The scientific literature on mental health has found an association between physical activity and emotional wellbeing and recommends active leisure activities as a way of keeping stress under control. The purpose of this research study is to analyze the level of anxiety, the symptoms of depression and the level of self-esteem of people practicing speleology, as well as possible gender differences. This paper also attempts to understand whether self-esteem is associated with the presence of symptoms of depression in speleologists and whether anxiety has a mediating effect. We conduct a cross-sectional and descriptive research study with a sampling of 105 adult speleologists. The results reveal that the total mediation model is applicable, as self-esteem has a significant indirect association with depression through trait anxiety, as well as a partial mediation model that is applicable through state anxiety. This means that speleologists with high levels of self-esteem, who appreciate and value themselves adequately, reveal lower levels of trait anxiety, and this negatively influences their levels of depression (that is, a lower level of depressive symptoms). At the same time, speleologists with high levels of self-esteem, who appreciate and value themselves adequately, also reveal lower levels of state anxiety, which again has a negative impact on their levels of depression (with fewer symptoms of depression). Emotions such as anxiety, self-esteem, depression and their collateral effects are international topics of interest, which are relevant for people from all sporting backgrounds; therefore, value should be placed on supporting and carrying out further research into this topic.

In this paper we build on the residual control theory and examine the interdependence of countries’ institutional environment and firms’ nonmarket positions towards firm corruption. Based on World Bank data from emerging economies spanning from 2006 to 2018, we find that the interaction between lower quality market-supporting institutions and firm’s weaker positions makes firms more vulnerable to bribery requests, consequently leading to their involvement in bribery. This mediated interaction effect occurs due to the interplay between the demand- and supply-side of corruption, highlighting how firms’ relative nonmarket positions and the institutional context jointly shape the firms’ incentive for bribery activities.

This paper analyzes the impact of terrorism hazard on the performance of private participation infrastructure projects. Applying transaction cost theory, we hypothesize that terrorism hazard has a negative relationship with infrastructure project completion, and that host government accountability and investor experience with terrorism hazard have opposing impacts on this relationship. Host government accountability, we argue, produces higher indirect costs of managing terrorism hazard, which reduces investor confidence, and reinforces the negative relationship between terrorism hazard and the probability of satisfactory project completion. Conversely, investor’s experience with terrorism hazard increases investor confidence and hence partially mitigates the negative consequences of terrorism hazard which hamper project completion. Hence, the impact of terrorism is weakened for projects led by firms from higher terrorism hazard countries. We find support for our hypotheses using a sample of 5,083 projects in 135 countries from 2002 to 2017.

Background: we have based our study on the fact that the labour market is progressively becoming more accessible for people with disabilities. This investigation aims to identify the factors that contribute to high levels of work-related stress in a group of disabled individuals in order to develop policies to prevent it and promote the health of the workforce. Methods: 131 workers from two Special Employment Centres (SECs) of the Amica Association in Cantabria (Spain) participated in the study. Sociodemographic and job-related variables were collected using a questionnaire. Work-related stress was evaluated using the Maslach Burnout Inventory General Survey (MBI-GS), which analyzes emotional exhaustion, cynicism and personal efficacy. Results: the main explanatory factors for higher levels of emotional exhaustion were more than 5 years of service in the company (OR 3.235–IC 95% 1.392–7.519; p = 0.006) and bad job satisfaction (OR 7.615–IC 95% 2.467–23.503; p = 0.0001); higher levels of cynicism were also explained by bad job satisfaction (OR 8.599–IC 95% 2.481–29.799; p = 0.001). Conclusions: future research is needed to facilitate the design of company policies and promote the well-being of the disabled population in the workplace, to avoid pathological conditions such as burnout syndrome.

Purpose In this paper the authors examine evidence on exchange rate predictability through commodity prices for a set of countries categorized as commodity import- and export-dependent developed and emerging countries. Design/methodology/approach The authors perform in-sample and out-of-sample forecasting analysis. The commodity prices are modeled to predict the exchange rate and to analyze whether this commodity price model can perform better than the random walk model (RWM) or not. These two models are compared and evaluated in terms of exchange rate forecasting abilities based on mean squared forecast error and Theil inequality coefficient. Findings The authors find that primary commodity prices better predict exchange rates in almost two-thirds of export-dependent developed countries. In contrast, the RWM shows superior performance in the majority of export-dependent emerging, import-dependent emerging and developed countries. Originality/value Previous studies examined the exchange rate of commodity export-dependent developed countries mainly. This study examines both developed and emerging countries and finds for which one the changes in prices of export commodities (in case of commodity export-dependent country) or prices of major importing commodities (in case of import-dependent countries) can significantly predict the exchange rate.

