In this letter, we investigate the robust and secure beamforming (RSBF) in an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) aided millimeter wave (mmWave) multiple input single output (MISO) system, where multiple single antenna eavesdroppers (Eves) are arbitrarily distributed nearby the legitimate receiver (Bob). Considering the channel state information (CSI) of cascaded wiretap channels is imperfectly known at the legitimate transmitter (Alice), the RSBF design problems to maximize the worst case of achievable secrecy rate (ASR) are formulated under the total transmission power and unit-modulus constraints. Since the problems are difficult to solve optimally due to their non-convexity and coupled variables, we substitute the wiretap channels by a weighted combination of discrete samples and propose a RSBF scheme based on alternating optimization and semidefinite relaxation (SDR) techniques, for both colluding and noncolluding eavesdropping scenarios. Simulation results show that the proposed RSBF scheme can effectively improve the ASR and also outperforms other benchmark schemes.

In this letter, we develop a new framework to jointly characterize covertness and timeliness of short-packet communications, in which a new metric named covert age of information (CAoI) is first proposed and then a closed-form expression for the average CAoI is derived. Our examination explicitly reveals the tradeoff between communication covertness and timeliness affected by the block-length, transmit power and prior transmission probability. Multiple transmission designs are tackled in order to minimize the average CAoI subject to covertness constraint, where the resultant differences relative to the designs with traditional metrics (e.g., effective covert rate, AoI) as objective functions are clarified. Our examination demonstrates that the optimal block-length is not the largest one, which is optimal in delay-constrained covert communication without considering the communication timeliness, and the optimal prior transmission probability may not be 1/2, which has been widely assumed in the literature of covert communications.
In this article, we investigate covert millimeter-wave (mmWave) communications with finite blocklength, where a multiantenna transmitter sends covert messages to a legitimate receiver in the presence of spatially random wardens. Both the phase array (PA) and linear frequency diverse array (LFDA) beamforming schemes, which are designed to maximize the antenna gain from the transmitter to the legitimate receiver, are investigated to improve the covert communication performance. First, the novel expressions of covert communication constraint and average effective covert throughput (AECT) are derived for both beamforming schemes. Then, taking into account the constraint of maximal available blocklength, the optimal transmit power and blocklength are determined for maximizing the AECT. Typically, comparing to the benchmark with fixed blocklength, the enhancement of AECT by utilizing the optimized blocklength enlarges as the density of wardens increases. In addition, it is observed that increasing the maximal available blocklength cannot always improve the maximum AECT due to the tradeoff between the transmit power and blocklength. Furthermore, it is shown that the maximum AECT varies for different directions of the legitimate receiver under both the beamforming schemes, and the transmitter can adaptively choose the PA or LFDA beamforming scheme to improve the covertness performance against spatially random wardens.

In this work, we aim to maximize the timeliness of data collection subject to a covertness constraint in unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-aided Internet of Things (IoT) networks, where a UAV periodically conducts wireless power transfer (WPT) to charge an energy-constrained IoT device and then the IoT device opportunistically sends its collected data to the UAV. To this end, we first derive a lower bound on the covertness constraint and an analytical expression for Age of Information (AoI) to characterize timeliness. Then, we jointly optimize the UAV’s transmit power for WPT, the WPT duration, and the data transmission duration by considering two practical scenarios. For the fixed total duration scenario, our analytical optimal solutions indicate that the total harvested energy at the IoT device is independent of the covertness constraint, although both the UAV’s transmit power and the WPT duration are significantly affected by the covertness constraint. With the optimized total duration scenario, we prove that the UAV’s optimal transmit power is always attained at its maximum value regardless of the existence of the covertness constraint, but the WPT and data transmission durations are sensitive to the required covertness. Overall, there exists a nontrivial tradeoff between the timeliness and covertness for data collection in the considered system, which is determined by the WPT design. Furthermore, our numerical results show that the optimal prior probability of the IoT device’s opportunistic transmission is generally not 0.5 for the fixed total duration, but it is indeed 0.5 for the optimized total duration.

This paper investigates covert communications with finite blocklength in the presence of multiple randomly distributed wardens, which are modeled as a Poisson point process (PPP). Specifically, the protection area, which is guarded by the transmitter against the wardens, is introduced in order to enhance the covert communication performance. First, the closed-form expressions of covert communication constraint are derived under both the non-colluding and colluding detection strategies over the channels suffering both path-loss and small scaling fading. Then, considering the constraint of maximum available blocklength, the transmit power and the blocklength are jointly optimized to maximize the average effective covert throughput (AECT). Differing from the existing literature with only one warden, it is demonstrated that the increasing of maximum available blocklength causes the improvement of maximum AECT only when the density of warden is small. In addition, our examinations show that the expansion of the protection area indeed improves the maximum AECT, and the improvement under the non-colluding detection strategy is more significant than that under the colluding detection strategy.

In this letter, we investigate covert communications in uplink non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) systems, where a covert user tries to transmit private information to a legitimate receiver without being detected by a warden. Specifically, the covert user is shielded by a public user with truncated channel inversion power control, which works as a random transmit power jammer to interfere the warden’s detection. To this end, we derive the closed-form expressions of the detection error probability and optimal detection threshold at the warden. Furthermore, we present the optimal choice of the power control parameter to achieve the maximum effective covert throughput (ECT). Our analysis and numerical results indicate that boosting the maximum transmit power of public user both increases the covertness and prior transmission probability, which leads to a larger ECT.
