The faster growth of technology stipulates the rapid development of new products; with the spread of new technologies old ones are outdated and their market demand declines sharply. The combined impact of demand uncertainty and short life-cycles complicate ordering and pricing decision of retailers that leads to a decrease in the profit. This study deals with the joint inventory and dynamic pricing policy for such products considering stochastic price-dependent demand. The aim is to develop a discount policy that enables the retailer to order more at the start of the selling season thus increase the profit and market share of the retailer. A multi-period newsvendor model is developed under the distribution-free approach and the optimal stocking quantities, unit selling price, and the discount percentage are obtained. The results show that the proposed discount policy increases the expected profit of the system. Additionally, the stocking quantity and the unit selling price also increases in the proposed discount policy. The robustness of the proposed model is illustrated with numerical examples and sensitivity analysis. Managerial insights are given to extract significant insights for the newsvendor model with discount policy.

The need for efficient electrical energy consumption has greatly expanded in the process industries. In this paper, efforts are made to recognize the electrical energy consumption in a two-echelon supply chain model with a stochastic lead-time demand and imperfect production, while considering the distribution free approach. The initial investments are made for quality improvement and setup cost reduction, which ultimately reduce electrical energy consumption. The inspection costs are considered in order to ensure the good qualities of the product. Centralized and decentralized strategies are used to analyze the proposed supply chain model. The main objective of this study is to reduce the overall cost through efficient electrical energy consumption in supply chain management by optimizing the lot size, the number of shipments, the setup cost, and the failure rate. A quantity-based transportation discount policy is applied to reduce the expected annual costs, and a service-level constraint is incorporated for the buyer to avoid a stockout situation. The impact of the decision variables on the expected total costs is analyzed, and sensitivity analysis is carried out. The results show a significant reduction in overall cost, with quality improvement and setup cost reduction ultimately reducing electrical energy consumption.

This study is the first to consider a distribution-free approach in a newsvendor model with a transfer of risk and back-ordering. Previously, in many articles, discrete demand is considered. In this model, we consider a newsvendor selling a single seasonal item with price-dependent stochastic demand. Competition in markets has forced the retailer and manufacturer to coordinate in decentralized supply chain management. A coordination contract is made between a retailer and manufacturer to overcome the randomness of demand for a short-life-cycle product. The retailer pays an additional amount per product to transfer the risk of unsold items. The manufacturer bears the cost of unsold products from the retailer. Shortages are allowed with back-ordering costs during the season. The distribution-free model is developed and solved with only available demand data of mean and standard deviation. Stackelberg’s game approach is used to calculate the optimal ordering quality and price. This model aims to maximize expected profit by optimizing unit selling price and ordered quantity through coordination. To illustrate that the model is robust, numerical experiment and sensitivity analyses are conducted for both decentralized and centralized supply chain management. For applicability of the model in the real-world business scenario, managerial insights are provided with sensitivity analysis.

Integrating green supply chain management (GSCM) with global sustainability initiatives has emerged as a critical area of research due to escalating environmental challenges and the need for sustainable industrial practices. However, empirical synthesis on the effectiveness of GSCM in achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) remains limited. This study aims to fill this gap by conducting a comprehensive meta-analysis of 37 peer-reviewed articles to evaluate the role of GSCM practices in advancing key SDGs, including responsible consumption and production (SDG 12), climate action (SDG 13), and partnerships for the goals (SDG 17). Using JASP software and the Hunter-Schmidt method, the study provides robust quantitative evidence that GSCM practices—particularly green procurement, waste minimization, and resource efficiency—positively and significantly contribute to environmental sustainability, economic performance (SDG 8), and stakeholder collaboration. The results also reveal heterogeneity across regions and industries, underscoring the importance of contextual strategies. This study offers novel insights by systematically quantifying GSCM’s multi-dimensional impact on the SDGs and provides evidence-based recommendations for policymakers, business leaders, and sustainability advocates. The originality of this research lies in its integrative approach, combining statistical rigor with sustainability policy relevance, to demonstrate GSCM’s transformative potential in achieving global sustainability goals.
