We present a novel theory of gravity by considering an extension of symmetric teleparallel gravity. This is done by introducing, in the framework of the metric-affine formalism, a new class of theories where the nonmetricity Q is nonminimally coupled to the matter Lagrangian. More specifically, we consider a Lagrangian of the form L∼f1(Q)+f2(Q)LM, where f1 and f2 are generic functions of Q, and LM is the matter Lagrangian. This nonminimal coupling entails the nonconservation of the energy-momentum tensor, and consequently the appearance of an extra force. The formulation of the gravity sector in terms of the Q instead of the curvature may result in subtle improvements of the theory. In the context of nonminimal matter couplings, we are therefore motivated to explore whether the new geometrical formulation in terms of the Q, when implemented also in the matter sector, would allow more universally consistent and viable realizations of the nonminimal coupling. Furthermore, we consider several cosmological applications by presenting the evolution equations and imposing specific functional forms of the functions f1(Q) and f2(Q), such as power-law and exponential dependencies of the nonminimal couplings. Cosmological solutions are considered in two general classes of models, and found to feature accelerating expansion at late times.

A fundamental ingredient in wormhole physics is the flaring-out condition at the throat which, in classical general relativity, entails the violation of the null energy condition. In this work, we present the most general conditions in the context of modified gravity, in which the matter threading the wormhole throat satisfies all of the energy conditions, and it is the higher order curvature terms, which may be interpreted as a gravitational fluid, that support these nonstandard wormhole geometries. Thus, we explicitly show that wormhole geometries can be theoretically constructed without the presence of exotic matter but are sustained in the context of modified gravity.

Modified gravity theories with geometry-matter coupling, in which the action is an arbitrary function of the Ricci scalar and the matter Lagrangian [f(R,Lm) gravity], and of the Ricci scalar and of the trace of the matter energy-momentum tensor [f(R,T) gravity], respectively, have the intriguing property that the divergence of the matter energy-momentum tensor is nonzero. In the present paper, by using the formalism of open thermodynamic systems, we interpret the generalized conservation equations in these gravitational theories from a thermodynamic point of view as describing irreversible matter creation processes, which could be validated by fundamental particle physics. Thus particle creation corresponds to an irreversible energy flow from the gravitational field to the created matter constituents, with the second law of thermodynamics requiring that space-time transforms into matter. The equivalent particle number creation rates, the creation pressure and the entropy production rates are obtained for both f(R,Lm) and f(R,T) gravity theories. The temperature evolution laws of the newly created particles are also obtained. In the case of the f(R,T) gravity theory the open irreversible thermodynamic interpretation of a simple cosmological model is presented in detail. It is also shown that due to the geometry-matter coupling, during the cosmological evolution a large amount of comoving entropy could be produced.

In this work, we review a plethora of modified theories of gravity with generalized curvature-matter couplings. The explicit nonminimal couplings, for instance, between an arbitrary function of the scalar curvature R and the Lagrangian density of matter, induces a non-vanishing covariant derivative of the energy-momentum tensor, implying non-geodesic motion and, consequently, leads to the appearance of an extra force. Applied to the cosmological context, these curvature-matter couplings lead to interesting phenomenology, where one can obtain a unified description of the cosmological epochs. We also consider the possibility that the behavior of the galactic flat rotation curves can be explained in the framework of the curvature-matter coupling models, where the extra terms in the gravitational field equations modify the equations of motion of test particles and induce a supplementary gravitational interaction. In addition to this, these models are extremely useful for describing dark energy-dark matter interactions and for explaining the late-time cosmic acceleration.

We consider a gravitational theory in which matter is nonminimally coupled to geometry, with the effective Lagrangian of the gravitational field being given by an arbitrary function of the Ricci scalar, the trace of the matter energy-momentum tensor, and the contraction of the Ricci tensor with the matter energy-momentum tensor. The field equations of the theory are obtained in the metric formalism, and the equation of motion of a massive test particle is derived. In this type of theory the matter energy-momentum tensor is generally not conserved, and this nonconservation determines the appearance of an extra force acting on the particles in motion in the gravitational field. It is interesting to note that in the present gravitational theory, the extra force explicitly depends on the Ricci tensor, which entails a relevant deviation from the geodesic motion, especially for strong gravitational fields, thus rendering the possibility of a space-time curvature enhancement by the ${R}_{$\mu${}$\nu${}}{T}^{$\mu${}$\nu${}}$ coupling. The Newtonian limit of the theory is also considered, and an explicit expression for the extra acceleration that depends on the matter density is obtained in the small velocity limit for dust particles. We also analyze in detail the so-called Dolgov-Kawasaki instability and obtain the stability conditions of the theory with respect to local perturbations. A particular class of gravitational field equations can be obtained by imposing the conservation of the energy-momentum tensor. We derive the corresponding field equations for the conservative case by using a Lagrange multiplier method, from a gravitational action that explicitly contains an independent parameter multiplying the divergence of the energy-momentum tensor. The cosmological implications of the theory are investigated in detail for both the conservative and the nonconservative cases, and several classes of exact analytical and approximate solutions are obtained.
