In the present paper, new pyrimidine derivatives were designed, synthesized and analyzed in terms of their anticancer properties. The tested compounds were evaluated in vitro for their antitumor activity. The cytotoxic effect on normal human dermal fibroblasts (NHDF) was also determined. According to the results, all the tested compounds exhibited inhibitory activity on the proliferation of all lines of cancer cells (colon adenocarcinoma (LoVo), resistant colon adenocarcinoma (LoVo/DX), breast cancer (MCF-7), lung cancer (A549), cervical cancer (HeLa), human leukemic lymphoblasts (CCRF-CEM) and human monocytic (THP-1)). In particular, their feature stronger influence on the activity of P-glycoprotein of cell cultures resistant to doxorubicin than doxorubicin. Tested compounds have more lipophilic character than doxorubicin, which determines their affinity for the molecular target and passive transport through biological membranes. Moreover, the inhibitory potential against topoisomerase II and DNA intercalating properties of synthesized compounds were analyzed via molecular docking.

This study evaluated in vitro antibacterial, antifungal, anticancer and antioxidant activities of methanolic leaf and root extracts from Solanum nigrum L. and determined its chemical composition. The chemical profile of S. nigrum L. extract was tested using liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). Disc diffusion and microdilution assays were used for the antibacterial activities. Antifungal activity was measured using the poisoned food technique. In vitro activity on the cell culture model was assessed by MTT assay, viability measurement and by determination of cellular ROS by DCFDA assay. The minimal inhibitory concentrations for extracts from aerial parts ranged from 125 to 500 μg/mL for gram-positive cocci and Pectobacterium strains. The growth inhibition coefficient ranged from 17–56%, depending on the dosage. The antifungal effect of S. nigrum extracts on the tested filamentous fungi depended on the dose. An inhibitory effect of 50–56% on fungi was observed against Alternaria alternata and Chaetomium globosum. The study showed a reduction in cellular vitality of THP1, A549, MCF7 and HeLa cancer lines using both extracts. In addition, there was a decrease in the number of viable cells in cultures incubated with the extract of aerial parts and a reduction in oxygen radicals in the cells. The obtained results indicate the possibility of using S. nigrum extracts from the aerial part as antimicrobial factors. Both extracts show chemopreventive properties by inhibiting the growth of cancer cells and reducing the level of free radicals. Both extracts show chemopreventive properties by inhibiting cancer cell growth and lowering free radical levels. The broad biological activity of the studied extracts can be used in agriculture, veterinary usages and medicine.

A family of o, p- and N-functionalized dihydro-2H-benzo-1,3-oxazines was synthesized and characterized. In vitro antimicrobial activity of the new benzoxazines was assessed against pathogenic fungi and Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria. The screened compounds showed significant in vitro antimicrobial effect, but introduction of the bulky substituent in the ortho position of the aryl ring caused a loss of their antibacterial efficacy. Cytotoxic assay results revealed that a molecule containing long alkyl chain substituents offered a remarkable viability of mouse fibroblast cells. Additionally, the liquid nature of alkyl-chain-modified monomers and the high processing windows indicate their high application potential.

Buckwheat husks are used in many therapeutic products such as pillows, mattresses, seats, etc. This material is proposed by producers for example for discopathy, back pain and head vasomotor disorders. Our studies evaluated the impact of using cotton mattresses with buckwheat husk fillings on people’s health condition. The main research was carried out on the group of 60 people divided into 3 groups (1—people with skeletal system problems, 2—people spending a lot of time lying with the probability of pressure ulcer formation and 3—healthy people). In addition, different tests have been carried out on the possibility of colonization of mattresses by fungi, bacteria and arthropod pests, and rheological, chemical and flammability tests. The research material in the form of buckwheat husks was tested in a diverse way. All tests indicate high usefulness of husks for therapeutic activity. This material was contaminated with fungi, bacteria and pests at a very low level, related to the natural colonization of buckwheat nuts during harvest and storage. The quality of the husks was also confirmed in rheological, chemical and flammability studies. Finally, this has also been confirmed in surveys conducted on people with health problems. The analyses show that the buckwheat husk is an excellent material that can be used to fill prophylactic mattresses. This has been confirmed by the results of laboratory tests and opinions of respondents using mattresses filled with buckwheat husk.

Goldenrod (Solidago gigantea Aiton) is a highly invasive species in Europe (e.g., Poland, Germany, and the Czech Republic) whose secondary metabolites can serve as potential sources of bioactive compounds. This study evaluated the phytochemical profile of S. gigantea extracts and evaluated their antibacterial, insecticidal, and phytotoxic activities. The extracts were found to be rich in flavonoids (TFC = 101 mg QE/g) and phenolics (TPC = 175 mg GAE/g), with chlorogenic acid and rutin as dominant constituents. Strong antibacterial activity was observed against Gram-positive bacteria, particularly Staphylococcus spp. (MIC90 = 2.3 mg/mL; MBC = 5 mg/mL), while Gram-negative bacteria were less sensitive, with moderate susceptibility in Rhizobium radiobacter and Pseudomonas syringae. The extract exhibited fungistatic activity against all tested filamentous fungi, with Fusarium species being the most sensitive (49–56% growth inhibition at 10 mg/mL). Insecticidal assays demonstrated significant mortality of Tribolium confusum adults at 2.5–7.0 mg/mL and feeding inhibition at concentrations as low as 0.5 mg/mL. Seedling growth tests showed dose-dependent effects—from mild suppression to moderate stimulation, varying by plant species. Foliar application revealed both stimulatory and inhibitory effects, with the strongest biomass reduction in cress at 10 mg/mL (−45%). These findings indicate that S. gigantea extracts possess potent antibacterial, antifungal, insecticidal, and allelopathic activities. Their concentration-dependent effects on pathogens and plants highlight potential applications in sustainable agriculture, including natural crop protection and integrated pest management.
