The violent and persistent wildfires that broke out along the southeast coast of Australia in 2019 caused a large number of pollutant emissions, which seriously affected air quality and the global climate. The existing two methods for estimating combustion emissions based on burned area and fire radiative power mainly use a medium resolution imaging spectrometer (MODIS) on the Aqua and Terra satellites. However, the low temporal resolution of MODIS and insensitivity to small fires lead to deviation in the estimation of fire emissions. In order to solve this problem, the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) with better performance is adopted in this paper, combined with the fire diurnal cycle information obtained by geostationary satellite Himawari-8, to explore the spatio-temporal model of biomass combustion emissions. Using this, a high-spatial- and -temporal-resolution fire emission inventory was generated for southeastern Australia from November 2019 to January 2020, which aims to fully consider the highly dynamic nature of fires and small fires (low FRP) that are much lower than the MODIS burned area or active fire detection limit, with emphasis on dry matter burned (DMB). We found that during the study period, the fire gradually moved from north to south, and the diurnal cycle of the fire in the study area changed greatly. The peak time of the fire gradually delayed as the fire moved south. Our inventory shows that the DMB in southeast Australia during the study period was about 146 Tg, with major burned regions distributed along the Great Dividing Range, with December 2019 being the main burning period. The total DMB we calculated is 0.5–3.1 times that reported by the GFAS (Global Fire Assimilation System) and 1.5 to 4 times lower than that obtained using the traditional “Burned Area Based Method (FINN)”. We believe that the GFAS may underestimate the results by ignoring a large number of small fires, and that the excessive combustion rate used in the FINN may be a source of overestimation. Therefore, we conclude that the combination of high-temporal-resolution and high-spatial-resolution satellites can improve FRE estimation and may also allow further verification of biomass combustion estimates from different inventories, which are far better approaches for fire emission estimation.

Spatially location and working status of pollution sources are very important pieces of information for environment protection. Waste gas produced by fossil fuel consumption in the industry is mainly discharged to the atmosphere through a chimney. Therefore, detecting the distribution of chimneys and their working status is of great significance to urban environment monitoring and environmental governance. In this paper, we use an open access dataset BUAA-FFPP60 and the faster regions with convolutional neural network (Faster R-CNN) algorithm to train the preliminarily detection model. Then, the trained model is used to detect the chimneys in three high-resolution remote sensing images of Google Maps, which is located in Tangshan city. The results show that a large number of false positive targets are detected. For working chimney detection, the recall rate is 77.27%, but the precision is only 40.47%. Therefore, two spatial analysis methods, the digital terrain model (DTM) filtering, and main direction test are introduced to remove the false chimneys. The DTM is generated by ZiYuan-3 satellite images and then registered to the high-resolution image. We set an elevation threshold to filter the false positive targets. After DTM filtering, we use principle component analysis (PCA) to calculate the main direction of each target image slice, and then use the main direction to remove false positive targets further. The results show that by using the combination of DTM filtering and main direction test, more than 95% false chimneys can be removed and, therefore, the detection precision is significantly increased.

Existing research indicates that detecting near-surface methane point sources using Sentinel-2 satellite imagery can offer crucial data support for mitigating climate change. However, current retrieval methods necessitate the identification of reference images unaffected by methane, which presents certain limitations. This study introduces the use of a matched filter, developing a novel methane detection algorithm for Sentinel-2 imagery. Compared to existing algorithms, this algorithm does not require selecting methane-free images from historical imagery in methane-sensitive bands, but estimates the background spectral information across the entire scene to extract methane gas signals. We tested the algorithm using simulated Sentinel-2 datasets. The results indicated that the newly proposed algorithm effectively reduced artifacts and noise. It was then validated in a known methane emission point source event and a controlled release experiment for its ability to quantify point source emission rates. The average estimated difference between the new algorithm and other algorithms was about 34%. Compared to the actual measured values in the controlled release experiment, the average estimated values ranged from −48% to 42% of the measurements. These estimates had a detection limit ranging from approximately 1.4 to 1.7 t/h and an average error percentage of 19%, with no instances of false positives reported. Finally, in a real case scenario, we demonstrated the algorithm’s ability to precisely locate the source position and identify, as well as quantify, methane point source emissions.

