things technology in forestry and provides guidance for the nutritional diagnosis of the important sandalwood tree species.
