Determining the leakage location in an underground gas pipeline is a serious technical problem. Distributed fiber optic testing technology based on Brillouin optical frequency domain analysis (BOFDA) can be used for monitoring the change in the strain and temperature of the surrounding media caused by the gas leakage. In this study, a point source leakage model was built. The distributed fiber optic strain and actively heated fiber optic were installed around the pipeline to monitor the gas pipeline leakage. Variations in the strain and temperature characteristics of the pipeline under different gas pressure conditions were found to be in the range of −392–402 μ ϵ and 3.5 °C during the 1.0 MPa gas leakage, respectively. When the soil model was loaded with a gas leakage pressure of 0.3–1.0 MPa, a significant variation in strain and temperature was noticed. The copper mesh actively heated fiber optic can effectively identify the location of the leak. Meanwhile, the heating rate of the actively heated fiber optic cables in different media environments were obtained and ranked from fast to slow: air, followed by general soil, followed by leakage soil. This led to the generation of new technology to detect the leakage location of buried gas pipelines through actively heated optical cables.

To determine the failure characteristics and evolution regularity of the floor strata during fully mechanised top-coal cave mining in typical deep and extra-thick seams in western China, the 61303 working face of an Ordos mine was selected as the engineering research object. A comprehensive monitoring method combining a BOTDR (Brillouin Optical Time-Domain Reflection) distributed fiber strain test and a borehole resistivity CT (Computerised Tomography) test was adopted. The results show that floor stress distribution of the deep-buried and extra-thick coal seam is significantly affected by the different depths of rock lithology. At the interface of the rock strata with a large difference in the elastic modulus, phenomena such as the asynchronism of strata movement and obvious differences in failure easily occur. The failure depth of the floor strata in the 61303 working face is approximately 15.90 m, and the influence depth of the floor disturbance is approximately 32.70 m. Under the influence of the mining pressure, floor stress distribution and crack evolution have obvious spatial and temporal effects. In different inclined boreholes, the data captured by the cable have different values and the fracture locations of the cable also differ. Compared with a single borehole, multiple boreholes with different inclinations, directions and locations can provide more comprehensive and reliable data trends. The knowledge obtained by this monitoring can provide reference information for the study of floor damage under similar conditions and the formulation of technical measures such as those that prevent mine water disasters.
Inter-basin water diversion projects have emerged as a critical solution to address water scarcity crises stemming from the uneven spatial distribution of water resources. The economic feasibility of these projects is significantly influenced by multiple factors, including water source composition, target beneficiaries, and the specific characteristics of diversion routes and distances. This research developed a novel multi-objective optimization framework utilizing a simulation-based optimization methodology designed to formulate efficient joint operational strategies that maximize water supply reliability while reducing operational expenditures. The practicality of this framework is validated through its implementation in the Yangtze to Huaihe River Water Diversion Project (YHWDP) in China. The results revealed that the proposed joint operation rules achieve substantial improvements in both water supply efficiency and cost-effectiveness. Specifically, the model demonstrated the capability to maintain a 95.5% water supply rate while reducing the water pumping volume to only 1.84 × 109 m3. Furthermore, comparative analyses with conventional operation rules showed that the joint operation strategy effectively utilized the runoff regulation capacity of lakes while significantly mitigating water level fluctuations. During the water diversion period, the average variance of the time series of water volume in three lakes decreased by 54.5%, thereby contributing to the preservation of ecological stability for lake flora and fauna. The findings of this research not only provided practical insights for optimizing the operational performance of the YHWDP but also established a valuable framework for developing joint operation strategies in similar long-distance water diversion projects between basins.
