Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Baumgärtner is head of the Institute of Pathology at the Hannover Veterinary University Foundation (TiHo). His research focuses on neuropathology and neuroimmunology, cell transplantation, the detection and pathogenesis of viral diseases in domestic and wild animals, and the use of substitute and complementary methods in research. He is the editor and co-editor and author or co-author of the three most important German books on veterinary pathology and is active as a reviewer for over 40 specialist magazines. He has also held various leading positions in the European College of Veterinary Pathologists and the European Society of Veterinary Pathology, and is the chairman of the veterinary specialist examinations in Lower Saxony. For this commitment, Baumgärtner has received an honorary doctorate from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Helsinki. The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Helsinki emphasizes his importance in shaping postgraduate training in veterinary pathology in Europe; as President and Vice President of the European College of Veterinary Pathologists, he played a key role in the introduction of the organization's Diplomate program.
