This case study is intended to analyze, through a longitudinal analysis, the radical business model innovation experienced a Cantabrian tourism company that exploits a protected cultural property called “El Capricho de Gaudí.” More specifically, this chapter focuses on the manager attitudes toward risk and their influence on response strategies implemented to redefine and renew this business model for competitiveness and survival. The results of the analysis contribute to generate knowledge about how a solid and well-established small experienced cultural-based tourism enterprise reformulates its business model to survive in time of crisis.

This study aims to explore how family firms pursue strategies that promote strategic flexibility and knowledge-management (KM) practices to respond to strategic-renewal goals. Specifically, based on a knowledge-based view of the firm, the following research question is proposed: Are there heterogeneous groups of family firms in terms of knowledge management, strategic flexibility and strategic renewal goals? To answer this question, an exploratory study using a two-step cluster analysis is developed. It reveals natural groupings from a sample of 288 small and medium-sized Spanish family enterprises (SMEs). The results obtained identified three distinctive clusters of family firms, namely proactive family firms, transitional or adaptive family firms, and rigid family firms. After two-step cluster analysis, we also conducted analysis of variance (ANOVA) to confirm that significant differences amongst the three clusters exist. After heterogeneity been confirmed, a further profile of the cluster solution was provided by using CEO and board characteristics, as well as the generational stage of the company. The findings offer some counterbalance for those studies that tend to study family businesses as a homogeneous entity, thus permitting researchers to access more information, providing rich explanations for renewal managerial decision-making purposes in family firm contexts.

The purpose of this study is twofold: first, to establish the current themes on the topic of manufacturing and supply chain flexibility (MSCF), assess their level of maturity in relation to each other, identify the emerging ones and reflect on how they can inform each other, and second, to develop a conceptual model of MSCF that links different themes connect and highlight future research opportunities. The study builds on a sample of 222 articles published from 1996 to 2018 in international, peer-reviewed journals. The analysis of the sample involves two complementary approaches: the co-word technique to identify the thematic clusters as well as their relative standing and a critical reflection on the papers to explain the intellectual content of these thematic clusters. The results of the co-word analysis show that MSCF is a dynamic topic with a rich and complex structure that comprises five thematic clusters. The value chain, capability and volatility clusters showed research topics that were taking a central role in the discussion on MSCF but were not mature yet. The SC purchasing practices and SC planning clusters involved work that was more focused and could be considered more mature. These clusters were then integrated in a framework that built on the competence–capability perspective and identified the major structural and infrastructural elements of MSCF as well as its antecedents and consequences. This paper proposes an integrative framework helping managers keep track the various decisions they need to make to increase flexibility from the viewpoint of the entire value chain.

This study, by the application of a linear regression by ordinary least squares (OLS), aimed to explore the relationships between knowledge management practices (KMP) and innovation outcomes (product, process, organizational, and commercial), and how they can be moderated by two dimensions of the entrepreneurial orientation (proactiveness and risk taking). This empirical study used survey data from a sample of 288 Spanish family small and medium enterprises (SMEs). The results revealed a positive effect of all the KMPs studied for at least one of the innovation variables studied. Regarding the moderating effect of proactiveness and risk taking on the KMP-innovation outcomes relationship, proactiveness negatively moderated the relationship between knowledge creation and product/process innovation. Moreover, a positive moderating effect was found for the case of knowledge application and process innovation. With regard to risk taking, the evidence found was mixed, and confirmed for some KMPs and all the innovation measures, with the exception of process innovation. The only positive moderating effect found was for knowledge storage and product innovation, whereas, contrary to expected, a negative moderating effect was found for knowledge creation, transfer, and application practices and commercial, product, and organizational innovations, respectively.

Learning Management Systems (LMSs) have a strong effect on the teaching-learning process in higher education. However, specific research on the factors that affect students´ satisfaction and their perceptions of learning outcomes derived from Moodle use is still scarce. Therefore, this study uses the theoretical underpinnings of the Technology Acceptance Model and the Information Systems Success model to contribute to the existing literature in two respects, focusing on the Moodle usage context. First, it analyses the relative impact of pre-acceptance and other e-learning quality-related variables as predictors of students´ satisfaction. Second, it investigates whether communicativeness and students’ satisfaction are both determining factors of students´ perceived learning outcomes. The proposed relationships were tested with a partial least squares (PLS) regression technique, using survey data from 151 undergraduate business students at University of Cantabria (Spain). The findings reveal that information quality is the most relevant predictor of students´ satisfaction, while satisfaction is the most relevant determining factor of perceived learning outcomes. Moreover, the effect of communicativeness on perceived learning outcomes could be very dependent on the educational context, e.g. blended versus virtual learning. These findings can help instructors to implement Moodle efficiently, and suggest the need to develop friendly courses with up-to-date and structured learning materials.

