Fekri joined WHO–Yemen as a professional national officer to manage nutrition and noncommunicable diseases in June 2016. In addition to his role in monitoring nutrition, he participated in the interventions of Emergency Humanitarian Action Department at the WHO country office during the crises in Yemen. Fekri was one of the key players who established the electronic Disease Early Warning System in 2013 in Yemen. In 2017, he joined the WHO Somalia country office to strengthen the capacity building of the national staff in the management of severe acute malnutrition. Fekri is a member of the Global Health Policies and Systems Group at the Heidelberg Institute of Global Health. He worked on several research projects focused on disease early warning systems in fragile states and the response to outbreaks such as cholera and diphtheria in Yemen. He coordinated a research subgroup to conduct a Yemen case study as part of the Lancet Committee in Heidelberg on the synergies between universal health coverage, global health security and health promotion. Currently, Fekri is a research associate (Post-Doc), working on a project of strengthening health systems through implementing the quality improvement approaches in close collaboration with GIZ – Yemen and IRIA/Akkon-Hochschule, Berlin. He is also working on research projects addressing preparedness and response, disease control, infodemics and access mortality in the context of COVID-19 in fragile states.
