This paper explores the concept of smart cities and the role of the Internet of Things (IoT) and machine learning (ML) in realizing a data-centric smart environment. Smart cities leverage technology and data to improve the quality of life for citizens and enhance the efficiency of urban services. IoT and machine learning have emerged as key technologies for enabling smart city solutions that rely on large-scale data collection, analysis, and decision-making. This paper presents an overview of smart cities’ various applications and discusses the challenges associated with implementing IoT and machine learning in urban environments. The paper also compares different case studies of successful smart city implementations utilizing IoT and machine learning technologies. The findings suggest that these technologies have the potential to transform urban environments and enable the creation of more livable, sustainable, and efficient cities. However, significant challenges remain regarding data privacy, security, and ethical considerations, which must be addressed to realize the full potential of smart cities.

Medical images are helpful for the diagnosis, treatment, and evaluation of diseases. Precise medical image segmentation improves diagnosis and decision-making, aiding intelligent medical services for better disease management and recovery. Due to the unique nature of medical images, image segmentation algorithms based on deep learning face problems such as sample imbalance, edge blur, false positives, and false negatives. In view of these problems, researchers primarily improve the network structure but rarely improve from the unstructured aspect. The paper tackles these challenges, accentuating the limitations of deep convolutional neural network-based methods and proposing solutions to reduce annotation costs, particularly in complex images, and introduces the improvement strategies to solve the problems of sample imbalance, edge blur, false positives, and false negatives. Additionally, the article introduces the latest deep learning-based applications in medical image analysis, covering segmentation, image acquisition, enhancement, registration, and classification. Moreover, the article provides an overview of four cutting-edge deep learning models, namely convolutional neural network (CNN), deep belief network (DBN), stacked autoencoder (SAE), and recurrent neural network (RNN). The study selection involved searching benchmark academic databases, collecting relevant literature and appropriate indicator for analysis, emphasizing DL-based segmentation and classification approaches, and evaluating performance metrics. The research highlights clinicians’ and scholars’ obstacles in developing an efficient and accurate malignancy prognostic framework based on state-of-the-art deep-learning algorithms. Furthermore, future perspectives are explored to overcome challenges and advance the field of medical image analysis.

With the tremendous demand for connectivity anywhere and anytime, existing network architectures should be modified. To cope with the challenges that arise due to the increasing flood of devices/users and a diverse range of application requirements, new technologies and concepts must be integrated to enable their benefits. Service providers and business companies are looking for new areas of research to enhance overall system performance. This article gives a detailed survey about the recent 5G technologies, the solutions they provide, and the effect caused by their addition to current cellular networks. It is based on the three most important 5G concepts: Device to Device (D2D), Network Slicing (NS), and Mobile Edge Computing (MEC). This study proposes to design the future 5G networks by the integration of all three technologies. It is believed that spectrum efficiency, energy efficiency, and overall throughput will be greatly improved by using D2D. The system delay and computational load will be reduced as tasks will be handled by edge routers located at the base stations. Thus offloading the core network and the system capital expenses and operational expenses will be reduced significantly by slicing the network.

Ischemic Cardiovascular diseases are one of the deadliest diseases in the world. However, the mortality rate can be significantly reduced if we can detect the disease precisely and effectively. Machine Learning (ML) models offer substantial assistance to individuals requiring early treatment and disease detection in the realm of cardiovascular health. In response to this critical need, this study developed a robust system to predict ischemic disease accurately using ML-based algorithms. The dataset obtained from Kaggle encompasses a comprehensive collection of over 918 observations, encompassing 12 essential features crucial for predicting ischemic disease. In contrast, much-existing research relies primarily on datasets comprising only 303 instances from the UCI repository. Six ML-based algorithms, including K Nearest Neighbors (KNN), Random Forest (RF), Logistic Regression (LR), Support Vector Machine (SVM), Gaussian Naïve Bayes (GNB), and Decision Trees (DT), are trained on the ischemic heart data. The effectiveness of the proposed methodologies is meticulously evaluated and benchmarked against cutting-edge techniques, employing a range of performance criteria. The empirical findings manifest that the KNN classifier produced optimized results with 91.8% accuracy, 91.4% recall, 91.9% F1 score, 92.5% precision, and AUC of 90.27%.

Free space optical (FSO) communication is a wireless communication technology in which data is transferred from one point to another through highly directed beam of light. The main factors that limit the FSO link availability is the local weather conditions. It guarantees the potential of high bandwidth capacity over unlicensed optical wavelengths. The transmission medium of FSO is atmosphere and is significantly affected by the various weather conditions such as rain, fog, snow, wind, etc. In this paper, the modulation techniques under consideration are RZ, NRZ and CSRZ. Analysis is carried out regarding Q-factor with respect to varying distance, bit rates and input laser power.

Fifth Generation (5G) cellular networks aim to overcome the pressing demands posed by dynamic Quality of Service (QoS) constraints, which have primarily remained unaddressed using conventional network infrastructure. Cellular networks of the future necessitate the formulation of efficient resource allocation schemes that readily meet throughput requirements. The idea of combining Device-to-Device (D2D), Mobile Edge Computing (MEC), and Network slicing (NS) can improve spectrum utilization with better performance and scalability. This work presents a spectrum efficiency optimization problem in D2D based 5G-Heterogeneous Cellular Network (5G-HCN) with NS. Owing to the shortage of resources, we propose an underlay model where macro-cell users (MUs), small-cell users (SUs), and D2D users (DUs) reuse the resources while considering the effects of interference. The goal is to maximize the average network spectrum efficiency (SE) and throughput without degrading the system performance. The problem at hand is naturally a non-convex mixed-integer non-linear programming (MINLP) problem that is intractable. Therefore, we have suggested a distributed resource allocation strategy with an edge computing (DRA-EC) approach to find the sub-optimal solution. In distributed augmented Lagrange method, each edge router located at BS will solve its problem locally, and the consensus algorithm will find the global solution using these local estimates. The central slice controller will cut the customized network slices according to the bandwidth requirements of each user type with optimized spectrum information. The simulation outcomes prove that our proposed method is near the central optimization scheme with low computational complexity. It is much better because it reduces the computational time and system overhead.
