This paper presents a quality evaluation study of point cloud codecs that have been recently standardised by the MPEG committee. In particular, a subjective experiment to assess their performance in terms of bitrate against visual quality is designed and realized in four independent laboratories. The experimental setup of each laboratory varies; yet, the obtained subjective scores exhibit high inter laboratory correlation, confirming that the adopted assessment protocol is robust to equipment selection and viewing conditions, ensuring reliability and facilitating repeatability. Our study confirms the superior compression performance of the MPEG V-PCC, when compared to MPEG G-PCC, in the case of static contents. Finally, results from a benchmark of the most popular objective quality metrics using the obtained subjective scores as ground truth, reveal that the point2plane with mean square error is the most accurate quality predictor, closely followed by the point2point also using mean square error as distance measure.

Light Field (LF) imaging is a plenoptic data collection method enabling a wide variety of image post-processing such as 3D extraction, viewpoint change and digital refocusing. Moreover, LF provides the capability to capture rich information about a scene, e.g., texture, geometric information, etc. Therefore, a quality assessment model for LF images is needed and poses significant challenges. Many LF Image Quality Assessment (LF-IQA) metrics have been recently presented based on the unique characteristics of LF images. The state-of-the-art objective assessment metrics have taken into account the image content and human visual system such as SSIM and IW-SSIM. However, most of these metrics are designed for images and video with natural content. Additionally, other models based on the LF characteristics (e.g., depth information, angle information) trade high performance for high computational complexity, along with them possessing difficulties of implementation for LF applications due to the immense data requirements of LF images. Hence, this paper presents a novel content-adaptive LF-IQA metric to improve the conventional LF-IQA performance that is also low in computational complexity. The experimental results clearly show improved performance compared to conventional objective IQA metrics, and we also identify metrics that are well-suited for LF image assessment. In addition, we present a comprehensive content-based feature analysis to determine the most appropriate feature that influences human visual perception among the widely used conventional objective IQA metrics. Finally, a rich LF dataset is selected from the EPFL dataset, allowing for the study of light field quality by qualitative factors such as depth (wide and narrow), focus (background or foreground) and complexity (simple and complex).

Distributed video coding (DVC) is an attractive and promising solution for low complexity constrained video applications, such as wireless sensor networks or wireless surveillance systems. In DVC, visual quality consistency is one of the most important issues to evaluate the performance of a DVC codec. However, it is the fact that the quality of the decoded frames that is achieved in most recent DVC codecs is not consistent and it is varied with high quality fluctuation. In this paper, we propose a novel DVC solution named Joint exploration model based DVC (JEM-DVC) to solve the problem, which can provide not only higher performance as compared to the traditional DVC solutions, but also an effective scheme for the quality consistency control. We first employ several advanced techniques that are provided in the Joint exploration model (JEM) of the future video coding standard (FVC) in the proposed JEM-DVC solution to effectively improve the performance of JEM-DVC codec. Subsequently, for consistent quality control, we propose two novel methods, named key frame quantization (KF-Q) and Wyner-Zip frame quantization (WZF-Q), which determine the optimal values of the quantization parameter (QP) and quantization matrix (QM) applied for the key and WZ frame coding, respectively. The optimal values of QP and QM are adaptively controlled and updated for every key and WZ frames to guarantee the consistent video quality for the proposed codec unlike the conventional approaches. Our proposed JEM-DVC is the first DVC codec in literature that employs the JEM coding technique, and then all of the results that are presented in this paper are new. The experimental results show that the proposed JEM-DVC significantly outperforms the relevant DVC benchmarks, notably the DISCOVER DVC and the recent H.265/HEVC based DVC, in terms of both Peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) performance and consistent visual quality.

Wyner-Ziv video coding (WZVC) has been gaining many attentions in recent decades due to its low computational complexity and error resiliency benefits, notably when compared to traditional video coding standards such as H.264/AVC or High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) standards. In a Wyner-Ziv video coding scheme, the compression efficiency can be controlled by the length of the group of pictures (GOP) which typically consists of the two key and several WZ frames. However, the current Wyner-Ziv video coding solutions usually employ a fixed GOP size or simple adaptive GOP size mechanisms, which depend on some heuristic features extracted from video content. To address the limitation of the current GOP size adaptation solutions, we propose in this paper a novel Artificial Intelligence based GOP size adaptation mechanism and integrate it into the most advanced transform domain Wyner-Ziv video coding (TDWZ) architecture. In the proposed GOP size adaptation mechanism, the proper GOP size is learnt from the correlation between video features and the optimal compression performance. The power of machine learning techniques is used to select the most suitable video features and the model of GOP size and compression performance correlation. Experimental results shown that, using the obtained GOP size adaptation mechanism, the TDWZ codec achieved a better compression performance when compared to relevant benchmarks.

In the industry 4.0 era, video applications such as surveillance visual systems, video conferencing, or video broadcasting have been playing a vital role. In these applications, for manipulating and tracking objects in decoded video, the quality of decoded video should be consistent because it largely affects the performance of the machine analysis. To cope with this problem, we propose a novel perceptual video coding (PVC) solution in which a full reference quality metric named video multimethod assessment fusion (VMAF) is employed together with a deep convolutional neural network (CNN) to obtain consistent quality while still achieving high compression performance. First of all, in order to achieve the consistent quality requirement, we propose a CNN model with an expected VMAF as input to adaptively adjust the quantization parameters (QP) for each coding block. Afterwards, to increase the compression performance, a Lagrange coefficient of rate-distortion optimization (RDO) mechanism is adaptively computed according to rate-QP and quality-QP models. The experimental results show that the proposed PVC solution has achieved two targets simultaneously: the quality of video sequence is kept consistently with an expected quality level and the bit rate saving of the proposed method is higher than traditional video coding standards and the relevant benchmark, notably with around 10% bitrate saving on average.

Light field (LF) imaging introduces attractive possibilities for digital imaging, such as digital focusing, post-capture changing of the focal plane or view point, and scene depth estimation, by capturing both spatial and angular information of incident light rays. However, LF image compression is still a great challenge, not only due to light field imagery requiring a large amount of storage space and a large transmission bandwidth, but also due to the complexity requirements of various applications. In this paper, we propose a novel LF adaptive content frame skipping compression solution by following a Wyner–Ziv (WZ) coding approach. In the proposed coding approach, the LF image is firstly converted into a four-dimensional LF (4D-LF) data format. To achieve good compression performance, we select an efficient scanning mechanism to generate a 4D-LF pseudo-sequence by analyzing the content of the LF image with different scanning methods. In addition, to further explore the high frame correlation of the 4D-LF pseudo-sequence, we introduce an adaptive frame skipping algorithm followed by decision tree techniques based on the LF characteristics, e.g., the depth of field and angular information. The experimental results show that the proposed WZ-LF coding solution achieves outstanding rate distortion (RD) performance while having less computational complexity. Notably, a bit rate saving of 53% is achieved compared to the standard high-efficiency video coding (HEVC) Intra codec.