This paper investigates the impact of within-country linguistic diversity on the performance of private participation infrastructure projects. In view of the relevance of language heterogeneity in Asia, we first test a sample of 2921 projects in 7 countries in this region from 1990 to 2013. The findings indicate that higher linguistic diversity is associated with a lower likelihood of project success, and that this negative effect is weakened when the project is greenfield. In contrast, we find no significant effect for projects that include government ownership. Subsequently, we explore the differences between domestic versus foreign projects, as well as a larger sample of countries worldwide. The study contributes to the current debate in the literature by pointing out that within-country linguistic diversity can be a threat to private participation projects, offering useful managerial recommendations on how to reduce this threat.

The aim of this study was to understand the role of school satisfaction on life satisfaction, according to gender, age, body mass index (BMI), and physical activity (PA) level. This was a cross-sectional descriptive study, carried out on 2823 adolescents (1396 boys and 1427 girls), aged between 12 and 16. A specific questionnaire to measure life satisfaction (Brief Multidimensional Student Life Satisfaction Scale (BMSLSS)), a questionnaire to measure satisfaction with school (“Life circumstances of Young people: School”), and the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) were used to analyze PA practice. Gender, age, and BMI were used as control variables. In general, the main results showed that school satisfaction had a clear role in life satisfaction. Similarly, the findings allowed us to conclude that the role of school satisfaction on life satisfaction was more evident in male school children, those who were older, or those who have a higher BMI. The regular practice of PA enhanced school satisfaction and its role on life satisfaction. Therefore, it is very important to assess the importance of school satisfaction as a determinant of quality of life and the adoption of healthy habits, recognizing the fundamental role of teachers in this regard.

Starting in 1995, the GLOBE (Global Leadership and Organizational Behavior Effectiveness) project conducted a comprehensive study of cultural values and leadership ideals in 62 countries. According to GLOBE, Turkey belongs to the Middle Eastern cluster. However, in the past 23 years, Turkey has undergone dramatic social, economic, and political changes that may have affected societal culture and leadership preferences. With the goal to explore the impact of these changes, this study surveys 237 Turkish managers. Results show that four cultural dimensions shifted down one level in their bands. Moreover, compared to 1995, participants indicate higher preference for autonomous and participative leadership.

This paper examines the role of the quality of institutions, financial development and FDI on current account imbalances, which narrowed during the Global Financial Crisis. In doing so, we utilize (i) a sample of 49 advanced and emerging economies during 1984–2014; (ii) a novel three-clustered indices of institutional quality and (iii) two measures of financial development, the share of FDI and a measure of financial crisis in addition to standard determinants of the current account. We find that the better the quality of institutions and the greater the financial development, the larger are current account deficits; meanwhile, FDI contributes to boost current account balances. Moreover, financial crisis episodes tend to improve current account balances, particularly for countries that are highly open to trade and to receive FDI, as in the case of advanced economies and East Asian countries.

This work explores determinants of public satisfaction with urban solid waste collection service quality of the city of Burgos (Spain). A Structural Equation Modeling is conducted based on the indicators of the service quality offered by the SEMAT S.A. company and the dimensions offered by SERVQUAL service quality model. The findings show that Assurance and Responsiveness have a positive and significant effect on public satisfaction. However, Reliability, Empathy, and Tangible have no significant effect. Regarding Assurance, cleanliness of pavements and cleanliness of walkways are the indicators that provide a significant influence on this dimension. Otherwise, daily collection of organic waste and daily collection of selective waste are the indicators that provide a significant effect on the Responsiveness dimension. We can emphasize that increasing public satisfaction can be achieved by increasing the frequency of pavements and walkways cleanliness and the frequency of organic and selective waste collection and that this has a clear relationship with the increase in costs and pollution impact. Find a balance between frequency of collection and cost and pollution is necessary. Despite this, the significance of these indicators is strong enough to motivate decision-makers to address their efforts and investments in improving them, enabling thus an effective and efficient service at the required level of quality and adjusting their strategies to increase public satisfaction. Moreover, the study highlights that 84.37% of citizens are satisfied with the service. In addition to this practical validation at the management level, we also discuss environmental and sustainability repercussions.

