The aim of the study was to investigate the serum pro-inflammatory cytokine profile in patients with diagnosed endometriosis. Material and methods: The study included 160 women, who were divided in two study groups (Group I – endometriosis; Group 2 – healthy). We evaluated the serum levels of interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-5, IL-6, IL-7, and IL-12, and of tumour necrosis factor α (TNF-α) with the use of Human Multiplex Cytokine Panels. Results: The serum level of IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α is significantly higher in women with endometriosis compared to women free of disease, from the control group (mean 10.777, 183.027, and 131.326, respectively, compared to 3.039, 70.043, and 75.285, respectively; p = 0.002, p < 0.001, and p = 0.015, respectively). No significant differences in the serum levels of IL-5 and IL-12 were observed between the studied groups, and IL-7 had a very low detection rate. Conclusions: Women with endometriosis have elevated levels of key pro-inflammatory cytokines, i.e. IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α. At the same time, IL-1β and IL-6 could be used as predictors for endometriosis.

The aim of the study was to determine menopause-related changes in serum levels of main proinflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokines. Material and methods: The study included 175 women, who were divided into 5 study groups (group 1 – fertile women; group 2 – pre- and perimenopausal...

To evaluate the systemic inflammatory response in preeclampsia compared to normal pregnancy. The following serum parameters were determined in three groups of patients: leukocytes, neutrophils, tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin-6 (IL-6), C-reactive protein (CRP), and certain markers of oxidative stress. Fetal status was assessed based on the gestational age at which birth occurred, on the Apgar score, and on fetal weight. In preeclampsia, a higher systemic inflammatory status was found compared to normal pregnancy. Gestational age at birth, fetal weight, and Apgar score were significantly lower in the group with preeclampsia compared to normal pregnancy. In preeclampsia, there is an increased systemic inflammatory response compared to normal pregnancy, which can influence fetal status at birth.

Background: Endometriosis is a frequent gynecologic disease with a severe impact on the quality of life in the affected women; its pathogenesis is yet to be fully understood, with an altered immunity as a possible key factor. The present study aimed to investigate the serum anti-inflammatory cytokine profile in the patients with endometriosis compared with the healthy controls. Materials and Methods: One hundred and sixty women were included, divided into two study groups (Group I - endometriosis; Group 2 - healthy women). We evaluated the serum levels of interleukin-1 receptor antagonist (IL-1Ra), IL-2, IL-2R, IL-4, IL-10, IL-13, and IL-15 with the use of Human multiplex cytokine panels. Statistical analyses (normality distribution analysis, independent t-test, Mann-Whitney U-test) were performed using IBM SPSS software (version 22.0) and GraphPad Prism (version 5.00); receiver operating characteristic curve were used to demonstrate the diagnostic performance of the studied markers. Results: The mean serum level of IL-1Ra, IL-4, and IL-10 were significantly higher in women with endometriosis compared to women free of disease from the control group (30.155, 138.459, and 1.489, respectively, compared to 14.109, 84.710, and 0.688, respectively; P < 0.001, P < 0.001, and P = 0.002, respectively.). No significant differences in the mean serum levels of IL-2, IL-13, and IL-15 were observed between the studied groups and IL-2R had a very low detection rate. Conclusion: Endometriosis is associated with elevated levels of anti-inflammatory cytokines, IL-1Ra, IL-4, and IL-10, markers that have a potential role as a prognostic factor for endometriosis.

Aims: To revise the current literature about the usefulness of elastography in cervical cancer (CC) and cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN), from methods and technical limitations, to diagnosis, staging and the ability of predicting the response to oncologic treatment. Methods: An electronic database search was performed (PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science) with the data range from January 2000 until May 2020. All studies, fully-available in English, assessing elastography of the uterine cervix in CC and CIN were selected. Studies were reviewed and discussed according to the elastographic technique and to the purpose of the research. Results: Twenty-three articles were found: 11 articles regarding strain elastography, 4 articles assessing shear wave elastography and 8 papers with matter-related information. Elastography was used in the study of normal variants of the uterine cervix as well as: the positive diagnosis of CC and CIN, clinical staging and the prediction of therapeutic response in CC. Comparison of the elastographic techniques was also performed. Conclusions: Elastography has multiple applications in the gynecological pathology of the cervix. The methods used to assess the cervix are diverse, and none have become universally accepted. With regard to CC and CIN, elastography is still an ongoing research field.

The ultrasonographic (US) features of endometriomas and hemorrhagic ovarian cysts (HOCs) are often overlapping. With the emergence of new computer-aided diagnosis techniques, this is the first study to investigate whether texture analysis (TA) could improve the discrimination between the two lesions in comparison with classic US evaluation. Fifty-six ovarian cysts (endometriomas, 30; HOCs, 26) were retrospectively included. Four classic US features of endometriomas (low-level internal echoes, perceptible walls, no solid components, and less than five locules) and 275 texture parameters were assessed for every lesion, and the ability to identify endometriomas was evaluated through univariate, multivariate, and receiver operating characteristics analyses. The sensitivity (Se) and specificity (Sp) were calculated with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). The texture model, consisting of seven independent predictors (five variations of difference of variance, image contrast, and the 10th percentile; 100% Se and 100% Sp), was able to outperform the ultrasound model composed of three independent features (low-level internal echoes, perceptible walls, and less than five locules; 74.19% Se and 84.62% Sp) in the diagnosis of endometriomas. The TA showed statistically significant differences between the groups and high diagnostic value, but it remains unclear if the textures reflect the intrinsic histological characteristics of the two lesions.
