Leonard R. MacGillivray is a professor and the department chair (DEO) of the Department of Chemistry, University of Iowa. He received his B.Sc. (Hons.) from Saint Mary’s University in 1994, and earned his Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of Missouri—Columbia in 1998. He served as a research associate at the Steacie Institute for Molecular Sciences (SIMS), Ottawa (1998–2000), an adjunct research professor at Ottawa-Carleton Chemistry Institute (1999–2000), an assistant professor (2000–2005), and an associate professor (2005–2010) at the Department of Chemistry, University of Iowa, where he was promoted to professor in 2010. He is also a member of the American Crystallographic Association, the Inter-American Photochemical Society, and the American Chemical Society. His research keywords include molecular recognition; solid-state organic and inorganic chemistry; crystal photochemistry; and nanotechnology. He is interested in the synthesis of porous molecular solids and nanometer-scale molecular structures for applications in separations, catalysis, and molecular switching, and organic solid-state synthesis by design.
