Context: The inclusion of grey literature (GL) is important to remove publication bias while gathering available evidence regarding a certain topic. The number of systematic literature reviews (SLRs) in Software Engineering (SE) is increasing but we do not know about the extent of GL usage in these SLRs. Moreover, Google Scholar is rapidly becoming a search engine of choice for many researchers but the extent to which it can find the primary studies is not known. Objective: This tertiary study is an attempt to i) measure the usage of GL in SLRs in SE. Furthermore this study proposes strategies for categorizing GL and a quality checklist to use for GL in future SLRs; ii) explore if it is feasible to use only Google Scholar for finding scholarly articles for academic research. Method: We have conducted a systematic mapping study to measure the extent of GL usage in SE SLRs as well as to measure the feasibility of finding primary studies using Google Scholar. Results and conclusions: a) Grey Literature: 76.09% SLRs (105 out of 138) in SE have included one or more GL studies as primary studies. Among total primary studies across all SLRs (6307), 582 are classified as GL, making the frequency of GL citing as 9.23%. The intensity of GL use indicate that each SLR contains 5 primary studies on average (total intensity of GL use being 5.54). The ranking of GL tells us that conference papers are the most used form 43.3% followed by technical reports 28.52%. Universities, research institutes, labs and scientific societies together make up 67.7% of GL used, indicating that these are useful sources for searching GL. We additionally propose strategies for categorizing GL and criteria for evaluating GL quality, which can become a basis for more detailed guidelines for including GL in future SLRs. b) Google Scholar Results: The results show that Google Scholar was able to retrieve 96% of primary studies of these SLRs. Most of the primary studies that were not found using Google Scholar were from grey sources.

The k-means algorithm is sensitive to the outliers. In this paper, we propose a robust two-stage k-means clustering algorithm based on the observation point mechanism, which can accurately discover the cluster centers without the disturbance of outliers. In the first stage, a small subset of the original data set is selected based on a set of nondegenerate observation points. The subset is a good representation of the original data set because it only contains all those points that have a higher density of the original data set and does not include the outliers. In the second stage, we use the k-means clustering algorithm to cluster the selected subset and find the proper cluster centers as the true cluster centers of the original data set. Based on these cluster centers, the rest data points of the original data set are assigned to the clusters whose centers are the closest to the data points. The theoretical analysis and experimental results show that the proposed clustering algorithm has the lower computational complexity and better robustness in comparison with k-means clustering algorithm, thus demonstrating the feasibility and effectiveness of our proposed clustering algorithm.

The performance of the UAVs while executing various mission profiles greatly depends on the selection of planning algorithms. Reinforcement learning (RL) algorithms can effectively be utilized for robot path planning. Due to random action selection in case of action ties, the traditional Q-learning algorithm and its other variants face the issues of slow convergence and suboptimal path planning in high-dimensional navigational environments. To solve these problems, we propose an improved deep Q-network (DQN), incorporating an efficient tie-breaking mechanism, prioritized experience replay (PER), and L2-regularization. The adopted tie-breaking mechanism improves the action selection and ultimately helps in generating an optimal trajectory for the UAV in a 3D cluttered environment. To improve the convergence speed of the traditional Q-algorithm, prioritized experience replay is used, which learns from experiences with high temporal difference (TD) error and avoids uniform sampling of stored transitions during training. This also allows the prioritization of high-reward experiences (e.g., reaching a goal), which helps the agent to rediscover these valuable states and improve learning. Moreover, L2-regularization is adopted that encourages smaller weights for more stable and smoother Q-values to reduce the erratic action selections and promote smoother UAV flight paths. Finally, the performance of the proposed method is presented and thoroughly compared against the traditional DQN, demonstrating its superior effectiveness.

The rapid growth of digital content in Urdu has created an urgent need for effective automatic text summarization (ATS) systems. While extractive methods have been widely studied, abstractive summarization for Urdu remains largely unexplored due to the language’s complex morphology and rich literary tradition. This paper systematically evaluates four transformer-based language models (BERT-Urdu, BART, mT5, and GPT-2) for Urdu abstractive summarization, comparing their performance against conventional machine learning and deep learning approaches. Using multiple Urdu datasets—including the Urdu Summarization Corpus, Fake News Dataset, and Urdu-Instruct-News—we show that fine-tuned Transformer Language Models (TLMs) consistently outperform traditional methods, with the multilingual mT5 model achieving a 0.42 absolute improvement in F1-score over the best baseline. Our analysis reveals that mT5’s architecture is particularly effective at handling Urdu-specific challenges such as right-to-left script processing, diacritic interpretation, and complex verb–noun compounding. Furthermore, we present empirically validated hyperparameter configurations and training strategies for Urdu ATS, establishing transformer-based approaches as the new state-of-the-art for Urdu summarization. Notably, mT5 outperforms Seq2Seq baselines by up to 20% in ROUGE-L, underscoring the efficacy of Transformer-based models for low-resource languages. This work contributes both a systematic review of prior research and a novel empirical benchmark for advancing Urdu abstractive summarization.
