The strength and deformation of rock masses transected by persistent joints are controlled by the fracture network. In this work, bonded particle model modeled by particle flow code in three dimensions was used to study the effect of geometry parameters on the strength and behavior of jointed rock masses under uniaxial compression. The effect of the number of crossed joint sets, joint orientation, and joint spacing on the uniaxial compressive strength was investigated, and this article presents the results of the numerical simulations. Rigorous validation process had done before the numerical experiments. Four types of blocks (Series A, B, C, and D) with different numbers of joint sets were considered in this article. Then, a sensitivity study is undertaken to investigate the effects of joint set numbers and joint geometry configuration on the failure mode, unconfined compressive strength, and Young’s modulus of jointed rock mass. The interaction among the crossed joint sets was found to have marked effects on the mechanical properties and failure modes. A study about the effects of joint spacing on the failure modes, unconfined compressive strength, and Young’s modulus was also conducted. Joint spacing was found to have no significant effect on the failure modes of jointed rock masses in a certain range. It is also shown that the range and variance of unconfined compressive strength are affected principally by joint set numbers and decreased slightly with the decrease in joint spacing. The effect of crossed joint sets on the stress field was carried out. Stress concentration was found to be the reason for relatively lower strength of blocks with crossed joint sets compared to the block with the same weakest single joint set. The result in this article is of great help to reveal the mechanism of damage and fracture of jointed rocks under uniaxial compression.

Predicting overbreak blocks is a valid way to protect constructors, safeties in the process of tunnel excavation. In this paper, a prediction method of the overbreak blocks in tunnels is developed in the frame of the wavelet neural network of geological statistics models. Geometrical parameters of structural plane are first obtained by field survey. Then, a statistical model can be deduced from the measured geometrical parameters on the basis of the geological statistics theory. Furthermore, the volumes and distribution of the overbreak blocks are calculated by the theory of wavelet neural network. Finally, the valid support measurements can be designed according to the prediction results for all overbreak blocks appeared in tunnel excavation, and the amount of overbreak blocks can also be predicted. The code with respect to the method has been developed by the fortran language. The method proposed in this paper has been used in a tunnel construction. The results show that there exists an approximate 10%~30% difference between the prediction and the real volume of overbreak blocks. Therefore, the method can be well used to predict the volumes distribution and the overbreak blocks, and the accordingly support measurements can be also given according to the prediction results.
Soil‐rock mixture (SRM) is a special geological material that has the unique properties of rock or soil. Studies on the strength characteristics of the SRM have very important theoretical significance and practical value. In this study, the gravel proportions, gravel sizes, gravel shapes, and repetitive results of shear experiments are considered in laboratory experiments and for the identification of strength parameters. To the gravel shapes, from the angle of the composition materials of SRM, the experimental samples include samples with breccia gravels and with subrounded gravels. And, in this study, the laboratory model experiment is used to research the strength characteristics of SRM. In addition, the shear failure mechanism is used to establish the relationship between the microfailure mechanism and the macrostrength parameters identification. Taking gravel proportion, gravel size, gravel shape, and repetitive shear process as the influencing factors of the SRM, the laboratory models have been remolded, and laboratory direct shear experiments have been carried out. The shear deformation laws of the SRM are researched on the basis of the analysis of the curves of shear stress and the horizontal displacement.
