The demand for innovative approaches applied to productive sectors is a reality present in the circular economy and open innovation is a relatively new concept that has revolutionized the literature about innovation management. Since the concept appeared in 2003, many articles have focused on its development and application. Although some studies have connected open innovation with sustainability, the relevance of this current on the global literature about open innovation is still unidentified. In this context, this paper tries to cover this gap with a bibliometric analysis focused on the evolution of the open innovation paradigm and the relevance of sustainability in this field of research. A sample of 3087 papers published between 2003 and 2019 in the Scopus database was obtained. The analysis revealed the main topics and the most prolific journals, authors, institutions, and countries, in terms of productivity, citations, and h-indexes. Besides of these contributions, keywords analysis reveals that, in recent years, sustainability and ecosystems are decisive variables in open innovation research.

While corporate managers are under moral obligation to run their corporations in a sustainable way, the growing corporate sustainability challenges necessitate the growing complexity of decisions which need to be made by managers. To help managers to deal with these trends, the paper proposes a novel conception of “moral wayfinding”, a term inspired by Chia’s (2017) process-philosophic approach to organizational learning. Moral wayfinding relies on the immersive engagement of individual managers with their social environments in a way that infuses their mindsets with the moral commitment to the long-run sustainability of their corporations. In addition to process philosophy, the idea of moral wayfinding draws inspiration from systems theory, stakeholder theory, and business ethics in order to fill some of the gaps in the extant approaches to managerial guidance. Systems theory illuminates the complexity of sustainability issues but tends to miss the complexity of moral decision making; business ethics embraces the latter complexity but struggles to link it to the rational self-interest which is further reinforced by the Luhmannian systems-theoretic idea of complexity reduction. The process-philosophic idea of moral wayfinding integrates these literatures and thus supports the moral motivation of managers to pursue corporate sustainability.

Global alliances have traditionally been related to improvements in the economic and operational performances of companies, particularly in the airline industry. However, we still do not know the effect of the participation in this kind of multilateral agreement on the environmental performance of airlines. The main aim of this work is to analyze whether the alliance membership of airlines has an effect upon their environmental performance, and if so, whether or not the characteristics of the global alliance, as well as the business model of the airline, may influence this relation to a greater or lesser extent. The results of regression and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) in a sample of 252 airlines (58 included in one of the three global alliances: Star Alliance, Oneworld, and SkyTeam) show a strong and inverse relationship between environmental performance and belonging to an alliance. The paper also shows empirical evidence of the influence of the business model of the airline on environmental performance. These results suggest important implications for managers facing challenges regarding sustainability.

The aim of the study is to identify the factors that influence innovation activities associated with business management, known in the academic world as organizational innovation. Data was gathered by administering a survey on the managers or owners of hotels in the province of Santa Elena, Ecuador. Three components of organizational innovation were analyzed: methods of organizing job positions, work organization practices and management of external relations; all of which were tested with both internal variables (individual and structural characteristics) and variables external to the firms.

The earth and the natural world have physical limits. Thus, industries or firm systems operating on this planet have limits as well. Infinite growth is intrinsically impossible. Some firms have integrated these principles into their management methods while struggling to survive in a traditional competitive environment with short‐term economic constraints. This paper explores the managerial practices that help firm systems address these paradoxical tensions of being responsible for the environment and having a long‐term degrowth orientation while also successfully competing in traditional capitalistic markets. Using a social system approach, the paper applies functional differentiation focusing on the internal aspects of the management of the firm. The paper highlights that the role of each subsystem can be crucial for integrating the survival of the firm system and the natural system's limits. Each subsystem has a potential effect on the natural system that can be analysed and managed in a specific way.

In this article, we draw on established views of CSR dysfunctionalities to show how and why CSR is regularly observed to be both shaped by and supportive of capitalism. We proceed to show that these dysfunctionalities are maintained by both the pro- and anticapitalist approaches to CSR, both of which imply an ill-defined separation of the economy and society as well an overly strong problem or solution focus on political and economic issues. Finally, we present a post-capitalist approach to CSR that overcomes (1) the ill-defined separation of the economy and society, (2) the capitalist bias towards economic rationalities, and (3) the overidentification of society with its political system; this approach thus helps to manage the abovementioned CSR dysfunctionalities.

