Prof. Michał Tomasz Kwiatek is a plant geneticist with over 15 years of experience in research in molecular cytogenetics, plant genomics and chromosome engineering. His work focuses on broadening the genetic diversity of cereals, particularly triticale and wheat, by introgressing chromatin from wild Aegilops species to improve resistance to fungal diseases, supporting sustainable agriculture and climate adaptation. He graduated in plant genetics and breeding from Poznań University of Life Sciences (2009), earned his PhD at the Institute of Plant Genetics, Polish Academy of Sciences (2013) and his habilitation in biotechnology (2018). In 2023 he was awarded the title of Professor by the President of Poland. He completed research stays at Aberystwyth University (UK) and IPK Gatersleben (Germany). From 2023 to 2026 he served as Deputy Director for Research at the Plant Breeding and Acclimatization Institute – NRI in Radzików, where he is a Professor, and remains Professor at Poznań University of Life Sciences. He has led projects funded by NCN, NCBR and the Ministry of Agriculture, and collaborates with Polish plant breeders. He has authored over 100 publications (50+ in JCR journals, h-index 16) and serves as an expert evaluator of projects for the National Centre for Research and Development (NCBR) and the European Commission. He has received the Stefan Barbacki National Scientific Award in plant genetics (2014) and the Smart Development Award “Scientist of the Future” (2020).
