Asphaltenes consist of a very complex material in which molecules and aggregates can have very different chemical composition and molecular weights. It is now well documented that asphaltenes show a very large size polydispersity. All these differences make their properties and behavior hard to describe. In order to gain insight into asphaltene properties, it could be useful to reduce this size polydispersity. Within this framework, two different approaches were used to reduce asphaltene size polydispersity: flocculation (using mixtures of solvents with anti-solvents) and membrane filtration. Various asphaltene fractions were obtained by both methods, and were further investigated using the following techniques: Size-Exclusion Chromatography (SEC), Elemental analysis, Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (13C-NMR) and Small-Angle X-ray Scattering (SAXS). It has been shown that asphaltenic aggregates of different sizes can be fractionated by membrane filtration in a more selective way than using the conventional solvent flocculation method. The effects of temperature and concentration on membrane separation performance were studied. When compared with large aggregates, small asphaltenic aggregates present lower aromaticity and higher aliphatic composition. Their alkyl chains also appear to be shorter and more alkylated. Elemental analysis indicates that smaller asphaltenes contain a lower metal concentration and are preferentially enriched in vanadium than nickel when compared with bigger aggregates.

The hydrodeoxygenation of model phenol compounds (phenol and 2-ethylphenol) was carried over unpromoted Mo/Al2O3 and promoted CoMo/Al2O3 catalysts. Hydrodeoxygenation proceeds by two pathways:– hydrogenation of the aromatic ring followed by Csp3-O bond cleavage (HYD pathway, (hydrogenation of the aromatic ring followed by Csp3-O bond cleavage));– direct cleavage of the Csp2-O bond (DDO pathway). Both routes were favored by the presence of Co on the catalyst, while the presence of the alkyl substituent on the phenolic ring favors the DDO route but inhibits the HYD pathway. IR (InfraRed) spectroscopy shows that while phenol mostly dissociates on these catalysts, a significant fraction of 2-ethylphenol remains non dissociated. The adsorption energies of both reactants and possible reaction intermediates on promoted and non-promoted sulfide phases as computed by DFT (Density-Functional Theory) confirm these findings and allow rationalizing the catalytic activity trends observed experimentally.

High-specific-surface-area MgF2 was prepared by microwave-assisted solvothermal synthesis. The influences of the solvent and the magnesium precursors, and the calcination atmospheres, on the nanoparticle sizes and specific surface areas, estimated by X-Ray Powder Diffraction, N2 sorption and TEM analyses, were investigated. Nanocrystallized (~7 nm) magnesium partially hydroxylated fluorides (MgF2−x(OH)x) with significant specific surface areas between 290 and 330 m2∙g−1 were obtained. After activation under gaseous HF, MgF2−x(OH)x catalysts underwent a large decrease of both their surface area and their hydroxide, rates as shown by their 19F and 1H solid-state NMR spectra. Expect for MgF2 prepared from the acetate precursor, an activity of 30–32 mmol/h∙g was obtained which was about 40% higher compared with that of MgF2 prepared using Trifluoroacetate method (21.6 mmol/h∙g).