Sustainability is a complex problem affecting multiple firms, groups, and communities, and environmental solutions need to be developed in collaboration with the industry's most relevant stakeholders.Focusing on the aviation industry, we analyze the process of generating shared knowledge from an embeddedness perspective, proposing that firms are embedded in both society and markets through networks of relationships that influence their behaviour and sustainability outcomes. This paper proposes a collaborative framework that includes academic, institutional, and company levels to improve aviation using three different tools – stakeholder engagement, alliances, and open innovation. Finally, the paper includes recommendations oriented to face the more relevant environmental issues using this approach. Copyright © 2018 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd and ERP Environment

This study explores the relationship between high-performance human resource practices and organizational outcomes, using organizational learning capability as a mediating variable. By analyzing a sample of 85 Spanish companies in the chemical industry, the results suggest that the application of high-performance human resource practices is positively related to the development of organizational learning capability. This, in turn, is positively related to the financial and non-financial firm’s performance. The mediating role of learning capability is useful and should be considered in studies that analyze the link between human resource practices and performance, a central topic in the literature on strategic human resource management. Additionally, this study provides indications which can help companies design suitable conditions for promoting organizational learning capability, which is directly related to the development of human resource systems.

In this article, we analyze the relationship between the main dimensions of organizational structure (i.e., formalization, centralization, and complexity) and ecological responsiveness in a sample of 109 firms in the European air passenger transport industry. Broadly confirming our hypotheses, the results show that high formalization of routine tasks favors ecological responsiveness. Structures characterized by high decentralization and low complexity also favor ecological responsiveness. Furthermore, decentralization has a significant, positive relationship with ecological responsiveness among firms with low vertical complexity. Overall, the results indicate that organizational structure plays a major role in ecological responsiveness.

This article examines the effect of different types of cooperation partners on product innovation in new ventures and in established companies. We argue that the effectiveness of interorganizational cooperation depends on how the resources or capabilities the partners provide match the different characteristics of new ventures and established companies. Specifically, we argue that new ventures cooperate under a cost-economizing and risk-sharing logic; consequently, other new ventures, small firms, universities/research centers and financial institutions are suitable partners. Conversely, large established companies and public administrations are better partners for established companies because they are more motivated to enter into innovation partnerships based on a strategic rationale. We use data from 2473 firms operating in intensive innovation sectors in cluster-like environments in 32 European countries. By using different proxies for product innovation, our results generally confirm our arguments. These findings yield relevant contributions to the study of innovation, new ventures and interorganizational cooperation and provide salient implications for practitioners.

Green competences are dynamic capabilities based on practices (green practices), routines and structures that can be used to detect opportunities, make the most of them and use them to transform organizations. With this in mind, we explore the relationships between environmental management, organizational performance, and organizational processes and practices. We identify three key constructs related to green competences: (1) hybrid structures, (2) environmental best practices and (3) strategic flexibility, a key variable connecting structural design and green practices to organizational performance. We propose that the implementation of specific organizational structures characterized by the inclusion of market‐driven control practices within hierarchies (internal hybrids) could enhance firms' environmental responsiveness and deployment of green best practices. In addition, we suggest that green practices and structures are positively related to the development of strategic flexibility, driving above‐average returns in dynamic environments. To test these hypotheses, we use data from the European aviation industry. Copyright © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd and ERP Environment

The process of designing the environmental practices of an organization can be developed internally or outsourced to a specialized contractor. When managers make such decisions, they set the boundaries of their firm and determine its organizational structure. Drawing on Transaction Cost Economics (TCE) and search theory, we conceptualize the impact of boundary-setting decisions as an antecedent of corporate environmental performance. We test our hypothesis using a sample of 357 Welsh companies. Our results show that a) firms outsourcing a higher extent of their environmental design will have a more complete and better environmental performance; b) firms using more than one contractor will obtain better results than firms relying on one.
