Nanosized titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles were used for the photocatalytic reduction of hexavalent chromium in the presence of formic acid. The photoreduction of Cr(VI) in the absence of formic acid was quite slow. When formic acid was added in the chromium solution as the hole scavenger, a rapid photocatalytic reduction of Cr(VI) was observed, owing to the consumption of hole and the acceleration of the oxidation reaction. Furthermore, three commercial TiO2 nanoparticles (AEROXIDE® P25; Ishihara Sangyo ST-01; FUJIFILM Wako Pure Chemical Corp.) were evaluated for the photoactivity of reduction of Cr(VI).

Ag-doped ZnO nanocomposites are successfully synthesized at different calcination temperatures and times through a simple, effective, high-yield and low-cost mechanochemical combustion technique. Effects of calcination temperature on the crystallinity and optical properties of Ag/ZnO nanocomposites have been studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV−visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV-DRS), photoluminescence spectroscopy (PL) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The XRD patterns of the synthesized Ag/ZnO exhibit a well-crystalline wurtzite ZnO crystal structure. The grain size of Ag/ZnO nanocomposites is found to be 19 and 46 nm at calcination temperatures of 400 °C and 700 °C, respectively. The maximum absorption in the UV region is obtained for Ag/ZnO nanocomposites synthesized at a calcination temperature of 500 °C for 3 h. The peak position of blue emissions is almost the same for the nanocomposites obtained at 300–700 °C calcination temperatures. The usual band edge emission in the UV is not obtained at 330 nm excitation. Band edge and blue band emissions are observed for the use of low excitation energy at 335–345 nm.

A dye-sensitization technique was applied to effective catalysts—TiO2 and ZnO—under fluorescent light irradiation for Orange II (OII) and Methyl Orange (MO) degradations. Treatments were carried out at different time periods using 20 mg of catalysts and 30 mL of 5 mg/L of OII and MO. The degradation efficiency of OII and MO increased with increasing irradiation time under irradiation of fluorescent light. The photocatalytic activity of ZnO nanoparticles was better compared with that of TiO2 for MO; and the ZnO activity was the same as TiO2 for OII photodegradation. Kinetic behavior was evaluated in terms of the Langmuir–Hinshelwood model (pseudo-first order kinetic). The possible mechanism of photodegradation under fluorescent light was discussed.

The highly effective reaction system was investigated for the photocatalytic ammonia synthesis from the reduction of nitrate ions by using the semiconductor photocatalyst, Cu and Ag doped on TiO2 (CuAg/TiO2) at room temperature under UV light irradiation (max. 352 nm). In this study, CuAg/TiO2 gave the high efficiency and the selectivity for the ammonia synthesis by the photoreduction of nitrate in the presence of methanol as a hole scavenger. For the evaluation of the photocatalytic activity over CuAg/TiO2, various TiO2 samples, such as standard TiO2, Cu/TiO2, and Ag/TiO2, were evaluated in the same procedure. The chemical properties were investigated by XRD, TEM, XPS, PL, and DRS. We examined the optimum conditions for the experimental factors and the important issues, including the effect of the molar ratio of Cu and Ag onto TiO2, the optimization of the CuAg amount loaded on TiO2, the influence of the loading amount of the catalyst on the reduction of nitrate ions, the exploration of the optimum hole scavenger, and the reusability of the optimum photocatalyst. The very efficient conversion of nitrate ions (95%) and the highest selectivity (86%) were achieved in the reaction with the optimum conditions. Here, we reported the process that nitrate ions can efficiently be reduced, and ammonia can be selectively synthesized over CuAg/TiO2.

Titanium dioxide nanotubes (TNTs) were fabricated via electrochemical anodization process. Photocatalytic hydrogen generation from formic acid solution was investigated using TNTs with simultaneous Rh deposition. The effects of calcination temperature and time for TNTs on hydrogen generation were studied. The maximum hydrogen generation (54 µmol) was observed when using TNTs with a 500 °C calcination temperature and 10 h calcination time under 5 h of black light (352 nm) irradiation. The reusability tests indicated that the TNTs with photodeposited Rh metal (Rh/TNT) had excellent stability up to the fifth cycle for hydrogen generation from formic acid solution. The TNTs were characterized before and after photodeposition of Rh metal via X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), photoluminescence (PL), and diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS). XRD revealed the presence of optimal anatase–rutile phase ratios in TNTs at 500 °C and 300 °C calcination temperatures. XRD and SEM revealed the deposition of Rh metal on the TNT surface at 300 °C and 500 °C calcination temperatures. It was observed that the light absorption ability of TNTs calcined at 500 °C was greater than that of TNTs calcined at 300 °C. The reaction mechanisms for the formation of TNTs and photocatalytic hydrogen production from formic acid solutions by TNTs with simultaneous Rh deposition were also proposed.
