This paper presents an overview of the maximum power point tracking (MPPT) methods for photovoltaic (PV) systems used in the Micro Grids of PV systems. In the PV system, the output varies nonlinearly with temperature and radiation, and the point at which power is maximized appears accordingly. The MPPT of the PV system can improve output by about 25%, and it is very important to operate at this point at all times. Various methods of tracking the MPP of the PV system have been studied and proposed. In this paper, we discuss commonly used methods for the MPPT of PV systems, methods using artificial intelligence control, and mixed methods, and present the characteristics, advantages, and disadvantages of each method.

This paper proposes the method for maximum power point tracking (MPPT) of the photovoltaic (PV) system. The conventional PI controller controls the system with fixed gains. Conventional PI controllers with fixed gains cannot satisfy both transient and steady-state. Therefore, to overcome the shortcomings of conventional PI controllers, this paper presents the variable gain proportional integral (VGPI) controllers that control the gain value of PI controllers using fuzzy control. Inputs of fuzzy control used in the VGPI controller are the slope from the voltage-power characteristics of the PV module. This paper designs fuzzy control’s membership functions and rule bases using the characteristics that the slope decreases in size, as it approaches the maximum power point and increases as it gets farther. In addition, the gain of the PI controller is adjusted to increase in transient-state and decrease in steady-state in order to improve the error in steady-state and the tracking speed of maximum power point of the PV system. The performance of the VGPI controller has experimented in cases where the solar radiation is constant and the solar radiation varies, to compare with the performance of the P&O method, which is traditionally used most often in MPPT, and the performance of the PI controller, which is used most commonly in the industry field. Finally, the results from the experiment are presented and the results are analyzed.

This paper presents an optimal design of a fuzzy control rule base for tracking the maximum power point of a photovoltaic (PV) system. Fuzzy control is used for the maximum power point tracking (MPPT) of PV systems because it has the advantage of processing nonlinear systems. The rule base of fuzzy control depends on the user or designer’s experience and determines the fuzzy control’s performance. In this paper, we divide the MPPT state of the PV system into four cases according to the operating conditions, and propose the rule base design of the fuzzy control according to each case. The proposed method in the paper tests the MPPT performance using artificial lighting and compares the results with the conventional control method (proportional and integral (PI) and perturbation & observation (P&O) method) to prove its effectiveness.

This paper proposes a control method to improve the energy efficiency and performance of cooling fans used for cooling. In Industry 4.0, a large number of digital data are used, and a large number of data centers are created to handle these data. These data centers consist of information technology (IT) equipment, power systems, and cooling systems. The cooling system is essential to prevent failure and malfunction of the IT equipment, which consumes a considerable amount of energy. This paper proposes a method to reduce the energy used in such cooling systems and to improve the temperature control performance. This paper proposes an fuzzy proportional integral(FPI) controller that controls the input value of the proportional integral(PI) controller by the fuzzy controller according to the operation state, a VFPI (Variable Fuzzy Proportional Integral) controller that adjusts the gain value of the fuzzy controller, and a variable fuzzy proportion integration-variable limit (VFPI-VL) controller that adjusts the limit value of the fuzzy controller’s output value. These controllers control the fan applied to the cooling system and compare the energy consumed and temperature control performance. When the PI controller consumes 100% of the power consumed, the FPI is 50.5%, the VFPI controller is 44.3%, and the VFPI-VL is 32.6%. The power consumption is greatly reduced. In addition, the VFPI-VL controller is the lowest in temperature variation, which improves the energy efficiency and performance of the cooling system using a fan. The methods presented in this paper can not only be applied to fans for cooling, but also to variable speed systems for various purposes and improvement of performance and efficiency can be expected.

This paper proposes the series connected fuzzy-proportional integral (SF-PI) controller, which is composed of the fuzzy control and the PI controller to improve temperature control performance of dehumidifier using a thermoelectric element. The control of conventional PI controller usually uses fixed gain. For that reason, it is limited in achieving satisfactory control performance in both transient-state and steady-state. The fuzzy control within SF-PI controller adjusts the input value of PI controller according to operating condition. The PI controller within the SF-PI controller controls the temperature of the thermoelectric element using that value. The SF-PI controller can achieve more accurate temperature control than a conventional PI controller for that reason. The SF-PI controller has been tested for various indoor environmental conditions such as temperature and relative humidity conditions. The average temperature error of the SF-PI controller between the reference temperature and the thermoelectric element temperature is 22% of traditional PI’s value and consumption power is reduced by about 10%. Therefore, the SF-PI controller proposed in this paper can improved the performance of temperature control of dehumidifier using thermoelectric element. The power consumed by buildings accounts for a significant portion of the total power consumption, of which the air conditioner represents the largest energy consumer. In this paper, it is possible to reduce the energy consumption by improving the performance of the dehumidifier, one of the air conditioners, and it can be applied to various control fields in the future.

This paper proposes a method to detect disconnection faults and their exact location in PV systems. The proposed method injects multiple frequencies into a PV system with a transmitter and detects the injected signal using a receiver. The signal detected by the receiver exhibits different frequency characteristics on a disconnection failure. Based on this characteristic, a disconnection failure can be detected. In addition, by detecting the frequency radiated through the disconnection point, the exact disconnection point can be detected.
