Mechanical rotating components such as bearing and gear are widely used in various industrial occasions. Fault diagnosis of rotating component can guarantee operational reliability and reduce maintenance cost of system. Although many fault diagnosis methods have been developed based on artificial intelligence methods, most of them ignore the existing signal processing knowledge in rotating element fault diagnosis domain. Meanwhile, these methods just assume that working conditions such as load or rotating speed keep constant, which may cause low accuracy once operating condition changes. To address these problems, an enhanced intelligent fault diagnosis method for rotating component is proposed based on multifeature and convolutional neural network (CNN). The vibration signals are first transformed into angular domain by resampling technique. Then, the angular domain signals are converted to obtain corresponding envelope and squared envelope spectrum features, which are fused into red–green–blue color image form to enhance sample features and enlarge differences among various health states. Finally, a CNN is constructed to accomplish fault recognition. Experimental results show that the average diagnosis accuracies of planetary gearbox and rolling element bearing datasets can reach 96.7% and 95.65%, which demonstrate that the multifeature approach is effective in fault diagnosis of rotating components in scenarios with different rotating speeds.

Traditional data-driven intelligent fault diagnosis methods for rotating component commonly assume that sufficient labeled data is available. However, the rotary machine works in a normal state most of the time in practical engineering, resulting in fault diagnosis scenarios with extremely limited and imbalanced data. This phenomenon deteriorates the performance of intelligent fault diagnosis methods. In this article, a data augmentation method based on an improved variational autoencoding generative adversarial network is proposed to address this problem. First, the self-attention mechanism and Wasserstein distance with gradient penalty are introduced to improve data generation capability and training stability of the generative model. Then, the generative models are used to generate synthetic samples with high similarity and diversity based on extremely limited frequency spectrum samples. Subsequently, data filters are established to automatically refine the generated samples. Finally, the refined samples are used to enrich imbalanced dataset and improve the fault diagnosis accuracy. The effectiveness of the proposed method is validated by vibration datasets of two rotating components. Experimental results show that the proposed method can generate high-quality samples and has the potential to enhance the fault diagnosis performance in scenarios with limited data.

The realization of accurate fault diagnosis is crucial to ensure the normal operation of machines. At present, an intelligent fault diagnosis method based on deep learning has been widely applied in mechanical areas due to its strong ability of feature extraction and accurate identification. However, it often depends on enough training samples. Generally, the model performance depends on sufficient training samples. However, the fault data are always insufficient in practical engineering as the mechanical equipment often works under normal conditions, resulting in imbalanced data. Deep learning-based models trained directly with the imbalanced data will greatly reduce the diagnosis accuracy. In this paper, a diagnosis method is proposed to address the imbalanced data problem and enhance the diagnosis accuracy. Firstly, signals from multiple sensors are processed by the wavelet transform to enhance data features, which are then squeezed and fused through pooling and splicing operations. Subsequently, improved adversarial networks are constructed to generate new samples for data augmentation. Finally, an improved residual network is constructed by introducing the convolutional block attention module for enhancing the diagnosis performance. The experiments containing two different types of bearing datasets are adopted to validate the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed method in single-class and multi-class data imbalance cases. The results show that the proposed method can generate high-quality synthetic samples and improve the diagnosis accuracy presenting great potential in imbalanced fault diagnosis.

A reliability analysis of the milling system with uncertainties is developed in this paper to predict reliable chatter-free machining parameters. The chatter reliability refers to the probability of no chatter for the dynamic milling system. Then a reliability model is established to predict the chatter vibration, in which the dominant modal parameters of the dynamic milling system are defined as random variables. To solve the reliable model with the second-order fourth-moment (SOFM) method, the limiting axial cutting depth is substituted by an explicit expression obtained using a neural network. Therefore, after distributions of the random parameters are experimentally determined, the reliability of the given machining parameters can be computed with the SOFM method. Furthermore, a reliable stability lobe diagram (RSLD) can be plotted to obtain more reliable and accurate stable region instead of the conventional SLD. A case study is performed to validate the feasibility of the proposed method. The reliability of the milling system was calculated with the SOFM method, the first-order second-moment (FOSM) method and the Monte Carlo simulation (MCS) method. The results from the SOFM method and MCS method were found to be more consistent. Moreover, a RSLD with the reliability level 0.99 was compared with a conventional SLD plotted using the mean values of the random parameters. Chatter tests shown that the RSLD with the higher reliability level was more accurate for predicting the chatter-free machining parameters.

Accurately predicting the remaining useful life (RUL) is crucial for ensuring the safety and reliability of aircraft engine operation. However, aircraft engines operate in harsh conditions, with the characteristics of high speed, high temperature, and high load, resulting in high-dimensional and noisy data. This makes feature extraction inadequate, leading to low accuracy in the prediction of the RUL of aircraft engines. To address this issue, Transformer-TCN-Self-attention network (TTSNet) with feature fusion, as a parallel three-branch network, is proposed for predicting the RUL of aircraft engines. The model first applies exponential smoothing to smooth the data and suppress noise to the original signal, followed by normalization. Then, it uses a parallel transformer encoder, temporal convolutional network (TCN), and multi-head attention three-branch network to capture both global and local features of the time series. The model further completes feature dimension weight allocation and fusion through a multi-head self-attention mechanism, emphasizing the contribution of different features to the model. Subsequently, it fuses the three parts of features through a linear layer and concatenation. Finally, a fully connected layer is used to establish the mapping relationship between the feature matrix and the RUL label, obtaining the RUL prediction value. The model was validated on the C-MAPSS aircraft engine dataset. Experimental results show that compared to other related RUL models, the RMSE and Score reached 11.02 and 194.6 on dataset FD001, respectively; on dataset FD002, the RMSE and Score reached 13.25 and 874.1, respectively. On dataset FD003, the RMSE and Score reached 11.06 and 200.1 and on dataset FD004, the RMSE and Score reached 18.26 and 1968.5, respectively, demonstrating better performance of RUL prediction.