Nowadays, knowledge is considered a critical resource through which organizations can develop sustainable competitive advantages and obtain superior results by allowing to transform themselves and to adapt to their environment. Hence, this research has a double purpose: first, to explore how commitment to learning determines the development of knowledge management practices (mainly, generation, flow, and storage) and how such practices impact small-sized and midsized firms’ strategic renewal and, second, to explore if previous relationships are different for family and nonfamily firms. To test our model, we conducted an empirical study based on a sample of 238 Spanish small- and medium-sized enterprises. Structural equation modeling in the form of partial least squares was used to test the measurement model and hypotheses. In order to assess the moderating effects of organizational context (differences among family and nonfamily firms), we adopted a multi-group approach using two subsamples. Results show that commitment to learning and knowledge management practices are the main undercurrent of strategic renewal. Furthermore, family and nonfamily firms are less heterogeneous than we expected at first sight.

The paper analyses the relatedness or interrelations in the joint adoption of different types of innovation (product, process, organisational, and commercial). We study the relatedness in the adoption of two innovation types and how it could be conditioned by the presence/absence of the remaining innovation types. In order to do this we develop a new methodological approach for testing conditional relatedness. The empirical study uses the Spanish Community Innovation Survey (2008–2014). Our results show that, contrary to the traditional approach that suggests a strong relatedness between product and process innovations, this is the less intense link found. Our empirical approach also allows us to confirm that product innovation emerges as a fundamental axis in the innovation strategy because the more intensively used innovation strategies are those combining product innovation with any other innovation type in absence of the rest and those combining any of the other three innovation types in presence of product innovation. These results provide implications for further research, top management and innovation strategy development.

This chapter is intended to analyze the extent to which businesses in Spain have adopted several flexibility-manufacturing practices. Specifically, this study explores firstly, sample-based differences in the results of comparative family firms versus nonfamily firms concerning practices for implementing manufacturing flexibility. Secondly, heterogeneity in this implementation process within different groups of family firms was explored. The gathered evidence suggests that the main differences with respect to practices for implementing manufacturing flexibility appear when specific characteristics surrounding family firms and related to the role of the CEO and family involvement in the management of the firm are considered.

This work proposes a systematic literature review on manufacturing flexibility that provides a broad map of the main investigated research issues in manufacturing flexibility and future research opportunities on the topic. A sample of 284 academic articles published in peer-reviewed international journals up to 2017 constitutes the knowledge base of the study. This sample is analysed through the combination of two complementary methods: 1) a co-words bibliometric technique to identify the thematic sub-fields as well as their relative standing and 2) a critical reflection based upon an in-depth reading of each of the articles that compose the subfields previously identified with the purpose of interpreting the intellectual structure of the research. This information makes it possible to identify trends and deficiencies in this context, providing well-structured information helping to centralise the efforts required for future work. Based on information from the literature, this paper proposes a theory-based research agenda that summarises different axes of development for future investigations within the field.

The present work is an attempt to contribute to the conceptual systematisation of the manufacturing flexibility types by synthesising the vast literature available after a systematic review. We classified the papers in two perspectives (hierarchical and strategic), and engaged in a systematic process of standardisation of the definitions and names of various flexibility types leading to a better understanding of them. This process allowed us to clearly show: (a) the existence of a broader consensus in the field than expected; (b) that problems are limited to concrete aspects related to the level of analysis or the scope of certain flexibility types; (c) the possibility of a theoretical integration between the two perspectives which would permit a standardisation of the names and definitions for the flexibility types which make up the manufacturing flexibility construct.

This work carries out a comprehensive and systematic review of academic research on entrepreneurship in family firms applying bibliometric indicators. We review the literature published on these topics on the database ISI Web of Knowledge's Social Sciences Citation Index. The results provided show that it is a relatively recent field of study, highly interconnected with high co‐citation between authors, which verifies compliance with Lotka's Law, and where the most productive authors and journals do not necessarily coincide with those most cited. Finally, the co‐word analysis has identified research topics classified into widely developed issues and specialized peripheral issues.
