The aim of the current study was to assess the components of the intervention program “Aquatic”, targeted at the reduction of bottled water use in adolescence. The Comprehensive Action Determination Model was chosen as a theory of change for the development and evaluation of pro-environmental behavior intervention. We examined the impact of five experimental intervention factors (water bottles, promo video, prompts, goal setting, and feedback) on eight intervention program outcomes: Perceived behavioral control, Social norm, Habit, Awareness of need, Awareness of consequence, Personal norm, Intention, and Behavior. The study sample consisted of 419 adolescents (52.8% girls, Mage = 15.21, SDage = 0.64) from Lithuania. A factorial experimental study design was used, and a Latent change modeling approach was applied for the evaluation of individual and combined effects of intervention components. Promo video, Prompts, and Goalsetting had a positive effect on Awareness of consequence, Social norm, and Awareness of need, respectively. Receiving a Waterbottle in combination with Promovideo had a positive effect on Perceived behavioral control and in combination with Prompts as well as Goals—on Awareness of need. Waterbottles, Promo-video, Prompts, and Goals, but not Feedback, had value in the promotion of targeted pro-environmental outcomes.

We compared the extent to which a potentially groundwater-contaminating ecological disaster affected adolescents’ bottled water consumption and perceived risk to use tap water. The affected group consists of 221 adolescents (56.6% were girls, Mage = 15.44, SDage = 0.60), while the control group consisted of 156 adolescents (56.4% were girls, Mage = 15.50, SDage = 0.55). The Comprehensive Action Determination Model that explains pro-environmental actions was used as a basis for the comparison of adolescents’ bottled water use, both on mean and model-path levels. Perceived risk of tap water use was compared among affected and control groups (i.e., quasi-experimental manipulation check). The affected group perceived tap water use as riskier than the control group, although the difference was marginal. The affected group also demonstrated significantly lower intention not to consume bottled water than the control. Interestingly, however, path-level comparisons indicated that affected adolescents were more effective in translating their perceived control over sources of clean drinking water into intention to consume tap water.

The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between psychological hardiness, basic psychological need (BPN) satisfaction (Self-Determination theory, Deci & Ryan, 2000), soldiers’ engagement, and general self-reported health. We hypothesized that the effect of psychological hardiness on soldiers’ engagement and general health is mediated by the satisfaction of basic psychological needs (autonomy, competence, and relatedness). Data from a questionnaire survey was collected among soldiers of the Lithuanian Armed forces (N = 506) using The Hardiness – Resilience Gauge (HRG), Basic Need Satisfaction at Work Scale, Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES – 9) and General Health Questionnaire (GHQ – 12). Structural equation modelling was used to evaluate the hypothesis of a mediating role of BPN satisfaction within the relationship between hardiness and soldier’s engagement and general health. The results showed mediating effects of satisfaction of BPN on psychological hardiness and health, and engagement relationship, thus providing support for our hypothesis. Implications of the results are discussed.

The present study investigates and provides support for the Savanna-IQ interaction hypothesis regarding pro-environmental values. Study 1 showed that the highest attained education level is a significant predictor of pro-environmental concern, while Study 2 showed that the trait of openness to experience plays a unique role in predicting biospheric values, but not other values, lending support for the Savanna-IQ interaction hypothesis. Acting to preserve the natural environment is an evolutionarily novel challenge, and therefore, is more actively addressed by individuals who more readily adopt novel ideas and seek out new ways of behaving.

We explored to what extent two theoretical approaches – general (i.e., the Value-Identity-Personal norm model), and behavior-specific (i.e., the Comprehensive Action Determination Model) can explain different waste prevention behaviors. In Study 1 we investigated bottled water consumption, while in Study 2 we investigated bag reuse when shopping, giving away or selling unused items, and purchasing unpackaged goods. The results of Study 1 (349 adolescents from 13 to 18 years of age (54.7% were female), convenience sample) and Study 2 (508 adolescents from 13 to 17 years of age (49% were female), nationally representative random sample) indicated that both approaches predict behaviors substantially well. Among other factors, biospheric values, environmental self-identity, social norm, personal norm, and habit were found to be the most prominent contributors for their models. Both general and behavior-specific approaches have value in informing policies for lowering adolescents’ waste generation and potentially could be used in tandem.

