Forestlands are widely distributed in the dominantly agricultural landscape in western Canada, and they play important ecological functions; such forestlands (e.g., shelterbelts) accumulate soil organic matter and may receive a substantial amount of nitrogen in the form of surface and subsurface runoff from adjacent croplands and become a significant source of emissions of greenhouse gases (GHGs) such as CO2, N2O, and CH4. Biochar and nitrapyrin applications could potentially mitigate GHG emissions, but their co-application in forest soils has not been studied. We investigated the effect of the application of biochars produced at low (300 °C; BC300) and high temperatures (700 °C; BC700) using canola (Brassica napus L.) straw and the effect of their co-application with nitrapyrin on GHG emissions and soil properties in a 35-day laboratory incubation experiment using forest soils collected from five shelterbelt sites. Results showed no significant interaction effect of biochar and nitrapyrin on the global warming potential (GWP) of the GHG emissions, and the GWP was 15.8% lower in the soil with nitrapyrin than without nitrapyrin application treatments. The GWP was significantly enhanced by BC300 addition due to a 26.9% and 627.1% increase in cumulative CO2 and N2O emissions, respectively, over the 35-day incubation. The GWP significantly decreased by BC700 addition due to a 27.1% decrease in cumulative CO2 emissions. However, biochar addition did not affect CH4 emissions, while nitrapyrin decreased CH4 uptake by 50.5%. With BC300 addition, soil-dissolved organic carbon and microbial biomass carbon increased by 26.5% and 33.9%, respectively, as compared to no biochar addition (CK). Soil pH increased by 0.16 and 0.37 units after the addition of BC300 and BC700, respectively. Overall, the effect of biochar and nitrapyrin was independent in mitigating GHG emissions and was related to the type of biochar applied and changes in soil properties.

Sustaining agricultural productivity and soil health under intensive cultivation requires a comprehensive understanding of fertilization effects, particularly on deeper soil layers, which has received limited attention compared to surface soils. This study investigated how different fertilization regimes (inorganic, organic, and combined organic–inorganic fertilizers) influence soil physicochemical properties, microbial diversity, community structure, and functional gene abundances at three soil depths (0–20 cm, 20–40 cm, and 40–60 cm) in a 40-year fertilization experiment. Organic fertilization significantly improved topsoil fertility indicators such as soil organic matter (56.6–109.2%), total nitrogen (66.7–122.0%), total phosphorus (198.6–413.2%), and available phosphorus (984.8–1622.1%) and potassium (35.3–438.1%). Compared with the unfertilized control and nitrogen-only treatment, rice yield increased by 97.1–130.5% under NPK and sole organic fertilization, and further increased by 184.1–255.9% under combined organic–inorganic fertilization. However, fertilization effects diminished with soil depth due to limited nutrient mobility. Microbial diversity significantly decreased with depth and was minimally influenced by fertilization treatments. Microbial community structure varied notably among fertilization treatments at the surface layer, mainly driven by soil nutrients, whereas soil depth had a dominant effect on microbial community structure and compositions. Co-occurrence networks showed the highest complexity in surface soil microbial communities, which declined with soil depth, reflecting potential synergistic and mutualistic relationships in topsoil and the adaptation of microbial communities to nutrient-limited conditions in subsoil. Microbial functional gene analyses highlighted clear depth-dependent distributions, with surface layers enriched in decomposition-related genes, while deeper layers favored anaerobic processes. Overall, long-term fertilization exerted strong depth-dependent effects on soil fertility, microbial community structure, and functional potential in paddy soils.

