Assuming the distance between two nodal points of a specific cable vibration mode as the effective length of a pinned–pinned cable, mode shape–aided cable tension estimation methods are employed to estimate the cable force. This article proposes a framework based on digital image correlation technique for remote measurement of the dynamic displacement time history of cables in cable structures. Frequency domain decomposition technique is then used to extract the cable natural frequencies and mode shapes. Identified cable mode shapes are used along with a tensioned pinned–pinned cable model to estimate the cable force. Accuracy of the proposed methodology is investigated using the experimental data coming from a laboratory-scale test setup and hanger cables of a real-world arch bridge.

In order to improve the performance of wet joints in prefabricated ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) bridges, a comparative study was conducted to investigate the flexural behaviour of UHPC joint beams. Experimental tests were implemented on a complete beam and on five further specimens with, respectively, vertical joint, rhombus joint, vertical joint with strips, tied rhombus joint with strips, and welded rhombus joint with strips. The specimens’ failure modes, ultimate flexural capacities, strain distributions and load–deflection curves were investigated. The test results show that the flexural capacity of the joint beams is lower than that of the complete beam. Among the five specimens with wet joints, the welded rhombus joint with top and bottom strips had the greatest stiffness, the highest cracking resistance capacity, and the best flexural performance. From the best to the worst performing, the remainder of the wet joint specimens took the following order: the unwelded rhombus joint with strips, the vertical joint with strips, the rhombus joint and the vertical joint. In accordance with the test results and the related theoretical analysis, this paper proposes formulas to calculate the flexural capacity of the beam with UHPC joints.

Joints are always the focus of the precast structure for accelerated bridge construction. In this paper, a girder-to-girder joint suitable for steel-ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) lightweight composite bridge (LWCB) is proposed. Two flexural tests were conducted to verify the effectiveness of the proposed T-shaped girder-to-girder joint. The test results indicated that: (1) The T-shaped joint has a better cracking resistance than the traditional I-shaped joint; (2) The weak interfaces of the T-shaped joint are set in the areas with relatively lower negative bending moment, and thus the cracking risk could be decreased drastically; (3) The natural curing scheme for the joint is feasible, and the reinforcement has a very large inhibitory effect on the UHPC material shrinkage; The joint interface is the weak region of the LWCB, which requires careful consideration in future designs. Based on the experimental test results, the design and calculation methods for the deflection, crack width, and ultimate flexural capacity in the negative moment region of LWCB were presented.

Recently, the ‘drive-by’ or vehicle scanning technique has attracted increasing attention over the last decade for the purpose of bridge health monitoring. The feasibility of this technique has been demonstrated by many field tests. In comparison to conventional bridge SHM, the concept of the drive-by bridge technique shows many advantages in terms of efficiency, economy, convenience, and mobility. It has been verified that wavelet transforms can successfully identify bridge damage and its location using the responses of a moving vehicle. However, the validity of this method is challenged by road roughness. This paper proposes a wavelet-based approach to detect bridge defects using wavelet energy. In addition, a damage index based on component wavelet energy is developed to localize the damage. A numerical simulation is modeled to verify the feasibility of the proposed approach, and the result shows that the proposed approach performs well even when considering road roughness in the vehicle and bridge interaction. Moreover, the effects of road surface profile, vehicle velocity, vehicle mass, noise signal, and different damage severity on the proposed approach are investigated. The proposed approach shows a great potential application in bridge health monitoring using indirect measurements from a moving vehicle.

A lightweight composite bridge deck system composed of steel orthotropic deck stiffened with thin Ultra-High Performance Concrete (UHPC) layer has been proposed to eliminate fatigue cracks in orthotropic steel decks. The debonding between steel deck and UHPC layer may be introduced during construction and operation phases, which could cause adverse consequences, such as crack-induced water invasion and distinct reduction of the shear resistance. The piezoelectric lead zirconate titanate (PZT)-based technologies are used to detect interfacial debonding defects between the steel deck and the UHPC layer. Both impedance analysis and wave propagation method are employed to extract debonding features of the steel-UHPC composite slab with debonding defect in different sizes and thicknesses. Experimental tests are performed on two steel-UHPC composite slabs and a conventional steel-concrete composite deck. Additionally, an improved Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO)-k-means clustering algorithm is adopted to obtain debonding patterns based on the feature data set. The laboratory tests demonstrate that the proposed approach provides an effective way to detect interfacial debonding of steel-UHPC composite deck.
