The calculation method presented in ISO 13790 was developed during the research project PASSYS. It aimed to work out the way of estimating energy demand while taking into account different passive solar systems. The standard includes two calculation methods for sunspaces – a full and simplified method. They differ in terms of basic assumptions and the treatment of solar gains in the sunspace and conditioned rooms. There are some doubts about the interpretation of equations presented in the standard, especially when it comes to modelling the solar radiation distribution within the solar space. The paper presents a discussion on the basic hypotheses applied in full and simplified methods, together with the author’s suggestions regarding modifications to the ISO 13790 calculation methods. The modified methods allowed to satisfactorily predict the functioning of the exemplary sunspaces with a smaller area of glazed partitions and higher radiation absorptivity of the casing, that is spaces similar in terms of solar radiation utilisation to traditional living spaces. The phenomena typical for sunspaces with a high degree of glazing, such as the retransmission of reflected radiation, were not sufficiently taken into account in the calculation methods of the standard.

Greenhouse systems in the form of glazed balconies may be accomplished both in the newly designed buildings and in the existing ones, raising their energy standard in a quick and inexpensive way. However, basic parameters influencing the efficiency of the systems are often chosen intuitively, not allowing to fully benefit from the sunspaces or causing overheating of the rooms and discomfort for the users. These issues are common drawbacks of passive systems and may become especially important in the aspect of anthropogenic climate changes, including temperature rise and summer heatwaves. The paper presents results of a long-term summer temperature monitoring in flats with glazed balconies of different construction. They were located in prefabricated multi-family buildings, in residential districts of Lublin and Zamość. The cities are situated in the south-eastern part of Poland, belonging to the warm-summer humid continental climate area. The monitoring enabled overheating assessment according to the concept of adaptive comfort and connecting it with the sunspace construction and the inhabitants’ behaviour. These issues are new aspects in the research area, and the work is a part of extensive studies including monitoring and dynamic simulations of dwellings with passive greenhouse systems in Poland. Practical application: Glazed balconies raise the energy standard of buildings in a quick and inexpensive way, but it is important to consider their function not only during the heating season but also in the summer. Recording of temperatures enabled the monitoring of thermal conditions in the flats and the overheating assessment. It is possible to keep the internal temperature in the rooms within the desired range thanks to the sunspace ventilation and occupants’ behaviour.

Raw clay is used nowadays in construction as a component of mortars and plasters and as a binder in composites based on straw or shives. It is a material with good sorption properties and vapor permeability, but it is susceptible to shrinkage, is not resistant to water, and also is characterized by low mechanical strength, which makes it impossible to be used, for example, in external plasters. Various additives and admixtures are used to improve selected properties of clay mortars. The article presents the research results and assessment of the effect of glauconite clay mortar modification with an admixture of linseed oil varnish on selected properties. Admixtures in the amounts of 1%, 2%, and 3% in relation to clay weight were used. Flexural and compressive strength, water resistance, shrinkage, drying capacity, density, and porosity of mortar, were tested. The admixture of linseed oil varnish in the amounts used in the investigation had a positive effect on some of the tested properties; regardless of the quantity of the admixture, the modified mortars had better parameters concerning flexural strength, shrinkage reduction, and water resistance than the reference mortar, without admixture.

Glazed buffer spaces have an important influence on the energy performance of buildings, especially in the case of dwellings located in multi-family buildings. The ability to utilize solar radiation during the heating season can be assessed with the use of the temperature reduction factor, expressing the relative temperature rise in the solar space above the outside air temperature. The paper is based on the results of the internal temperature monitoring in dwellings with glazed balconies of different envelope construction and airtightness. The dwellings were located in buildings in Lublin and Zamość, cities in the eastern part of Poland. The measurements took place from July 2017 until September 2018, and the temperature was recorded with the use of iButton sensors. The measurement results were supplemented with the weather data coming from the database of the Polish Institute of Meteorology and Water Management. Thanks to the collected data it was possible to calculate the temperature reduction factor during the subsequent months of the heating season, and to check its relationship with the factors such as the balconies’ orientation, envelope construction and airtightness or the glazing type. The analyses also included the calculation of heat losses reduction achieved thanks to the solar spaces.

This article analyses the connection of the two types of floors on the ground (floors on joists and self-supporting floors), with the external wall made of a hemp-lime composite for the occurrence of thermal bridges. Several factors that may affect the heat transfer in the junction were taken into account: the level of the floor on the ground, the wall thickness, the thermal conductivity of the composite, and the location of the timber frame construction. The technology of using hemp and lime is relatively new, and there is a lack of such analyses in the literature. The two-dimensional (2D) heat-transfer in the described construction joints was analyzed based on the finite-element method with the use of the THERM 7.4 software. The results were presented as averaged and linear thermal transmittance coefficients dependent on the above mentioned factors. The possibility of surface condensation was also checked. The differences in the values of the thermal transmittance of the junction between the two variants of ground floors reached around 0.13%-1.67% and the values of linear thermal transmittance factor reached approximately 2.43%-10.13%. The junctions with the highest floor level showed a decrease in the thermal transmittance value by about 3.00%-5.77% and in the linear thermal transmittance, by about 21.98%-53.83%, compared to the junctions with the lowest floor level. Calculations showed that almost all analyzed junctions are free from surface condensation causing mould growth, because the minimum temperature factors f0.25 were higher than 0.78 (except for junctions with the lowered floor levels). The junction with a floor on the timber joists showed better thermal parameters than the junction with a self-supporting floor in each of the analyzed variants. By increasing the level of floor insulation, it is possible to limit the thermal bridges and improve the thermal properties of the junction.