Tidal flats in eastern China have undergone various transformations into other land-use types. Understanding the impact of land-use conversion on soil properties and microbial communities is crucial for effective ecological conservation efforts. In this study, we compared soil chemical properties and the diversity, composition, and ecological functions of soil bacterial and fungal communities across four land-use types: natural bare land (BL), unused reclaimed tidal land (Phragmites, PL), agricultural land (maize, ML), and shelterbelt land (SL), utilizing next-generation sequencing technology. The results indicated that soil electrical conductivity decreased, while soil organic carbon (SOC) and nutrient contents increased in ML and SL compared to BL and PL. The bacterial Chao1 and fungal Chao1 and Shannon values vary across different land-use types. A higher relative abundance of Acidobacteriota, specifically RB41, was found in ML compared to BL. Principal coordinate and PerMANOVA analysis showed that the composition of bacterial and fungal communities differed significantly across the four land-use types. SOC explained the most variance in both bacterial and fungal communities. Carbon-related functional genes and fungal guilds exhibit greater diversity across the four land-use types compared to nitrogen-related functional genes. In conclusion, the transformation of natural land-use types to managed one greatly altered soil chemical and microbial properties. Our study offers foundational insights into the microbial communities in the typical land-use types of Eastern China’s coastal area. Future studies should emphasize the quantification of human interventions and their impact on soil microbial communities and ecological functions.

Microorganisms play a pivotal role in nutrient cycling in aquatic ecosystems. Understanding bacterial diversity and its functional composition are crucial for aquatic ecology and protection. We investigated the bacterial community structure using 16S rRNA gene amplicons high-throughput sequencing in this study. Results showed that 105 amplicon sequence variants (ASVs) account for 43.8% of the total sequences shared by the Nandu River’s lower, middle, and upper reach and the Songtao Reservoir. The dominant bacterial phylum in the Nandu River and its connected Songtao Reservoir were Proteobacteria and Actinobacteriota, respectively. The highest Chao1 and Shannon index values were found in the lower reach of the Nandu River. Beta diversity analysis showed the divergence in bacterial communities in the Nandu River and Songtao Reservoir, but not in different reaches. Among the water properties, based on the Mantel test, dissolved oxygen, total nitrogen, and nitrite significantly affected the bacterial communities. The functional profiles predicted by Tax4Fun2 showed that metabolism was the most abundant function group. The relative abundance of genetic information processing was significantly higher in the Songtao Reservoir than in the Nandu River, while the relative abundance of human diseases was significantly lower in the Songtao Reservoir than in the Nandu River. The appearance of the xenobiotics biodegradation and metabolism function group requires us to pay more attention to possible water pollution, especially at the upper reach of the Nandu River.

Soil health is a critical factor in sustainable agriculture, particularly in fruit production, where fertilization strategies play a vital role in maintaining the soil quality and enhancing fruit production and quality. This study investigates the effects of different fertilization strategies on soil bacterial communities and honey pomelo (Citrus maxima) properties in Ji’an City, Jiangxi Province, China. Three fertilization treatments were compared: conventional fertilization (CF: botanical organic plus chemical compound fertilizers), organic material fermented fertilization (OF: organic material including duck manure fermented fertilizer plus chemical compound fertilizer), and a special honey pomelo fertilizer (SF: organic material fermented fertilizer only during the whole honey pomelo growing season). Soil samples were collected at two depths (0–20 cm and 20–40 cm) from nine plots (three treatments × three replicates) and analyzed for their soil properties, bacterial community diversity and composition, and fruit characteristics. The results indicate that the OF and SF significantly improved the soil pH, soil organic matter (SOM), and nutrient availability compared to the CF. Additionally, the OF and SF treatments led to a 13.6% and 16.6% increase in fruit weight, respectively, and higher bacterial diversity, although no significant differences were observed in fruit quality parameters such as vitamin C, soluble sugar, and titratable acid. Acidobacteriota, Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, and Chloroflexi were the dominant bacterial phyla. The soil bacterial composition structures were significantly different among the different fertilization strategies, and were well explained by soil properties such as the pH, SOM, total phosphorus, and available nutrients. Our study suggests that applying fermented organic fertilizers which use duck manure as part of the raw materials, either alone or in combination with chemical compound fertilizers, increases honey pomelo fruit production and improves soil health, contributing to the sustainable development of orchards.
