The active development of the problems related to the assessment of the role of the pedosphere in global climate change involves the possibility of application of the quantitative determination of soil organic carbon (SOC) as one of the indicators of a climatic response. Here, the authors have summarized the results of their own research over many years (1985–2023), comprising more than 500 determinations of SOC within the area of the Chernozem zone, in the south of the East European Plain (Moldova and Bessarabia, southern Ukraine, southwestern Russia), in the context of regional climate differentiation using evaluations of climatic energy consumption for soil formation. The data were structured for each of the regions through the creation of series of agrogenic soil transformations (virgin land, modern-day ploughed land (100 years), fallow land of the modern era (n·10 years), and post-antique long-term fallow land). It has been established, by means of statistical treatment of the data, that the intraregional differentiation of the bioclimatic conditions is the key factor determining the SOC content in the top horizon of soils in the south of the East European Plain. The comparison of the SOC content within the five variants of land use demonstrated that all the regions under study differed, with statistical significance only found in a single type of ‘continually ploughed land’ (>100 years). This fact reflects the leading role of the duration of agrarian loads in agropedogenesis. If the steppe Chernozems even 145 years ago had a SOC content of up to 4%, then the Chernozems in the forest-steppe zone, which used to have habitats with a SOC content of 4–7%, occupied the largest areas, and have now lost 30–40% of the original values in the 0–50 cm layer. Besides the rates of the SOC degradation, which are known and are comprehensively evaluated in the present work, the phenomenon of progradation was established in certain situations, in particular arising during the rotation regime of land use (from ploughing to fallow fields, and vice versa), which stimulated effective mechanisms of reproduction of organic substances. Thus, in one of the ancient agricultural regions, where in antiquity the land was cultivated by such ancient Greek states as Tauric Chersonesos and the European Bosporos in Crimea, post-antique long-term fallow lands possess higher SOC contents than their virgin analogues. It is not justified to consider virgin lands as absolute references for the evaluation of the humus conditions since the analysis of agrogenic series of Chernozems has corroborated an essential role of the soil organo-mineral matrix in the formation of the carbon protection capacity.

An active process of the invasion of woody vegetation, resulting in the formation of light forests, has been observed in predominantly herbaceous small dry valleys of the forest-steppe uplands of the East European Plain over the past two decades. This paper investigates the spatial features of the density of trees in such light forests and its relationship with relief parameters. The Belgorod Region, one of the administrative regions of European Russia, was chosen as a reference for the forest-steppe zone of the plain. The correlation between some relief characteristics (the height, slope, slope exposure cosine, topographic position index, morphometric protection index, terrain ruggedness index, and width and depth of small dry valleys) and the density of light-forest trees was estimated. The assessment was carried out at the local, subregional and regional levels of generalization. The relief influence on the density of trees in the small dry valley network is manifested both through the differentiation of moisture within the territory under study and the formation of various conditions for fixing tree seedlings in the soil. This influence on subregional and regional trends in the density is greater than on local trends. The results obtained are important for the management of herbaceous small-dry-valley ecosystems within the forest-steppe uplands in Eastern Europe.

In the context of the transition to sustainable agriculture in Kazakhstan, the article considers one of its forms—organic farming. The adopted laws and by-laws not only have not contributed to but have also significantly hindered the development of organic farming due to the complexity of their implementation in the Kazakh legal field. The activities of Kazakhstani public organizations, deprived of any state support, are symbolic in nature. The absolute instability of organic production, the multidirectional long-term dynamics of the area of organic land and the cost yield of the products are demonstrated. The lack of demand for organic farming products among the population of Kazakhstan is due to socio-economic determinants, the dominance of livestock products in the nutrition structure of the indigenous population, only a small part of the inhabitants of megacities being the main consumers of any organic products, the exorbitant share of food costs and the high premium of organic products. The reasons for the ecological and economic instability of organic farming are the extensive development model, the lack of subsidiary obligations of the state and the zero-marginal cost of the export product. Conservative, utilitarian and innovative ways of developing organic farming are proposed.

In this study, we focused on the eastern part of the Cochlodina laminata range. Although this door snail is widespread in Europe, even a widespread species may lose habitats if future climate change projections are realized. The range shift is one of the consequences of climate change. We applied SDM methods to model the current potential range of C. laminata and the range shift after 40 and after 80 years. We used climatic parameters as predictors. The annual mean temperature has the greatest impact on the modeling results (about 30–60% among models). The precipitation of the warmest quarter also had a high relative importance (about 15–40% among models). For future projections, we considered two shared socio-economic pathways (ssp245 and ssp585). We applied three algorithms: the generalized additive model (GAM), support vector machine (SVM) and multilayer perceptron (MLP) and ensemble prediction. Our projections showed a decrease in habitable area in the eastern part of the range of C. laminata in 40 and in 80 years. According to the forecast, the habitat suitable area will become more fragmented. The range shift with new suitable areas is expected toward the east direction.

In this study, we analyse soil system responses—in particular, the colours of soils resulting from different types of land use (arable land and residential areas) caused by the construction of an ancient boundary rampart near a multilayer monument dating from between prehistory and the Middle Ages within the boundaries of the Bosporus Kingdom (Eastern Crimea)—in an area of modern and ancient (4th–2nd centuries BC) land use (Northwestern Crimea). These differences are of interest because they offer the chance to decipher different types of ancient land use and systems of land surveying, incorporating data from colour aerial photographs obtained with the help of unmanned aerial vehicles. Soil samples displaying different types of anthropogenic transformation were taken from the ancient boundary ramparts and adjacent land. The soil colour coordinates in the CIE L*a*b system were measured with the help of an AvaSpec-2048 spectrometer. Differences in colour coordinates were analysed using analysis of variance (NPMANOVA) based on the permutation test, the Kruskal–Wallis test, and the Mann–Whitney test, corrected according to multiple comparisons carried out as per the Bonferroni method. The results of this statistical analysis show that there are statistically significant differences in soil colour coordinates between samples collected on the ramparts and under various other types of land use. These differences are more pronounced in the samples characterised by the agrogenic transformation of soil. This makes it possible to use remote sensing data to detect traces of ancient boundary ramparts, even if the ramparts are partially destroyed by ploughing.
