For sustainable building design, performance-based optimization incorporating parametric modelling and evolutionary optimization can allow architects to leverage building massing design to improve energy performance. However, two key challenges make such applications of performance-based optimization difficult in practice. First, due to the parametric modelling approaches, the topological variability in the building massing variants is often very limited. This, in turn, limits the scope for the optimization process to discover high-performing solutions. Second, for architects, the process of creating parametric models capable of generating the necessary topological variability is complex and time-consuming, thereby significantly disrupting the design processes. To address these two challenges, this paper presents a parametric massing algorithm based on the subtractive form generation principle. The algorithm can generate diverse building massings with significant topological variability by removing different parts from a predefined volume. Additionally, the algorithm can be applied to different building massing design scenarios without additional parametric modelling being required. Hence, using the algorithm can help architects achieve an explorative performance-based optimization for building massing design while streamlining the overall design process. Two case studies of daylighting performance optimizations are presented, which demonstrate that the algorithm can enhance the exploration of the potential in building massing design for energy performance improvements.

For the urban built environment, the shape characteristics of the external space are of decisive significance. However, what is commonly referred to as open space is more of a definition of social attributes. Therefore, in the research on urban environments, especially in urban microclimate, the study of a microclimate’s correlation with open space easily produces deviations. The identification of the openness of an external space based on a direct quantitative description is an important prerequisite for the cognitive urban form. In this study, based on the height-to-width ratio (HWR) of different directional sections of external space, areas with high openness in an urban space are extracted by the threshold value. In the case analysis of different areas in Nanjing, China, the results showed that the method is effective and convenient. The results of the analysis can also be used more widely in the urban design and research.

Urban public space is the main place for human outdoor activities. Simulating human behavior through the Multi-Agent System (MAS) is one of the most important methods for studying public space. However, most of the research on this topic is concerned with the way people behave and the connection to spatial layouts. It ignores the fact that in outdoor spaces, microclimate factors tend to have a more important impact on human behavior. In this study, microclimate factors were narrowed down into two main factors: outdoor thermal perception and sunshine perception. Both of these factors are integrated into the traditional MAS, together with visual perception as the influence factors of agent action. The new MAS was developed in Processing language and can dynamically and visually show agents activities in the space. Taking Gulou Square in Nanjing, China, as a case, the simulations were carried out with three typical meteorological days of spring equinox, summer solstice, and winter solstice. Through comparing the simulation results at different times, we found that the new MAS exhibits a significant impact of microclimate on human behavior. The new MAS can be used reasonably and effectively for the design and evaluation of urban public space.