Thermal bridges increase heat losses in buildings and reduce the temperature of the internal envelope surface, causing moisture condensation and mould growth. This is an important issue for building materials based on organic components such as a hemp-lime composite, as they are particularly susceptible to biological degradation. The hemp-lime composite is used as a filling in timber frame construction. The increased cross-section of wooden elements together with the geometry change in the construction joints can form thermal bridges. The paper presents numerical analyses of temperature distribution in the area of construction elements connections, taking into account several variants of junctions: external walls, corners, and window placement in a wall. The thermal parameters of hemp-lime composites used in the analyses were obtained from the authors’ own research.Despite relatively good insulating properties, timber elements have a noticeable influence on the local increase of the heat transfer in hemp-lime composite structures, forming thermal bridges in the partitions themselves and in the construction nodes. However, the linear thermal transmittance coefficients in the presented joints were not very significant (in the range of 0.026 ÷ 0.092 W/(m·K) depending on the type of connection), proving the usefulness of this type of construction in energy-efficient buildings.

EN ISO 15265 is a standard describing validation procedures concerning dynamic simulation programs for evaluation of energy demand in buildings. The validation procedure comprises 12 tests altogether: 4 introductory ones and 8 proper validation tests differing with the assumptions concerning the partition construction, the thermal mass, window shading, external gains and functioning of the installation systems. Some procedures, for instance the calculation of solar radiation incident on the vertical planes, are not clearly described in the standard. The paper presents the discussion of possible interpretations of the procedures included in the standard and the results of validation of a simulation program based on the control volume method.

The overheating risk in flats (apartments) retrofitted to energy-efficient standards has been identified by previous studies as one that is particularly high. With climate change and rising mean temperatures this is a growing concern. There is a need to understand the kinds of practices, learning and interventions adopted by the occupants of individual homes to try to reduce overheating, as this area is poorly understood and under-researched. This case study focuses on the impact of different home-use practices in relation to the severity of overheating in 18 flats in one tower block in northern England. Internal temperatures monitored in comparable flats show that the percentage of time spent above the expected category II threshold of thermal comfort according to BS EN 15251 can differ by over 70%. Extensive monitoring, covering a full year, including two summer periods, has identified emergent changes in heatwave practices linked with increased home-use skills and understanding among the research participants. Close analysis of design intentions versus reality has identified key physical barriers and social learning opportunities for appropriate adaptation in relation to heatwaves. Recommendations for designers and policy-makers are highlighted in relation to these factors.

The paper discusses the possibilities of using passive greenhouse systems, such as glazed balconies, in an example residential building. The analyses were carried out for five localities in Poland, different in terms of external air temperature and insolation. Typical meteorological years were used as the source of climatic data needed in calculations. Two types of balcony’s casing were evaluated, with high and low thermal insulating properties. Demand for heating and cooling in a flat was determined with the use of dynamic computer simulations, and the outcomes were compared with the energy performance of a flat with an open balcony. Additionally, the number of hours with the internal operative temperature exceeding 26℃ was taken as a measure of overheating the apartment when natural airing by opening windows was included in simulations. The calculations showed diversification in the effectiveness of greenhouse systems resulting from climatic conditions, and allowed areas which are the most suitable for the passive use of solar radiation to be identified. Practical application: Analyses present energy savings in a typical dwelling achieved thanks to glazed balconies, and allow to choose the most efficient type of balcony’s envelope taking into account the heating and cooling demand, and the risk of overheating. The results are diversified in respect of building’s location, showing the areas of Poland where the passive use of solar energy would be most beneficial. The calculations may become the basis for further economical evaluation of greenhouse systems effectiveness.

Typical Meteorological Years (TMY) were prepared in Poland due to the introduction of obligatory energy certification for buildings. They are based on source data collected by the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management from 1971 to 2000. Predictions indicate that until the end of the 21st century, the air temperature will increase. Therefore, the characteristics obtained with the use of TMY may differ from the energy demand of buildings used nowadays. This article compares energy demand calculated with the use of TMY and subsequent climatic data from 2001 to 2012, for three different locations in Poland. The analyses were performed with the use of the dynamic simulation computer program, for typical living quarters in a multifamily residential building with different construction and window orientation. Results obtained with the use of TMY and subsequent climatic data show that the typical years can be used for the evaluation of heating demand. However, cooling demand calculated with the use of TMY was significantly lower in comparison with the mean cooling demand for the years 2001–2012. This may distort the energy needs and indoor environment conditions in summer, and cause discomfort or unnecessary energy use in presently occupied dwellings.

A typical meteorological year (TMY) for Poland was developed in 2004, on the basis of climatic data collected from 1971 to 2000. Due to the observed tendency of global warming, the buildings’ energy performance obtained with the use of TMY may differ from the actual heating and cooling demand. This research compares energy demand calculated using TMY and climatic data collected from 2001 to 2012. Calculations were made by means of a simulation computer program, designed for dynamic analyses of buildings and installation systems. The analyses concerned typical living quarters in a multifamily residential building located in Warsaw. According to the results, TMY is useful for estimating the heating demand of existing buildings. Cooling demand calculated with the use of TMY was, however, up to 37% lower in comparison with the mean cooling demand for subsequent years. This may distort the energy needs and indoor environment conditions in summer, and create discomfort while using existing and new buildings. Practical application: The paper presents comparison between energy demand calculated with the use of typical meteorological year (TMY) based on the climatic data from the period of 1971 to 2000, and real climatic data from subsequent 12 years, 2001–2012. There is substantial difference in the results presenting cooling demand in buildings evaluated with the use of both datasets. Unless national energy certification procedures are updated, this may cause serious faults in building design, due to incorrect assessment of internal conditions in new and existing buildings, and higher than expected energy use in summer.
