Babak J. Mehrara currently serves as the chief of the Plastic and Reconstructive Surgical Service and holds the Peter G. Cordeiro Endowed Chair in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the prestigious Babak J. Mehrara Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. He completed his BA at Boston University in 1989, followed by his MD from Columbia University in the City of New York in 1993. He underwent his General Surgery residency at New York University Medical Center, followed by his Plastic Surgery residency at the same institution. He further completed his Fellowship in Microsurgery from the University of California Los Angeles Medical Center. He has been recognized for his expertise and contributions to the field of plastic and reconstructive surgery by various prestigious organizations. He was awarded as one of the New York Magazine’s Top Doctors by Castle Connolly in 2010, 2013, and 2016–2020. He was also recognized as one of America’s Top Doctors by Castle Connolly in 2023, and as one of the Top Doctors in the New York Metro Area by Castle Connolly in 2023. He specializes in microsurgery, which involves transplanting tissues from one part of the body to another by reconnecting small blood vessels using a microscope. He also has extensive experience in reconstruction performed with perforator flaps, including deep inferior epigastric artery perforator (DIEP) flap and gluteal artery perforator (GAP) flap surgery for breast reconstruction.