Policy awareness increases the likelihood of policy-congruent behavior. Yet individuals may differ in the extent to which they notice certain policies; thus, psychological factors that explain behavior can have a differing effect on policy-congruent behavior of individuals. We investigated to what extent the relationship between normative, habitual, intentional, and situational factors that explain bottled water purchasing behavior vary regarding individuals’ awareness of policy targeted at reducing bottled water purchasing. We investigated this question in a representative sample of Lithuanian adolescents. Our study indicated that awareness of policy targeted at bottled water purchasing acts as a moderator for adolescents’ normative, habitual, intentional, and situational factors related to their bottled water purchasing. In low, moderate, and high policy awareness groups, habit was the strongest direct predictor of behavior. Normative factors had a strong effect in explaining intentions; in addition, awareness of consequences was directly related with behavior in the high policy awareness group. However, situational factors were insignificant predictors of self-reported behavior. Based on the results of the current study, we suggest that to achieve policy-congruent behavior, policy makers should consider both policy-reinforcing incentives and the level of policy awareness of the targeted group.

Pro-environmental behavior has been extensively studied using general models of predicting behavior; however, these models have very limited value in making inferences about individuals. To address this shortcoming, a person-oriented investigation of five pro-environmental behaviors differing in complexity was carried out using a clustering approach. A total of 863 adolescents (mean age 15.72 (SD = 1.1), 53.5% female) filled in the Big Five Inventory and measures of recycling, water conservation, electricity conservation, sustainable consumption, and sustainable transportation use based on an extended model of the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB). TPB models were investigated in empirically derived clusters of individuals that differ by their personality traits. The results suggest that individuals in different personality clusters could be reached effectively through different means when trying to promote pro-environmental behaviors and different pro-environmental behaviors should not be regarded as homogeneous.

It is often thought that environmental campaigns aimed at changing human behavior to be more environmentally friendly should target individuals’ intrinsic values and other personal variables. An evolutionary approach to human behavior, however, proposes a different perspective for tackling the pressing environmental issues of our times by making use of (rather than trying to change) our innate behavioral tendencies to make pro-environmental behavior the default and most adaptive option. The presented evolutionary approach proposes that changing behavioral outcomes might be more prudent than trying to change people. Better environmental and social outcomes are possible if we were to make use of our evolutionary past rather than fight it.

Contribution to climate change mitigation is required for all world countries. Post-Soviet countries’ climate change policy strategies by 2030 (2035) were adopted relatively recently. Thus, the aim of this study is to analyze the achievements of climate change policy, encompassing carbon emissions, energy intensity, and renewable energy consumption, in separate Post-Soviet countries and to reveal the possibilities of reaching their long-term 2030–2035 targets. The results showed huge differences in carbon emissions, energy intensity, and the share of renewable energy consumption among Post-Soviet countries. Analyzing the trends of climate change policy implementation in almost all Post-Soviet countries (except Ukraine and Uzbekistan), carbon pollution increased during the analyzed period (2002–2014). The highest growth of emissions was observed in Georgia and Tajikistan. Furthermore, the economic development level was positively and significantly related to the level of carbon emissions. During the 2002–2014 period, energy intensity decreased in all Post-Soviet countries, particularly in those where the level was lower. The share of renewable energy consumption increased the most in countries that are members of the EU (Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia) and Moldova, which declared its willingness to join the EU. However, the energy intensity and the share of renewable energy consumption were insignificantly related to the level of economic development. Analyzing the possibility of achieving the Post-Soviet countries’ climate change policy targets, the results showed that only some of them will succeed. Therefore, Post-Soviet countries should implement more efficient climate change policies and effective tools in order to achieve their targets.

Three field studies using norm-based public service announcements were carried out in a university context. The studies yielded inconclusive results, pointing toward the need to investigate the contextual and individual effectiveness of persuasive communication based on making social norms salient. The presented studies are discussed as the first steps in introducing persuasive pro-environmental communication in a specific university context and some ways forward are proposed.

