The aim of this paper is to study the influence of corporate social responsibility (CSR) over small and medium‐sized enterprise (SME) innovation and the effect of two mediating variables, debt terms and human capital. Based on a sample of 2825 Spanish SMEs and applying a structural equations modeling, the results demonstrate that the effect of CSR on innovation is mediated by debt terms and by good human resource practices. Part of the positive effect of CSR on innovation occurs through these two variables, which, alone, positively and significantly affect innovation in SMEs. Consequently, the positive effect of CSR practices on debt terms through a decrease in asymmetric information goes further, also having repercussions on innovation. Additionally, the suitable development of human resource practices based on strategies oriented toward CSR allow companies to carry out greater and more efficient innovative activities. This paper contributes to the CSR literature considering the human resource management and the debt access in the relationship between CSR and innovation. The findings reveal important implications for policy makers and managers. For the former, the results show that it would be interesting to carry out actions aimed at assisting SMEs, especially those with fewer resources available, to implement a suitable CSR strategy, supporting sustainable development in SMEs. And, for the latter, CSR‐oriented innovation has proven to be a valuable strategy for more efficient SMEs management because of the multiple competitive advantages it generates.

The purpose of this research is to study whether open innovation practices in SMEs favour technological innovations and the drivers of these. We propose a model of SME open innovation based on human capital (HC) approach and the commitment to learning with an emphasis on the risk taking and the formalization of an innovation strategy. The results, on a sample of 267 SMEs, show that a manager’s attitude to risk-taking and the formalization of an innovation strategy are the most important variables which promote SME open innovation. Innovation strategy formalization leverages the impact of HC and commitment to learning on open innovation, identifying an important mediating effect. Finally, open innovation activities promote product and process innovation, although this effect is greater for outbound activities. These findings have important implications for both managers and policy-makers.

This research, grounded on the organizational information processing theory, studies whether the digital enabling technologies of Industry 4.0 (I4.0) impact innovation in small and medium enterprises (SMEs), and what role innovation strategies play in promoting I4.0 in SMEs. We consider two types of enablers, information and communication digital enabling technologies (IDETs) and advanced robotics and integration digital enabling technologies (ADETs), according to their nature, to demonstrate that different I4.0 enabling technologies play different roles in SME innovations. Results from 109 SMEs show that strategic planning fosters I4.0, and innovation is promoted more intensively by IDETs than by ADETs, with both technologies exerting mediating effects in the relationship between strategy and innovation. Finally, innovation has positive effects on performance.

This research analyses the influence of internal capabilities, identified as strategic by the literature, on the performance and innovation of Spanish construction companies during a recessionary period. Based on this, we studied whether innovative, marketing, financial, managerial, and human capabilities affect competitive success in terms of fostering innovation and the performance of firms. Empirical evidence is provided by performing survey research with a sample of 94 Spanish construction firms. The results show that firm innovation is fostered by innovative, financial, and human capabilities, and that performance is promoted by innovation, and financial and human capabilities. Human capabilities have the most important effect on both innovation and the performance of the company.

In complex situations with risks of critical irreversibility, decision-makers must be able to take action quickly but also appropriately, especially in response to unexpected events. In these situations, “the first error in the trial-and-error-learning will also be the last trial” (Weick & Sutcliffe, 2011: 20). This paper assesses the contribution of the meta rule concept, defined as the conditions to respect to maintain the integrity of the organization in an unexpected situation. Our design tests the relevance of two conceptual approaches: high reliability organizations (HRO) and sensemaking approaches. The main proposal of this research is to highlight that, for a decision-maker, understanding a situation through meta rules at key times limits the risk of information overload by facilitating an overall understanding of the situation. It becomes possible to make decisions quickly, if necessary, using new robust and reliable strategies. Using a quantitative study of the behaviors of a warship bridge team composed of cadets in the French Naval Academy, the authors tested various situations that young officers have to manage. The results highlighted that meta rules play a positive mediating effect between rules and reliability and between interactions and reliability. With the use of meta rules, the overall reliability level is higher when employing an HRO approach than when using a sensemaking approach.

