Biography

Michael Belsley is an Associate Professor with Habilitation at the Physics Department, (UM) working on ultrafast nonlinear laser spectroscopy and optical metrology. He has contributed to several areas from the far-wing spectroscopy of atomic collisions during his PhD (USA, 1986) and generalizing it to nonlinear optical probes of atomic collisions and characterization of non-classical states of light. In 1992 he established his research group at UM. He has characterized non-linear optical materials and textiles using coherent optical techniques, explored ultra-cold atomic gases and studied the propagation of light in random scattering media. He built up an ultrafast spectroscopy laboratory capable of performing polarization-resolved second harmonic measurements, fluorescence lifetime imaging, transient absorption and cross-phase modulation experiments. He has supervised or co-supervised 13 MSc theses, 10 PhD dissertations, 8 post-doctoral fellows and has been the principal investigator of 9 funded projects.
