Metasurfaces draw everyone’s attention because they can precisely control the phase, amplitude and polarization of emergent light to achieve light field control in recent years. As one of the most practicable devices among the many applications of metasurface, metalens can extremely reduce the size as well as complexity of optical systems and realizes the higher optical quality compared with conventional lens. So it will be very potential to use metalens in integration systems to reaching higher integration and efficiency. In addition, dynamic control is always desirable in optical systems. In this work, we firstly design a near-infrared tunable metalens treating phase change materials as the meta-atoms which makes the tunable metalens become more compact. At designed wavelength of 1.55 μm, the focusing efficiency of our amorphous metalens is more than 16 times of the efficiency when it works at crystalline state, and its focal length can stay almost unchanged when the GST state is switched. The broadband performance of the metalens is also confirmed. This work may bring some good opportunities for the revolution of the next generation tunable integrated optics.

Metalenses recently have attracted attention because of their more compact size in comparison with conventional lenses; they can also achieve better optical performance with higher resolution. Duplexer is an interesting function of a metalens that can distinguish different sources and divide them into two parts for specific purposes. In this article, we design tunable duplex metalenses with phase-change material Ge2Sb2Te5 for the first time. Two types of special unit cells are designed to modulate the incident lights, and four metalenses are designed based on the two types of unit cells. Specific phase profiles are calculated for different sections of metalens in which the corresponding unit cells are settled; accordingly, the metalenses can focus the incident lights at any positions according to our design. Moreover, the metalenses become selectable via tuning the state of phase-change material, which means that the output light field can be actively controlled. The proposal of our tunable duplex metalenses will offer new opportunities for active three-dimensional imaging or optical coding.

Recently, the metalens has been investigated for its application in many fields due to its advantages of being much smaller than a conventional lens and is compatible with nano-devices. Although metalenses have extraordinary optical performance, it is still not enough in some occasions such as wavefront detection for adaptive optics and display for large area applications. Using a metalens array is an ideal solution to solve these problems. Unfortunately, the common metalens array cannot be adjusted once it is fabricated, which limits its range of application. In this article, we designed an actively tunable metalens array for the first time by arranging the patterned phase change material Ge2Sb2Te5 (GST) appropriately. For the metalens array designed at the wavelength of 4.6 μm, it had excellent broadband performance in the range from 4.5 μm to 5.2 μm. On the other hand, by tuning the phase state of GST, the focus and display of the metalens array can be controlled, acting as switching on or off. Furthermore, any graphics constructed with patterned focal spots can be achieved when the metalens array has sufficient secondary unit cells. The proposed metalens may have potential application value in the adaptive optics and dynamic display field.

For a high-power slab solid-state laser, obtaining high output power and high output beam quality are the most important indicators. Adaptive optics systems can significantly improve beam qualities by compensating for the phase distortions of the laser beams. In this paper, we developed an improved algorithm called Adaptive Gradient Estimation Stochastic Parallel Gradient Descent (AGESPGD) algorithm for beam cleanup of a solid-state laser. A second-order gradient of the search point was introduced to modify the gradient estimation, and it was introduced with the adaptive gain coefficient method into the classical Stochastic Parallel Gradient Descent (SPGD) algorithm. The improved algorithm accelerates the search for convergence and prevents it from falling into a local extremum. Simulation and experimental results show that this method reduces the number of iterations by 40%, and the algorithm stability is also improved compared with the original SPGD method.

Diffractive telescopes are one of the most promising solutions to build lightweight space telescopes with a diameter over 10 m. However, the performance of the imaging systems is inevitably degraded by the high-order diffractive light from the diffractive system. To address this problem, in this paper we mathematically deduce the imaging model, including multiple-order diffraction, by the scalar diffraction theory. After the imaging characteristics analysis, an adaptive Wiener filtering algorithm based on the principal component analysis method is proposed. The broadband imaging and deconvolution experiments are performed by the 80 mm diffractive optical telescope systems. Results demonstrate that this method increases the average gradient by at least 8.2 times and improves imaging quality and contrast. It could be a useful exploration for high-performance imaging of large-aperture and lightweight telescopes.

In adaptive optics (AO), multiple different incident wavefronts correspond to a same far-field intensity distribution, which leads to a many-to-one mapping. To solve this problem, a single far-field deep learning adaptive optics system based on four-quadrant discrete phase modulation (FQDPM) is proposed. Our method performs FQDPM on an incident wavefront to overcome this many-to-one mapping, then convolutional neural network (CNN) is used to directly predict the wavefront. Numerical simulations indicate that the proposed method can achieve precise high-speed wavefront correction with a single far-field intensity distribution: it takes nearly 0.6ms to complete wavefront correction while the mean root mean square (RMS) of residual wavefronts is 6.3% of that of incident wavefronts, and the Strehl ratio of the far-field intensity distribution increases by 5.7 times after correction. In addition, the experiment results show that mean RMS of residual wavefronts is 6.5% of that of incident wavefronts and it takes nearly 0.5 ms to finish wavefront reconstruction, which verifies the correctness of our proposed method.
