The long-term goal of Dr. Chung’s research is to determine the lifelong effects and mechanisms underlying an abnormal maternal metabolic environment on the health of offspring and discover a therapeutic strategy for treating or preventing childhood obesity. Her current research projects focus on 1) determining contractile properties of the heart in male and female offspring in response to maternal obesity with and without exercise, 2) determining oxidative stress and the mitochondrial respiratory function as the underlying mechanisms of maternal obesity and exercise on the cardiometabolic health of offspring, and 3) developing an effective small molecule inhibitor to fight against obesity and associated disorders.
