Let G be a graph with no isolated vertex and f:V(G)→{0,1,2} a function. Let Vi={v∈V(G):f(v)=i} for every i∈{0,1,2}. The function f is an outer-independent Roman dominating function on G if V0 is an independent set and every vertex in V0 is adjacent to at least one vertex in V2. The minimum weight ω(f)=∑v∈V(G)f(v) among all outer-independent Roman dominating functions f on G is the outer-independent Roman domination number of G. This paper is devoted to the study of the outer-independent Roman domination number of a graph, and it is a contribution to the special issue “Theoretical Computer Science and Discrete Mathematics” of Symmetry. In particular, we obtain new tight bounds for this parameter, and some of them improve some well-known results. We also provide closed formulas for the outer-independent Roman domination number of rooted product graphs.

Let G be a graph with no isolated vertex and f:V(G)→{0,1,2} a function. If f satisfies that every vertex in the set {v∈V(G):f(v)=0} is adjacent to at least one vertex in the set {v∈V(G):f(v)=2}, and if the subgraph induced by the set {v∈V(G):f(v)≥1} has no isolated vertex, then we say that f is a total Roman dominating function on G. The minimum weight ω(f)=∑v∈V(G)f(v) among all total Roman dominating functions f on G is the total Roman domination number of G. In this article we study this parameter for the rooted product graphs. Specifically, we obtain closed formulas and tight bounds for the total Roman domination number of rooted product graphs in terms of domination invariants of the factor graphs involved in this product.

The Spanish higher education system needs to adapt to the requirements of the European Higher Education Area and to this end, it is necessary for higher education institutions to improve the quality of university education, leading to an increase in competency-based learning activities aimed at developing the skills of graduates. Since university graduates face a large number of requirements when entering the labour market, they need to develop and constantly update the appropriate skills to carry out their work properly. This paper aims to address two fundamental questions. First, do engineering graduates need acquired skills in Total Quality Management (TQM) to perform their jobs successfully? Secondly, which job profile requires the highest level of Total Quality Management training and knowledge? We carried out different multivariate statistical analyses using a sample of engineering graduates who had been in the labour market for two years. The results show that knowledge of this type of management philosophy is necessary for adequate job performance. The job profile requiring the highest level of skills in TQM is described.

Let G be a graph without isolated vertices. A function f : V ( G ) → { 0 , 1 , 2 } is a total Roman dominating function on G if every vertex v ∈ V ( G ) for which f ( v ) = 0 is adjacent to at least one vertex u ∈ V ( G ) such that f ( u ) = 2 , and if the subgraph induced by the set { v ∈ V ( G ) : f ( v ) ≥ 1 } has no isolated vertices. The total Roman domination number of G, denoted γ t R ( G ) , is the minimum weight ω ( f ) = ∑ v ∈ V ( G ) f ( v ) among all total Roman dominating functions f on G. In this article we obtain new tight lower and upper bounds for γ t R ( G ) which improve the well-known bounds 2 γ ( G ) ≤ γ t R ( G ) ≤ 3 γ ( G ) , where γ ( G ) represents the classical domination number. In addition, we characterize the graphs that achieve equality in the previous lower bound and we give necessary conditions for the graphs which satisfy the equality in the upper bound above.

It is known that control charts based on equal tail probability limits are ARL biased when the distribution of the plotted statistic is skewed. This is the case for p‐Charts that serve to monitor processes on the basis of the binomial distribution. For the particular case of the standard three‐sigma Shewhart p‐Chart, which is built on the basis of the binomial to normal distribution approximation, this ARL‐biased condition is particularly severe, and it greatly affects its monitoring capability. Surprisingly, in spite of this, the standard p‐Chart is still widely used and taught. Through a literature search, it was identified that several, simple to use, improved alternative p‐Charts had been proposed over the years; however, at first instance, it was not possible to determine which of them was the best. In order to identify the alternative that excelled, an ARL performance comparison was carried out in terms of their ARL bias severity level (ARLBSL) and their In‐Control ARL (ARL0). The results showed that even the best performing alternative charts would often be ARL‐biased or have nonoptimal ARL0. To improve on the existing alternatives, the “Kmod p‐Chart” was developed; it offers easiness of use, superior ARL performance, and a simple and effective method for verifying its ARL‐bias condition.

