It is difficult to determinate the cause of death from exposure to fatal hypothermia and hyperthermia in forensic casework. Here, we present a state-of-the-art study that employs Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy to investigate the hypothalamus tissues of fatal hypothermic, fatal hyperthermic and normothermic rats to determine forensically significant biomarkers related to fatal hypothermia and hyperthermia. Our results revealed that the spectral variations in the lipid, protein, carbohydrate and nucleic acid components are highly different for hypothalamuses after exposure to fatal hypothermic, fatal hyperthermic and normothermic conditions. In comparison with the normothermia group, the fatal hypothermia and hyperthermia groups contained higher total lipid amounts but were lower in unsaturated lipids. Additionally, their cell membranes were found to have less motional freedom. Among these three groups, the fatal hyperthermia group contained the lowest total proteins and carbohydrates and the highest aggregated and dysfunctional proteins, while the fatal hypothermia group contained the highest level of nucleic acids. In conclusion, this study demonstrates that FTIR spectroscopy has the potential to become a reliable method for the biochemical characterization of fatal hypothermia and hyperthermia hypothalamus tissues, and this could be used as a postmortem diagnostic feature in fatal hypothermia and hyperthermia deaths.

Biometrics recognition takes advantage of feature extraction and pattern recognition to analyze the physical and behavioral characteristics of biological individuals to achieve the purpose of individual identification. As a typical biometric technology, palm print and palm vein have the characteristics of high recognition rate, stable features, easy location and good image quality, which have attracted the attention of researchers. This paper designs and develops a multispectral palm print and palm vein acquisition platform, which can quickly acquire palm spectrum and palm vein multispectral images with seven different wavelengths. We propose a multispectral palm print palmar vein recognition framework, and feature-level image fusion is performed after extracting features of palm print palmar vein images at different wavelengths. Through the multispectral palm print palm vein image fusion experiment, a more feasible multispectral palm print and palm vein image fusion scheme is proposed. Based on the results of image fusion, we further propose an improved convolutional neural network (CNN) for model training to achieve identity recognition based on multispectral palm print palm vein images. Finally, the effects of different CNN network structures and learning rates on the recognition results were analyzed and compared experimentally.

The electroencephalogram (EEG) is a non-invasive technique with high temporal resolution that has become the research frontier of brain-computer interface (BCI) systems. It is widely used in medical rehabilitation, gaming, and other industries. However, decoding EEG signals remains a challenging task. A network called MSCARNet, which combines multi-scale convolution and Riemannian geometry, was proposed for classifying motor imagery based on EEG. The network is supplemented by an attention mechanism and sliding window technique. The MSCARNet utilizes sliding windows to expand data dimensions and multiple convolution kernels to obtain spatial and temporal features. These features are then mapped to Riemannian space and undergo bilinear mapping and logarithmic operations for dimensionality reduction. This approach is beneficial in reducing the impact of noise and outliers and provides convenience for classification. Subject-dependent and subject-independent experiments were conducted using the BCI-IV-2a dataset to validate the effectiveness of the MSCARNet. The results show that the accuracy improved by about 4% compared with existing state-of-the-art methods. The hybrid network based on Riemannian space can effectively improve the accuracy of EEG motor imagery classification tasks without excessive preprocessing.

In recent years, the diabetes population has grown younger. Therefore, it has become a key problem to make a timely and effective prediction of diabetes, especially given a single data source. Meanwhile, there are many data sources of diabetes patients collected around the world, and it is extremely important to integrate these heterogeneous data sources to accurately predict diabetes. For the different data sources used to predict diabetes, the predictors may be different. In other words, some special features exist only in certain data sources, which leads to the problem of missing values. Considering the uncertainty of the missing values within the fused dataset, multiple imputation and a method based on graph representation is used to impute the missing values within the fused dataset. The logistic regression model and stacking strategy are applied for diabetes training and prediction on the fused dataset. It is proved that the idea of combining heterogeneous datasets and imputing the missing values produced in the fusion process can effectively improve the performance of diabetes prediction. In addition, the proposed diabetes prediction method can be further extended to any scenarios where heterogeneous datasets with the same label types and different feature attributes exist.

Myocardial infarction is a type of heart disease marked by rapid progression and high mortality. In this paper, a novel intelligent recognition algorithm of multiple myocardial infarctions using a bidirectional long short-term memory (BiLSTM) neural network classification was proposed. This algorithm was based on morphological feature extraction, which can greatly improve the diagnostic efficiency of doctors for different kinds of myocardial infarction diseases. The algorithm includes noise reduction and beat segmentation of electrocardiogram (ECG) signals from the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) database. According to the medical diagnosis guide, the distance feature of the whole waveform and the amplitude feature of the branch lead waveform are extracted. According to the extracted features, the long short-term memory network (LSTM) and the BiLSTM neural networks are built to classify and recognize heartbeats. The experimental results show that the accuracy of the morphological feature + BiLSTM algorithm in MI detection is 99.4%. At the same time, among the six common myocardial infarction diseases, the location and recognition rate of the culprit vessel is high. The sensitivity, specificity, PPV, NPV, and F1 score parameters all reach more than 98.4%, and the kappa coefficient also reaches 0.983, while the overall accuracy reaches 98.6%. The accuracy of this algorithm is improved by at least 1% compared with that of other existing algorithms. Thus, this study exhibits a very important clinical application value.