Purpose This study aims to empirically identify the relationship between gender diversity and organizational leadership. Design/methodology/approach A multifactor questionnaire, Form 6-S, developed by Bass and Avolio (1992), is used to measure leadership. The results are derived from univariate and multivariate analyses conducted through ordinary least square linear regression. This study uses a base consisting of 142 small and medium enterprises in Cali (Colombia); men manage 111 of which, whereas women manage 31. The data came from a project performed by the Humanism and Management research group of the Administration Sciences Department of Valley University (Universidad del Valle). Fieldwork was conducted between November 2013 and April 2014. Findings The results show that companies with greater gender diversity (mostly women on the board of directors and in management) develop a transformational organizational style orientated towards organizational change through the transformation of followers. Originality/value There is no previous study combining these variables in Colombian context.

In this study, we investigate whether accounting information quality is affected by the special characteristics of small- and medium-sized family firms. These companies have a particular power and management structure and different stockholder interests, compared to large companies. We go a step further than prior literature and use a multidimensional approach based on the Family Influence on Power, Experience, and Culture (F-PEC) scale to assess heterogeneity among family firms. Additionally, we develop a comprehensive approach that considers discretional accruals, real earnings, and accounting information quality measurements such as conservatism and earnings persistence. Our findings, based on a sample of 252 small- and medium-sized Spanish family manufacturing firms, show that the ‘Power’ dimension decreases the quality of financial reporting, whereas ‘Experience’ promotes earnings persistence and conservatism; finally, ‘Culture’ curbs earnings management in terms of real earnings and favours both earnings persistence and conservatism. Consequently, according to our results, family businesses that resemble our sample firms should promote family involvement in terms of culture and experience, while limiting power inside the company.

This study considers whether the specific governance mechanisms of Spanish family firms decrease their debt cost. We explore the idea of reducing debt costs through specific governance mechanisms of family firms, such as the business succession plan, the family council, as well as other traditional mechanisms like the board of directors. Because most corporate governance research has focused on larger firms, more research on smaller privately held family firms is necessary. For this empirical research, we used a sample of 281 small and medium-sized family firms. The results show that the implementation of a business succession plan not only serves to solve family conflicts and to plan the business succession but also moderates the cost of financing. Our results confirm that credit institutions receive a positive signal when family firms implement business succession plans as governance mechanisms, reducing both family opportunism and asymmetries of information, influencing risk analysts in their decision-making processes.

International audienceThe purpose of this paper is to study how different university–firm governance styles impact SMEs' innovation and performance. In this sense, we differentiate between relational governance – based on interpersonal links of trust – and contractual governance — based on codified scientific and technological knowledge. The empirical analysis is based on data gathered through a questionnaire administered to a sample of 600 Spanish SMEs. The findings show that only contractual university–firm relationships have a direct and significant effect on innovation, whereas relational activities promote and support contractual activities. The findings have managerial implications not just for firms, but also for universities

The entrepreneurial intention in this work is addressed from the Theory of Planned Behavior. On the one hand, how personal abilities, such as creativity, proactivity, risk aversion and internal locus of control affect the multidimensional concept of entrepreneurial self-efficacy and the attitude toward entrepreneurship has been studied. Personal abilities can affect to entrepreneurial intention through the mediating effect caused by self-efficacy and attitude toward entrepreneurship. On the other hand, the mediation effect of the attitude toward entrepreneurship in the relationship between entrepreneurial self-efficacy and entrepreneurial intention to set up a company has been analyzed. A structural equations model (SEM) has been estimated using the method of partial least squares regression (PLS) with a sample composed of 1126 university students. The results show both direct and indirect effect on the relationship between personal abilities and entrepreneurial intention. In addition, results indicated the mediating effect of attitude toward entrepreneurship between entrepreneurial self-efficacy and entrepreneurial intention. These findings indicate that personal abilities play an important role in the understanding of the theory of planned behavior and could be used to promote entrepreneurship through several approaches.

