Autonomous exploration is crucial and highly challenging for various intelligent operations of unmanned aerial vehicles. However, low-efficiency problems caused by low-quality trajectory or back-and-forth maneuvers (BFMs) still exist. To improve the exploration efficiency in unknown environments, a fast autonomous exploration planner is proposed in this article. We first design a novel frontier exploration sequence generation method to significantly reduce BFM during the exploration by considering multilevel factors in an asymmetric traveling salesman problem. Then, according to the exploration sequence and the distribution of frontiers, an adaptive yaw planning method is proposed to cover more frontiers by yaw change during an exploration journey. In addition, to increase the fluency of flight, a dynamic replanning strategy is also adopted. The main technical contributions of the proposed approach are to provide a comprehensive global coverage path with less BFM and use adaptive yaw planning to generate more reasonable yaw trajectory. We present extensive comparison and real-world experiments to validate the effectiveness and correctness of our method. Experimental results show that the proposed approach has better performance compared to typical and state-of-the-art methods in these flat scenarios without lots of scattered obstacles.

Registration is a basic yet crucial task in point cloud processing. In correspondence-based point cloud registration, matching correspondences by point feature techniques may lead to an extremely high outlier (false correspondence) ratio. Current outlier removal methods still suffer from low efficiency, accuracy, and recall rate. We use an intuitive method to describe the 6-DOF (degree of freedom) curtailment process in point cloud registration and propose an outlier removal strategy based on the reliability of the correspondence graph. The method constructs the corresponding graph according to the given correspondences and designs the concept of the reliability degree of the graph node for optimal candidate selection and the reliability degree of the graph edge to obtain the global maximum consensus set. The presented method achieves fast and accurate outliers removal along with gradual aligning parameters estimation. Extensive experiments on simulations and challenging real-world datasets demonstrate that the proposed method can still perform effective point cloud registration even the correspondence outlier ratio is over 99%, and the efficiency is better than the state-of-the-art. Path planning is one of the key parts of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) fast autonomous flight in an unknown cluttered environment. However, real-time and stability remain a significant challenge in the field of path planning. To improve the robustness and efficiency of the path planning method in complex environments, this paper presents RETRBG, a robust and efficient trajectory replanning method based on the guiding path. Firstly, a safe guiding path is generated by using an improved A* and path pruning method, which is used to perceive the narrow space in its surrounding environment. Secondly, under the guidance of the path, a guided kinodynamic path searching method (GKPS) is devised to generate a safe, kinodynamically feasible and minimum-time initial path. Finally, an adaptive optimization function with two modes is proposed to improve the optimization quality in complex environments, which selects the optimization mode to optimize the smoothness and safety of the path according to the perception results of the guiding path. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method achieved good performance both in different obstacle densities and different resolutions. Compared with the other state-of-the-art methods, the quality and success rate of the planning result are significantly improved.

LiDAR is a crucial sensor for 3D environment perception. However, limited by the field of view of the LiDAR, it is sometimes difficult to achieve complete coverage of the environment with a single LiDAR. In this paper, we designed a spinning actuated LiDAR mapping system that is compatible with both UAV and backpack platforms and propose a tightly coupled laser–inertial SLAM algorithm for it. In our algorithm, edge and plane features in the point cloud are first extracted. Then, for the significant changes in the distribution of point cloud features between two adjacent scans caused by the continuous rotation of the LiDAR, we employed an adaptive scan accumulation method to improve the stability and accuracy of point cloud registration. After feature matching, the LiDAR feature factors and IMU pre-integration factor are added to the factor graph and jointly optimized to output the trajectory. In addition, an improved loop closure detection algorithm based on the Cartographer algorithm is used to reduce the drift. We conducted exhaustive experiments to evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm in complex indoor and outdoor scenarios. The results showed that our algorithm is more accurate than the state-of-the-art algorithms LIO-SAM and FAST-LIO2 for the spinning actuated LiDAR system, and it can achieve real-time performance.

3D laser simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) technology is one of the most efficient methods to capture spatial information. However, the low-precision of 3D laser SLAM point cloud limits its application in many fields. In order to improve the precision of 3D laser SLAM point cloud, we presented an offline coarse-to-fine precision optimization algorithm. The point clouds are first segmented and registered at the local level. Then, a pose graph of point cloud segments is constructed using feature similarity and global registration. At last, all segments are aligned and merged into the final optimized result. In addition, a cycle based error edge elimination method is utilized to guarantee the consistency of the pose graph. The experimental results demonstrated that our algorithm achieved good performance both in our test datasets and the Cartographer public dataset. Compared with the reference data obtained by terrestrial laser scanning (TLS), the average point-to-point distance root mean square errors (RMSE) of point clouds generated by Google’s Cartographer and LOAM laser SLAM algorithms are reduced by 47.3% and 53.4% respectively after optimization in our datasets. And the average plane-to-plane distances of them are reduced by 50.9% and 52.1% respectively.

Marker-based optical motion capture (MoCap) systems are widely used to provide ground truth (GT) trajectories for benchmarking SLAM algorithms. However, the accuracy of MoCap-based GT trajectories is mainly affected by two factors: spatiotemporal calibration errors between the MoCap system and the device under test (DUT), and inherent MoCap jitter. Consequently, existing benchmarks focus primarily on absolute translation error, as accurate assessment of rotation and inter-frame errors remains challenging, hindering thorough SLAM evaluation. This letter proposes MoCap2GT, a joint optimization approach that integrates MoCap data and inertial measurement unit (IMU) measurements from the DUT for generating high-precision GT trajectories. MoCap2GT includes a robust state initializer to ensure global convergence, introduces a higher-order B-spline pose parameterization on the $SE(3)$ manifold with a varying time offset to effectively model MoCap factors, and employs a degeneracy-aware measurement rejection strategy to enhance estimation accuracy. Experimental results demonstrate that MoCap2GT outperforms existing methods and significantly contributes to precise SLAM benchmarking.
