Sentiment and emotion, which correspond to long-term and short-lived human feelings, are closely linked to each other, leading to the fact that sentiment analysis and emotion recognition are also two interdependent tasks in natural language processing (NLP). One task often leverages the shared knowledge from another task and performs better when solved in a joint learning paradigm. Conversational context dependency, multi-modal interaction, and multi-task correlation are three key factors that contribute to this joint paradigm. However, none of the recent approaches have considered them in a unified framework. To fill this gap, we propose a multi-modal, multi-task interactive graph attention network, termed M3GAT, to simultaneously solve the three problems. At the heart of the model is a proposed interactive conversation graph layer containing three core sub-modules, which are: (1) local-global context connection for modeling both local and global conversational context, (2) cross-modal connection for learning multi-modal complementary and (3) cross-task connection for capturing the correlation across two tasks. Comprehensive experiments on three benchmarking datasets, MELD, MEISD, and MSED, show the effectiveness of M3GAT over state-of-the-art baselines with the margin of 1.88%, 5.37%, and 0.19% for sentiment analysis, and 1.99%, 3.65%, and 0.13% for emotion recognition, respectively. In addition, we also show the superiority of multi-task learning over the single-task framework.

High-dimensional data is involved in many fields of information processing. However, sometimes, the intrinsic structures of these data can be described by a few degrees of freedom. To discover these degrees of freedom or the low-dimensional nonlinear manifold underlying a high-dimensional space, many manifold learning algorithms have been proposed. Here we describe a novel algorithm, locally linear inlaying (LLI), which combines simple geometric intuitions and rigorously established optimality to compute the global embedding of a nonlinear manifold. Using a divide-and-conquer strategy, LLI gains some advantages in itself. First, its time complexity is linear in the number of data points, and hence LLI can be implemented efficiently. Second, LLI overcomes problems caused by the nonuniform sample distribution. Third, unlike existing algorithms such as isometric feature mapping (Isomap), local tangent space alignment (LTSA), and locally linear coordination (LLC), LLI is robust to noise. In addition, to evaluate the embedding results quantitatively, two criteria based on information theory and Kolmogorov complexity theory, respectively, are proposed. Furthermore, we demonstrated the efficiency and effectiveness of our proposal by synthetic and real-world data sets.

Sarcasm is a form of figurative language device to express human inner feelings, where the author writes the positive sentence on surface form, while he/she actually expresses negative sentiment, vice versa. Sentiment thus comes into sight, and is closely related with sarcasm, leading to the recent popularity of multi-modal sarcasm and sentiment joint detection in conversation (dialogue). The key challenges involve multi-modal fusion and multi-task interaction. Most of the existing studies have focused on building multi-modal fused representation, while the commonness and uniqueness across related tasks has not received attention. To fill this gap, we propose a multi-modal multi-task interaction learning framework, termed MIL, for joint detection of sarcasm and sentiment. Specifically, a cross-modal target attention mechanism is proposed to automatically learn the alignment between texts and images/speeches. In addition, a multi-modal interaction learning paradigm consisting of a dual-gating network, three separate fully-connected layers that simultaneously capture the commonness and uniqueness. Comprehensive experiments on two benchmarking datasets (i.e., Memotion and MUStARD) show the effectiveness of the proposed model over state-of-the-art baselines with a significant improvement of 1.9%, 2.4% in terms of F1.

The construction sector is widely recognized as having the most hazardous working environment among the various business sectors, and many research studies have focused on injury prevention strategies for use on construction sites. The risk-based theory emphasizes the analysis of accident causes extracted from accident reports to understand, predict, and prevent the occurrence of construction accidents. The first step in the analysis is to classify the incidents from a massive number of reports into different cause categories, a task which is usually performed on a manual basis by domain experts. The research described in this paper proposes a convolutional bidirectional long short-term memory (C-BiLSTM)-based method to automatically classify construction accident reports. The proposed approach was applied on a dataset of construction accident narratives obtained from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration website, and the results indicate that this model performs better than some of the classic machine learning models commonly used in classification tasks, including support vector machine (SVM), naïve Bayes (NB), and logistic regression (LR). The results of this study can help safety managers to develop risk management strategies.

Quantum theory has been applied in a number of fields outside physics, e.g., cognitive science and information retrieval (IR). Recently, it has been shown that quantum theory can subsume various key IR models into a single mathematical formalism of Hilbert vector spaces. While a series of quantum-inspired IR models has been proposed, limited effort has been devoted to verify the existence of the quantum-like phenomenon in real users’ information retrieval processes, from a real user study perspective. In this paper, we aim to explore and model the quantum interference in users’ relevance judgement about documents, caused by the presentation order of documents. A user study in the context of IR tasks have been carried out. The existence of the quantum interference is tested by the violation of the law of total probability and the validity of the order effect. Our main findings are: (1) there is an apparent judging discrepancy across different users and document presentation orders, and empirical data have violated the law of total probability; (2) most search trials recorded in the user study show the existence of the order effect, and the incompatible decision perspectives in the quantum question (QQ) model are valid in some trials. We further explain the judgement discrepancy in more depth, in terms of four effects (comparison, unfamiliarity, attraction and repulsion) and also analyse the dynamics of document relevance judgement in terms of the evolution of the information need subspace.

In order to support smart construction, digital twin has been a well‐recognized concept for virtually representing the physical facility. It is equally important to recognize human actions and the movement of construction equipment in virtual construction scenes. Compared to the extensive research on human action recognition (HAR) that can be applied to identify construction workers, research in the field of construction equipment action recognition (CEAR) is very limited, mainly due to the lack of available datasets with videos showing the actions of construction equipment. The contributions of this research are as follows: (1) the development of a comprehensive video dataset of 2,064 clips with five action types for excavators and dump trucks; (2) a new deep learning‐based CEAR approach (known as a simplified temporal convolutional network or STCN) that combines a convolutional neural network (CNN) with long short‐term memory (LSTM, an artificial recurrent neural network), where CNN is used to extract image features and LSTM is used to extract temporal features from video frame sequences; and (3) the comparison between this proposed new approach and a similar CEAR method and two of the best‐performing HAR approaches, namely, three‐dimensional (3D) convolutional networks (ConvNets) and two‐stream ConvNets, to evaluate the performance of STCN and investigate the possibility of directly transferring HAR approaches to the field of CEAR.