In recent years, ozone pollution has been increasing in some parts of the world. In this study, we used the Beijing–Tianjin–Tangshan (BJ-TJ-TS) urban agglomeration region as a case study and used satellite remotely sensed inversion data and hourly ground monitoring observations of surface ozone concentrations, meteorological data, and other factors from 2016 to 2019 to explore the spatiotemporal dynamic characteristics of surface ozone concentration and its pollution levels. We also investigated their coupling relationships with meteorological factors, including temperature, pressure, relative humidity, wind velocity, and sunshine duration, in order to support the development of effective control measures for regional ozone pollution. The results revealed that the surface ozone concentration throughout the BJ-TJ-TS region from 2016 to 2019 exhibited an overall pattern of high values in the northwest and low values in the southeast, as well as an obvious difference between built-up and non-built-up areas (especially in Beijing). Meanwhile, a notable increasing trend of ozone levels was discovered in the BJ and TJ areas from 2016 to 2019, whereas this upward trend was not evident in the TS area. In all three areas, the highest monthly average ozone values occurred in the summer month of June, while the lowest monthly average levels occurred in the winter month of December. Their diurnal variation values reached a maximum value at approximately 3:00–4:00 p.m. and a minimum value at approximately 7:00 a.m. It is clear that high temperature, long sunshine duration, low atmospheric pressure, and weak wind velocity conditions, as well as certain relative humidity levels, readily led to high-concentration ozone pollution. Meanwhile, the daily average values of the five meteorological factors on days with Grade I and Grade II ozone pollution displayed different characteristics.

In order to alleviate the conflict between populations and land resource, Tianjin adopted multi-phase reclamation projects to the formed large-scale artificial reclamation land. The reclamation areas, however, are prone to subsidence, which poses a significant threat to infrastructure as well as the safety and assets of the residents. The SBAS-InSAR was used to acquire surface deformation of Tianjin Binhai New Area from January 2017 to December 2022, analyze in depth the response relationship between land subsidence, reclamation project time, and land-use type. There is a strong correlation between surface deformation and reclamation time. Severe land subsidence occurred over newly reclaimed areas. In the offshore direction, the deformation values of the Nangang Industrial Zone, the Lingang Industrial Zone, and Hangu Harbor were −98 mm to −890 mm, 45 mm to −580 mm, and −140 mm to −290 mm, respectively. Significant differences in deformation were detected among different land-use types where reclamation projects were completed in the same time. Subsidence was positively correlated with surface load; in areas with higher surface loads, the surface settlement was also more severe. The average surface settlement for the heavy shipyard, with 67 grain storage tanks and 27 grain storage tanks, road, and bare land were −201 mm, −166 mm, −107 mm, −64 mm, and −43 mm, respectively. This study reveals significant differences of surface deformation in the reclamation completed at different times, and determines that the load is the main driving factor of settlement difference in the reclamation land completed at the same time. This has important guiding significance for preventing and controlling geological disasters in the reclamation area and later development planning.

Lake Taihu has highly turbid inland waters with complex optical properties. Due to the bottom effect of submerged aquatic plants in optically shallow waters, currently available phytoplankton chlorophyll-a retrieval algorithms tend to overestimate chlorophyll-a concentrations in the eastern part of Lake Taihu. This overestimation can distort the eutrophication evaluation of the entire lake. This paper identifies submerged and emergent plants, determines the retrieval models for the upwelling (Ku) and downwelling (Kd) irradiance attenuation coefficients, and proposes a phytoplankton chlorophyll-a retrieval model using a water depth optimization-based method to remove the bottom effect. The results show the following: (1) The normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) method can distinguish the bottom mud (NDVI < −0.46) and submerged aquatic plants (−0.46 ≤ NDVI < 0.52) from the emergent plants (NDVI ≥ 0.52) with 90% accuracy. (2) The downwelling and upwelling irradiance attenuation coefficients are highly correlated with the suspended sediments, and retrieval models for these coefficients in three visible bands with high accuracy are presented. (3) Compared to traditional algorithms without bottom effect removal, the proposed chlorophyll-a concentration estimation algorithm based on the water depth-optimized bottom effect removal method efficiently reduces the bottom effect of the submerged aquatic plants. The root mean square error (RMSE) for the obtained chlorophyll-a concentrations decreases from 45.61 μg·L−1 to 8.69 μg·L−1, and the mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) is reduced from 245.12% to 19.58%. In the validation step, the obtained RMSE of 10.89 μg·L−1 and MAPE of 17.52% are consistent with the proposed algorithm. This research provides a good reference for the determination of chlorophyll-a concentrations in phytoplankton in complex inland water bodies. The findings are potentially useful for the operational monitoring of harmful algal blooms in the future.
