The landing string is an important component of deepwater riserless drilling systems. Determination of the dynamic characteristics of the landing string plays an essential role in its design for ensuring its safe operation. In this paper, a dynamic model is developed to investigate the dynamic response characteristics of a landing string, where a landing string in a marine environment is modeled as a flexible slender tube undergoing coupled transverse and axial motions. The heaving motion of the drilling platform is taken as the upper boundary condition and the motion of the drilling bit caused by the interaction between the rock and the bit as the lower boundary condition. A semiempirical Morison equation is used to simulate the effect of the load imposed by the marine environment. The dynamic model, which is nonlinearly coupled and multibody, is discretized by a finite element method and solved by the Newmark technique. Using the proposed model, the dynamic responses of the displacement, axial force, and moment in the landing string are investigated in detail to find out the influences of driving depth of surface catheter, platform motion, bit movement, and marine environment on the dynamical characteristics of the landing string.

This paper designs a new class of actuators for the downhole traction robot system to achieve high-accuracy transmission, which is realized by the planetary roller screw mechanism (PRSM). As the downhole environment is a non-structure one, which increases the difficulty of the load analyses and distributions of the downhole robot system to complete a predesigned mission. Traditional achievements about the mechanical behavior analyses of PRSM ignore the effects of radial loads and torque elastic deformation errors, which are inevitable for the downhole robot actuator, and the results of which would affect the load distribution and fatigue life of the PRSM-aided actuator. To assist the complex task, in this study the mechanical behavior analyses of PRSM for the downhole robot system are investigated by considering axial loads, torque elastic deformation errors, and radial loads. Moreover, the calculation models for contact load distribution and fatigue life are established by utilizing the equivalent contact load and Hertz contact theory. Two cases for the robot actuator in the downhole environment are addressed, the results of which indicate that the contact load change and decrease with the thread growth direction of the PRSM, the first several threads bore most of the loads, and the last several threads only took a few loads. Additionally, the fatigue life reduces sharply under the condition that the axial loads, radial loads, and rotation speeds increase. Compared with the other two effectors, the fatigue life is more sensitive to the radial loads. The results show the sustainability of the presented screw–roller–nut and provide a potential reference for the downhole robot actuator motion analyses.

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to study the multi-phase flow behaviors in solid fluidization exploitation of natural gas hydrate (NGH) and its effect on the engineering safety.Design/methodology/approach: In this paper, a multi-phase flow model considering the endothermic decomposition of hydrate is established and finite difference method is used to solve the mathematical model. The model is validated by reproducing the field test data of a well in Shenhu Sea area. Besides, optimization of design parameters is presented to ensure engineering safety during the solid fluidization exploitation of NGH in South China Sea.Findings: To ensure the engineering safety during solid fluidization exploitation of marine NGH, taking the test well as an example, a drilling flow rate range of 40–50 L/s, drilling fluid density range of 1.2–1.23 g/cm3 and rate of penetration (ROP) range of 10–20 m/h should be recommended. Besides, pre-cooled drilling fluid is also helpful for inhibiting hydrate decomposition.Originality/value: Systematic research on the effect of multiphase flow behaviors on the engineering safety is scare, especially for the solid fluidization exploitation of NGH in South China Sea. With the growing demand for energy, it is of great significance to ensure the engineering safety before the large-scale extraction of commercial gas from hydrate deposits. The result of this study can provide profound theoretical bases and valuable technical guidance for the commercial solid fluidization exploitation of NGH in South China Sea.

A considerable number of studies for VIV under the uniform flow have been performed. However, research on VIV under shear flow is scarce. An experiment for VIV under the shear flow with the same shear parameter at the two different Reynolds numbers was conducted in a deep-water offshore basin. Various measurements were obtained by the fiber bragg grating strain sensors. Experimental data were analyzed by modal analysis method. Results show several valuable features. First, the corresponding maximum order mode of the natural frequency for shedding frequency is the maximum dominant vibration mode and multi-modal phenomenon is appeared in VIV under the shear flow, and multi-modal phenomenon is more apparent at the same shear parameter with an increasing Reynolds number under the shear flow effect. Secondly, the riser vibrates at the natural frequency and the dominant vibration frequency increases for the effect of the real-time tension amplitude under the shear flow and the IL vibration frequency is the similar with the CF vibration frequency at the Reynolds number of 1105 in our experimental condition and the IL dominant frequency is twice the CF dominant frequency with an increasing Reynolds number. In addition, the displacement trajectories at the different locations of the riser appear the same shape and the shape is changed at the same shear parameter with an increasing Reynolds number under the shear flow. The diagonal displacement trajectories are observed at the low Reynolds number and the crescent-shaped displacement trajectories appear with an increasing Reynolds number under shear flow in the experiment.
