My research is focused on elucidating the role of plant antioxidant and redox components in the response of plants to abiotic stresses. During my PhD (1991-1997) with Prof. Francisca Sevilla (CEBAS-CSIC in Murcia, Spain) we described for the first time the presence of the ascorbate-glutathione cycle in mitochondria and peroxisomes and the role of this system in the response of plants to salinity. From 1997 to 1999 I joined Prof. Phil Mullineaux lab (John Innes Center, UK) studying the antioxidant system during tomato fruit ripening (Unilever project). Later on, as a hired researcher (Séneca Foundation, I3P-CSIC, Ramón y Cajal grants/contracts) in CEBAS, my research was focused antioxidants and redox systems during plant adaptation and fruit ripening. In 2006, I obtained the permanent position at CEBAS-CSIC and now I study the role of redox proteins thioredoxins in mitochondria and nucleus, and ROS/RNS metabolism in plant adaptation to oxidative stress and in the autophagy process.