Based on an extensive literature review we have selected factors critical for Lean Six Sigma implementation success. Four variables were selected to be used as output variables measuring this project success: project on time completion, achievement of financial goals, sigma level achieved (that was measured using Defects per Million Opportunities, DPMO), and overall project success. Using empirical data from 256 Lean Six Sigma Projects, we present the model developed and identify significant factors for Lean Six Sigma implementation success. Empirical results, which were collected during Lean Six Sigma implementation in 39 business units of an Automotive Sector Company in North America and Europe, were analysed using Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA) and General Linear Model (GLM). Two main factors were found as positively linked with the different aspects of project success: the competency of the Black Belts team and the management support to the project.

Deming's chain reaction is a well-known proposal from Dr. W.E. Deming, in which he explains the positive effect of improving quality in different aspects of an organisation's activities and performance. Recognising and enhancing the value of Deming ideas, in this paper chain reaction is reevaluated and adapted to environments different to those considered by Deming, specifically to those where competition is not the motto for quality improvement. Three economic situations are considered: open competitive markets (as Deming considered); markets with no or very limited competition; and public services or organisations not oriented to profits but to cover social demands. Two additional versions of the chain reaction are proposed based in Deming's original, and finally a comprehensive chain reaction is presented, adequate to any type of economic environment. The paper enhances the strength and power of Deming's ideas, showing its ability to adapt to scenarios different to those originally considered.

Highlights•Authors have investigated an underground water supply network of tunnels and cisterns located in the village of Alcudia de Crespins (Spain).•The system, with one km of tunnels, provide water to houses in a village in East Spain. Until 1955 it was serving water to citizens.•The network has medieval origin, linked with the supply of water to an old palace.•Tunnels feed a public cistern and private cisterns located under city houses.•It is an unusual (unique to our knowledge) example of water distribution system. AbstractThe city of Alcudia de Crespins, in the centre of the Valencia province (east of Spain), has an exceptional water distribution system that in the past served fresh water to many houses in the town. This system is formed by more than one km of tunnels and underground cisterns, and dates probably in the late medieval times, while it has been in use and suffering modifications until 1955. This paper presents the structure and characteristics of such exceptional system, and explains the functioning parameters of the infrastructure. Graphical abstract

Quality of a product is often measured through various quality characteristics generally correlated. Multivariate control charts are a response to the need for quality control in such situations. If quality characteristics are qualitative, it sometimes happens that the product quality is defined by linguistic variables – where quality levels are represented by some specific words – and product units are classified into several linguistic forms categories, depending on the degree of fulfilment of expectations, creating a situation of fuzzy classifications. This study first reviews the concepts found in the literature on the development of fuzzy multivariate control charts. We propose a method to control these fuzzy quality evaluations, with correlated multiple attributes quality characteristics, through the use of a Hotelling T2 control chart.

The economic crisis that currently affects some Western countries has reduced the employability of graduates in the construction industry. Nevertheless, many young professionals consider this situation as an opportunity to further their training, thus the higher enrollment in graduate programs in the construction industry. In light of this scenario, the authors of this paper sought to identify students’ perceptions of training gaps that affect their employability. The research was based on a case study, conducted in a Spanish graduate program (M.Sc.) in construction management during two consecutive academic years; a questionnaire survey was given to all of the enrolled students at the beginning of the first semester. The statistical analyses consisted of a principal-component analysis of the 21 variables listed as possible explanations for their graduates’ unemployment and an analysis of variance based on the previously noted principal components. Respondents recognized the intrinsic internal barriers that jeopardized their job opportunities, such as their unwillingness to move to another country, their lack of knowledge of a foreign language and communication skills, or their preferences for only well-paid and comfortable jobs. Other perceived problems were related to economic policy, training gaps, labor market structure, graduate surplus, and setbacks related to business management.
