Drought is one of the most common natural disasters on a global scale and has a wide range of socioeconomic impacts. In this study, we analyzed the spatiotemporal variations of meteorological drought in a typical agricultural province of China (i.e., Shaanxi Province) based on the Standard Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI). We also investigated the response of winter wheat and summer maize yields to drought by a correlation analysis between the detrended SPEI and the time series of yield anomaly during the crop growing season. Moreover, agricultural drought risks were assessed across the province using a conceptual risk assessment model that emphasizes the combined role of drought hazard and vulnerability. The results indicated that droughts have become more severe and frequent in the study area after 1995. The four typical timescales of SPEI showed a consistent decreasing trend during the period 1960–2016; the central plains of the province showed the most significant decreasing trend, where is the main producing area of the province’s grain. Furthermore, the frequency and intensity of drought increased significantly after 1995; the most severe drought episodes occurred in 2015–2016. Our results also showed that the sensitivity of crop yield to drought varies with the timescales of droughts. Droughts at six-month timescales that occurred in March can explain the yield losses for winter wheat to the greatest extent, while the yield losses of summer maize are more sensitive to droughts at three-month timescales that occurred in August. The assessment agricultural drought risk showed that some areas in the north of the province are exposed to a higher risk of drought and other regions are dominated by low risk.

Microorganisms are instrumental in river ecosystems and participate in biogeochemical cycles. It is thought that dynamic hydrological processes in rivers influence microbial community assembly, but the seasonal succession and community assembly of river sediments on the Loess Plateau remain unclear. This study used high-throughput sequencing technology (16S and ITS) and the neutral community model to analyze seasonal succession and the assembly processes associated with microbial communities in the Dali River, a tributary of the Yellow River on the Loess Plateau. The results showed that sediment bacterial and fungal community diversity indexes in non-flood season were 1.03–3.15 times greater than those in flood season. There were obvious variations between non-flood and flood seasons in sediment microorganisms. The similarities among all, abundant, and rare microbial communities decreased as geographical distance increased. Proteobacteria (52.5–99.6%) and Ascomycota (22.0–34.2%) were the primary microbial phyla in all, abundant, and rare microbial communities. Sediment ammonia nitrogen, water temperature, and sediment organic carbon significantly affected (p < 0.05) the structure of all, abundant, and rare sediment microorganism communities. The ecological networks for the bacterial community of non-flood season and fungal community of flood season had complex topological parameters. The bacterial community in river sediments was driven by deterministic processes, while the fungal community was dominated by stochastic processes. These results expanded understanding about sediment microbial community characteristics in rivers on the Loess Plateau and provided insights into the assembly processes and the factors driving microbial communities in river networks.

Nitrogen and phosphorus are essential for plant growth and are the primary limiting nutrient elements. The loss of nitrogen and phosphorus in agricultural systems can cause the eutrophication of natural water bodies. In this paper, a field simulated rainfall experiment was conducted in a typical small watershed of the Danjiang River to study the nutrient loss process of nitrogen and phosphorus in slope croplands subjected to different crops and tillage measures. The characteristics of the runoff process and nutrient migration of different slope treatments were studied, which were the bare-land (BL, as the control), peanut monoculture (PL), corn monoculture (CL), bare land (upper slope) mixed with peanut monoculture (lower slope) (BP), corn and peanut intercropping (TCP), corn and soybean intercropping (TCS), downslope ridge cultivation (BS) slope, and straw-mulched (SC), respectively. The results showed that the runoff of CL, SC, TCS, BS, BP, PL and TCP slope types were 93%, 75%, 51%, 39%, 28%, 12%, and 6% of the those of the bare land, respectively. The total nitrogen concentration in runoff on different slope types decreased in the order of BP > PL > BS > SC > TCP > BL > CL > TCS. The BL was characterized with the highest NRL-TN (the loss of total nitrogen per unit area), with the value of 1.188 kg/hm2, while those of the TCP is the smallest with the value of 0.073 kg/hm2. The total phosphorus concentration in runoff decreasd in the order of BS > BP > PL > BL > TCP > SC > CL > TCS. The PRL-TP (the loss of total phosphorus per unit area) of BL is the largest (0.016 kg/hm2), while those of TCP is the smallest (0.001 kg/hm2). These indicate that the loss of nitrogen is much higer than that of phosphorus. The loss of nitrogen in runoff is dominated by nitrate nitrogen, which accounts for 54.4%–78.9% of TN. Slope croplands in the water source area should adopt the tillage measures of TCP and PL.These measures can reduce 85% of the runoff of nitrogen and phosphorus compared to the bare land. The results may assist in agricultural non-point source pollution control and help promote improved management of the water environment in the Danjiang River’s water source area.

Microorganisms have a profound impact on the stability and ecological health of aquatic environments. Fungi, as important components of river ecosystems, play critical roles as decomposers and symbionts. A comprehensive understanding of the mechanisms underlying fungal community assembly is essential for the effective conservation and management of river ecosystems. However, the distribution patterns and assembly process of fungal communities along elevation gradients in river sediments remain poorly understood. In this study, ITS amplicon sequencing, a neutral community model, and a null model were employed to analyze the distribution patterns and assembly processes of fungal communities in sediments along the altitudinal gradient of the Yellow River. The results indicated that Ascomycota (47.79%) and Basidiomycota (15.68%) were identified as the dominant phyla in the sediments, collectively accounting for 63.47% of the total relative abundance of the community. In the three different altitudinal gradients, the fungal community diversity (Shannon) showed a gradually decreasing trend with increasing altitude. The co-line networks of fungal communities exhibited positive interactions and had more complex and compact networks in the sediments of the Tibetan Plateau area (YRA). Environmental factors in the sediments played an important role in shaping the structure of fungal communities, with lead (Pb), total nitrogen (TN), silt, and total organic carbon (TOC) being the main factors driving changes in community structure, contributing 15.5%, 12.3%, 10.7%, and 10.2%, respectively. In the community assembly process, deterministic processes were found to dominate, with homogenizing selection contributing the most (69.66%). These research results help us understand the distribution patterns of fungal communities along altitudinal gradients and the mechanisms of community assembly, and also provide a scientific basis for biodiversity conservation and the rational use of biological resources.

Heavy metals (HMs), characterized by their non-biodegradable nature, are prone to enrichment in river sediments, thereby severely jeopardizing the equilibrium of ecosystems and human health. Given the critical importance of safeguarding valuable water resources, it is of utmost urgency to initiate research on HMs within the Yellow River Basin (YRB). This study collected river sediment samples from the Yellow River Basin and analyzed the distribution characteristics, health risks, and pollution sources of HMs utilizing the pollution index method, health risk assessment, and positive matrix factorization (PMF) model. The results demonstrate that arsenic (As), zinc (Zn), and cadmium (Cd) are the primary elements contributing to heavy metal (HM) pollution in the sediments of the YRB. The proportions of sediment samples with low HM pollution in the upstream, midstream, and downstream are 36.48%, 71.43%, and 72.73%, respectively, whereas the proportions of samples with moderate pollution are 63.16%, 28.57%, and 27.27%, respectively. The health risk assessment reveals that the non-carcinogenic risks posed by HM pollution in the sediments to adults are negligible, whereas those to children are not. Regarding carcinogenic risks, the carcinogenic risk index of As is significantly higher than that of the other HMs. The primary sources of HM pollution in the sediments are identified as traffic–industrial sources, agricultural–industrial sources, and industrial sources, with respective contribution rates of 32.47%, 44.87%, and 22.66%. As and Zn are prioritized as elements for health risk control, while agricultural–industrial sources are highlighted as the priority sources for pollution control.