Housing bubbles may result in deep crises that affect all economic systems. This study investigates how the recent housing bubble in Spain has affected earnings quality during the whole bubble. To this end, we use data on mostly private construction activity firms in Spain, that is, construction and real estate companies. Earnings quality is studied by means of the predictive ability of earnings, conservatism, discretionary accruals and real earnings management. The results indicate a progressive decrease in the quality of financial reporting as the bubble develops, as managers try to conceal an underlying downward trend. We further show that earnings quality continues to decline even after the bubble bursts. Overall, this contribution, together with those of other environments, may suggest that, in a bubble context, we have to take care of firms’ earnings quality even some years before the crisis comes to the fore.

Purpose The aim of this paper is to explore how entrepreneurial skills (such as creativity, proactivity, and risk tolerance) and socio-cultural factors (such as role model and businessman image) affect secondary education students’ propensity towards entrepreneurial options in their future careers. Design/methodology/approach A sample of secondary education students in the Region of Murcia (Spain) has been used. Data were collected through questionnaires and analysed using logit estimation. Confirmatory Factorial Analysis (CFA) was used to validate the measures. Findings The results of this research study show that both the skills and socio-cultural factors positively affect entrepreneurial intention of secondary education students. Creativity, proactivity and risk taking promote entrepreneurial career. In addition, those students whose role model is an entrepreneur and have a better understanding of him or her, show a greater propensity towards entrepreneurial career. Originality/value The contribution to the literature on entrepreneurship is twofold. Firstly, although there are studies focused on identifying the entrepreneurial profile of university students, there is a paucity of empirical evidence relating to entrepreneurial skills at earlier stages of learning. This paper sets out to bridge this research gap. Secondly, evidence of the importance of socio-cultural factors, role models and entrepreneurial image upon the career orientation of secondary education students is identified and empirically verified. These findings involve are useful in practice, in aiding the design of better and more relevant education programs at early learning stages.

This paper is a preliminary study about the main variables that impact on well-being and the use of work-life balance (WLB) practices, bearing in mind the type of employment, entrepreneurs versus non-entrepreneurs. The relationship between being self-employed and well-being is at least controversial, as there are factors which hamper and foster this relationship. The study is based on the data obtained by means of a self-administered questionnaire addressed to a sample of 100 Spanish engineers. The first results show the existence of significant differences among the variables that generate well-being. In particular, entrepreneurs present a higher job and career satisfaction, enjoying a better social inclusion and WLB culture. In fact, the use of WLB practices among entrepreneurs is higher than among regular employees, which may be a stimulus to entrepreneurship. Being an entrepreneur is not as difficult as people think and this preliminary analysis shows that they may enjoy a more pleasant situation than employees.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to provide a better understanding of the determinants of small and medium-sized enterprises (SME) financing constraints and their impacts on investments in innovation. To explicate these factors, the authors use a general definition of innovation, distinguishing between product and process innovations, and highlight the role played by banking relationships. Design/methodology/approach On the basis of a literature review covering works specializing in innovation, financing constraints, and SME characteristics, a quantitative study is carried out in Spain, using a sample composed by 267 Spanish SMEs. Information was gathered by applying surveys addressed to the firm managers. Findings The findings reveal that financing constraints hinder innovation among Spanish SMEs functioning in hostile environments, though long-term banking relationships can moderate these financing constraints. The longer the duration of a firm’s banking relationship, the fewer financing constraints it faces, because the relationship significantly reduces information asymmetry. Practical implications To reduce financing constraints on their innovation, SMEs should establish long relationships and low debt concentration with their main bank. The more banks a firm works with, the greater its financing constraints. The findings have managerial implications, not just for firms but also for government policymakers and providers of consulting services. Originality/value This paper provides an in-depth analysis of the factors that affect innovation, along with insights into which financing constraints limit innovation during a severe recession.