The aim of the present study is to assess whether reinforcing imagery affects the emotional valence and effectiveness of pro-environmental public service announcements (PSAs). Two experiments that utilized PSAs constructed from a combination of text-based appeal and an image were carried out. The first experiment used the following appeals; (1) highlighting injunction, (2) highlighting injunction together with a negative descriptive norm, and (3) highlighting injunction together with a positive descriptive norm. These appeals were written on a photograph that either depicted nature scenery or the same scenery with digitally added litter. The results of the first experiment demonstrated that a congruent combination of text appeals highlighting injunction together with a positive descriptive norm and positive descriptive imagery elicits the most positive emotions when compared to other appeal and image combinations. The second experiment demonstrated that appeals with positive descriptive norms and an injunctive message coupled with a congruent descriptive image affect behavioral intention more than appeals with an injunctive only message coupled with a congruent descriptive image, thus demonstrating the additive effect of descriptive imagery and appeals presented together.

The promotion of pro-environmental behavior is regarded as very important in solving environmental problems. The Value-Belief-Norm (VBN) theory usually emphasizes internal factors; however, we have transformed this theory by including the environmental knowledge as an external factor. The results showed that action-related environmental knowledge was related to the ecological worldview and directly influenced the private sphere behavior. The ecological worldview, which in this paper was operationalized as environmental concern, had a direct effect on public sphere behavior and an indirect effect on private behavior through awareness of behavioral consequences. Thus, in this paper we revealed how specific environmental knowledge influenced pro-environmental behavior. We also suggest that it is important to educate people about local and global environmental problems, about the impact of behavior on the environment not only in private but also in the public sphere, and to foster the ecocentrism, as well. In addition, we revealed the meaning and necessity of education for environmental citizenship.

A meta-analysis was carried out to investigate the relationship between connectedness with nature, environmental identity, and environmental self-identity. Through meta-analyzing these relationships, we are able to assess the true estimate of their magnitude. The results revealed a strong correlation between measures of connectedness with nature and environmental identity (r = .75 [0.67, 0.83], k = 11) as well as environmental self-identity (r = .57 [.31, .84], k = 5). Further moderation analysis indicated that the relationship between connectedness with nature and environmental identity is different for graphical and questionnaire instruments used for assessing connectedness with nature; the aggregated correlation for graphical instruments (r = .62 [.56, .67], k = 9) was significantly lower than for questionnaires (r = .82 [.74, .91], k = 9). We suggest revisiting the various instruments assessing human–nature relatedness to maximize unique variance among them.

The health benefits of a sustainable environment are numerous: from clean air and water, to spaces for recreation and regeneration, but in order to attain sustainable environments, there first needs to be a shift towards pro-environmental behaviour on the individual, as well as on the societal level.3 Personality traits have been investigated as predictors of pro-environmental behaviour in order to understand how to better explain and promote pro-environmental behaviour, yet often such studies yield small or even insignificant effects because personality traits are not very good predictors of specific behaviours.6 Despite that, most research indicates that socially desirable personality traits such as extraversion, openness, conscientiousness and agreeableness are usually positively related to pro-environmental behaviour, while neuroticism is negatively related to pro-environmental behaviour.3 5 Correlational results between pro-environmental behaviours and personality traits, however, are often inconsistent and even if the effects are in the predicted direction, they are …

Persuasive messages that are tailored to target innate biases and behavioral tendencies have been shown to be effective in promoting pro-environmental behaviors. There is, however, a lack of understanding whether individuals who have different patterns of personality traits react to these stimuli differently. The present study addressed precisely this question. Persuasive pro-environmental messages were placed in a school and changes in pro-environmental intentions and related variables of the adolescents attending that school were observed. The findings show that adolescents with different patterns of personality traits are indeed differently affected by persuasive messages and people with different patterns of personality traits in general approach pro-environmental behaviors quite differently. This has important practical implications for the creation of public service announcements aimed at promoting pro-environmental behavior.

In the light of global environmental problems, investigating pro-environmental behaviors is becoming increasingly popular and relevant. The present study is aimed at investigating some of the most common pro-environmental behaviors (recycling, using environmentally friendly transportation, conserving water, and conserving electricity) of Lithuanian university students. A total of 282 university students from several Lithuanian universities enrolled in various study programs participated in the survey. Participants filled in measures based on the theory of planned behavior, as well as measures for their value orientations and their perceived descriptive norms of pro-environmental behaviors. The results showed that perceived behavioral control and personal norms towards sustainable behaviors more or less consistently predict the investigated behaviors, while attitudes towards behavior do not necessarily translate into behavioral intentions; moreover the role of value orientations or perceived descriptive norms might not be that substantial in understanding pro-environmental behaviors. Some suggestions for future research and for promoting pro-environmental behavior are presented.
