Dr T. ten Hagen is an associate professor of Experimental Oncology and head of the Laboratory Experimental Oncology since 2005. After an MSc (medical microbiology - Utrecht University) and an MSc (applied immunology - Centers for Disease Control and Emory University), he did a PhD at Erasmus MC (Rotterdam). During his PhD he collaborated with, and later joined, the Department of Surgery, where in 1995 he established the Laboratory for Experimental Surgical Oncology. In 2019 he established his lab within the department of Pathology to further his work on tumor pathophysiology, where he and his group are performing research on nano-carrrier based drug delivery using smart drug delivery systems (SDDS), as well as cancer cell biology. These research areas are intending to establish a predictive model for optimal therapy. He also studies trafficking of liposomally delivered drugs steered and controlled through smart drug delivery devices, including localized hyperthermia, by high and super resolution imaging. Lastly, he has recently used immune-active SDDS (iSDDS) for in situ vaccination to combat cancer.