This paper investigates how firms' political capabilities and countries' political structures affect firms' lobbying decision. We use a cross-country, firm-level dataset that covers more than 22,013 firms in 46 countries to discover that a firm's individual- and collective-level political capabilities are positively associated with lobbying. In contrast, the degree of checks and balances among bureaucrats in a country's political market is negatively associated with the firm's possibility of lobbying. Finally, we also find that the positive role of a firm's political capabilities in lobbying is mitigated by the degree of checks and balances among bureaucrats. This study contributes to the literature of corporate political activities by filling the research gaps (1) as considering both horizontal and vertical checks and balances among bureaucrats in political markets, and (2) as simultaneously considering firms' individual and collective political capabilities, by taking one more conceptual step on the literature of contingent dynamic capabilities and lobbying.

Investments in the telecom industry are often conducted through private participation projects, allowing a group of investors to build and/or operate large infrastructure projects in the host country. As governments progressively removed the barriers to foreign ownership in this sector, these investment consortia have become increasingly international. Obviously, an accurate and early prediction of the success of such projects is very useful. Softcomputing can certainly contribute to address such challenge. However, the error rate obtained by classifiers when trying to forecast the project success is high due to the class imbalance (success vs. fail). To overcome such problem, present paper proposes the application of classifiers (Support Vector Machines and Random Forest) to data improved by means of data balancing techniques (both oversampling and undersampling). Results have been obtained on a real-life and publicly-available dataset from the World Bank.

Governments are increasingly relying on private participation projects and foreign ownership to access technology and capital in infrastructure projects. As a result, the ubiquity of these projects in all regions of the world is a reality that has caught the attention of both managers and scholars. Predicting the final status (success/failure) of these projects in advance is a key element to be taken into account when deciding about participation. To support this kind of decision, the present paper proposes a multidimensional study where a set of heterogeneous classifiers have been applied to forecast the final success of private participation projects. They are applied to a real-life dataset, comprising information from the World Bank about projects all over the world and within four sectors (Energy, Telecommunication, Transport, and Water Sewerage). Classification results are compared under the scope of the sector and host region of the projects. Results show that the predictability of the success of private participation projects depends on the specific industry and region on which the project operates, with projects in the Telecommunication sector and Sub-Saharan Africa exhibiting the highest rates.

As entrepreneurial interest is believed to represent a causal factor increasing entrepreneurship, research has begun to explore how family systems affect youth entrepreneurial interests. In the present study, we attempt to identify different types of family influence on the entrepreneurial interests of young people. A questionnaire was used to obtain data from 1633 Spanish adolescents (15 to 18 years old) and another questionnaire was used to obtain data from 839 parents. Principal component analysis identified unique family types and revealed that they have differential associations to entrepreneurial interest among youth. These findings reaffirm the influence of family on the entrepreneurial ecosystem and the promotion of an entrepreneurial family culture. This study further suggests that early attention should focus on the detection of entrepreneurial interest among youth so that actions can be implemented in the families to incentivize an entrepreneurial family culture.

Research summary This study combines transaction cost economics and network learning literature to examine the moderating effect of knowledge from internal versus external local supplier on subsidiary‐level intrafirm trade within multinational enterprises' (MNEs') global value chain networks. We conceptualize knowledge in a multidimensional way, disentangling it into institutional knowledge in high‐risk countries and internationalization knowledge in all countries. Empirical results from 5,660 observations of 487 Korean MNEs (1995–2013) show that MNEs' institutional knowledge with external local suppliers in high‐risk countries has a stronger negative effect on the relationship between political risk and subsidiaries' intrafirm trade integration than with internal suppliers. Internationalization knowledge from external local suppliers in all countries also has a stronger negative effect on the relationship between political risk and subsidiaries' intrafirm trade integration than with internal suppliers. Managerial summary A host country's political risk is a critical consideration for MNEs when entering institutionally hazardous countries. This study shows how MNEs' strategies for operational integration of subsidiaries within global value chain networks respond to challenges of political risk in host countries. We studied 5,660 observations of 487 Korean MNEs (1995–2013) and found that MNE capabilities to manage under institutionally hazardous conditions can be developed through various types of knowledge from internal versus external local suppliers, and, consequently, operational integration in the MNE global value chain in high‐risk countries is less needed. MNEs need to acquire and expand new business opportunities in host countries by accepting heterogeneity through varying institutional and internationalization knowledge and active partnership development based on their global value chain networks.
