Practices show that hydraulic supports crushing accidents or roadway supports failure often take place when a longwall face advances toward an abandoned roadway or a predriven equipment recovery room. Therefore, a 2D similar simulation experiment is conducted to reveal the loading mechanism. The result shows that when the workface advances close to roadways, the main roof breaks ahead of the workface and leads to instability of higher strata. These two changes induce a sharp increase of the load on supports and lead to an accident. Thus, more attention should be paid to the advanced fracture. Therefore, mechanical analysis is used to explain the advanced fracture. Results show that the failure of coal pillar being excavated induces a sharp increase in the main roof’s hanging length. Once the hanging length reaches the limit, the advanced fracture takes place. Therefore, the stability of the coal pillar and the hanging length of roof strata are two key factors that may induce an accident. To prevent the a similar supports crushing accident, the partial backfilled technology which partly backfills the abandoned roadway in height and length to maintain the stability of the coal pillar is put forward and put into practice. The field test shows a good effect.

Based on the occurrence conditions of a thick and hard main roof and wedge-structure immediate roof in the Zhuxianzhuang Coal Mine, the fracture characteristics and instability migration law of a thick and hard roof (THR) were examined via physical simulations. Mining zones were divided with respect to the strata behaviors and roof control difficulty levels, and the principles and methods of zonal control under THR were put forward. This study proposed a coordinated control strategy of using confined blasting in water-filled deep holes, and reasonable support optimization, which could effectively reduce the roof fracture size, increases the supporting intensity and eliminate roof-control disasters. The length of confined blasting blocks and supporting intensity were calculated using a mechanical model for roof control in the strong strata behavior zone and less-strong strata behavior zone. These key parameters were determined as 20–25 m and 1.15–1.28 MPa, respectively, and the mining strategy was successfully applied in working face 880, performing high security and reasonable economical efficiency.

This study aimed to explore the safe and efficient top‐coal caving mining under thin topsoil of shallow coal seam (SCS) and realize the optimization of hydraulic support. Numerical simulation and theoretical analysis were used to reveal the stress distribution of the topsoil, the structure characteristics of the main roof blocks, and the development of the roof subsidence convergence. Step subsidence of the initial fractured main roof after sliding destabilization frequently existed, which seriously threatened the safety of the hydraulic supports. Hence, a mechanical model of the main roof blocks, where the topsoil thickness was less than the minimum height of the unloading arch, was established, and the mechanical criterion of the stability was achieved. The working resistance of the hydraulic support was calculated, and the reasonable type was optimized so as to avoid crushing accident. Findings of the present analysis indicated that the hydraulic support optimization was mainly affected by fractured main roof blocks during the first weighting. According to the block stability mechanical model based on Mohr–Coulomb criterion, the required working resistance and the supporting intensity were determined as 4899 kN and 0.58 MPa, respectively. The ZZF5200/19/32S low‐position top‐coal caving hydraulic support was selected for the studied mine and support‐surrounding rock stability control of thin‐topsoil SCS could be achieved without crushing accident.

Accurate perception of the key stratum instability can improve the safety of coal mining and also provide a basis for alleviating overlying rock strata destruction and environmental disturbance. To efficiently evaluate the instability of the key stratum and its threat to safe mining and environmental protection, the fracture characteristics and weakening mechanisms were studied through physical simulation, theoretical analysis, and field measurement. A scheme and the parameters of confined blasting in water‐filled deep hole presplit technology (CBWDHPT) for thick and hard roof (THR) weakening were proposed. Research studies showed that, after the THR fractured into large blocks, the subsequent sliding instability induced serious support‐crushing accidents; however, increasing the support strength could only provide limited control. Confined water and infiltrated modified rock mass functioned as the transfer load medium of the explosives, and the CBWDHPT fully utilized high explosion energy to break rocks. Consequently, the collapse and filling of the immediate roof and low‐positioned THR, as well as the timely cutting off the middle‐positioned THR, could be realized, which alleviated the migration space of THR blocks, overlying strata destruction, and earth‐surface step subsidence. Finally, the environmentally friendly strategy (including the CBWDHPT and hydraulic support optimization) for overlying rock strata protection was proposed. In the industrial test, the THR was broken into blocks of different sizes after utilizing the CBWDHPT, and the support working resistance was significantly decreased. It was concluded that the environmentally friendly strategy could effectively reduce the risk of overlying rock strata destruction.

The severe deformation and failure of reused roadways due to repeated mining disturbances pose considerable challenges to roadway maintenance. In this study, field measurements were taken at the 13092 reused roadway of Zhaozhuang Coal Mine to determine the deformation characteristics of its surrounding rock. Based on the equation for the plastic zone boundary of a circular roadway under a non-uniform stress field, the distribution characteristics of the plastic zone of the reused roadway under different stress conditions were analyzed, and their associated risk levels were assessed. Furthermore, the distribution characteristics of the plastic zone at different locations under primary and secondary mining, the non-uniform evolution of the mining-induced stress field, and the deformation behavior of the surrounding rock under repeated mining disturbances were investigated using FLAC3D 7.0 numerical simulations. The following conclusions were reached: Repeated mining is the primary cause of severe deformation and instability of the surrounding rock in the reused roadway, and there are marked spatial differences in severe deformation between different locations. Under a non-uniform stress field, the distribution of the plastic zone in the surrounding rock varies markedly with the ratio of the maximum principal stress to the minimum principal stress (λ). Specifically, as the ratio λ grows, the shape of the plastic zone evolves from circular to elliptical and ultimately to a butterfly shape. Once the plastic zone becomes butterfly-shaped, further increases in λ cause rapid expansion of the plastic zone. Under repeated mining disturbances, the plastic zone of the surrounding rock can be regarded as a superposition of plastic zones induced by multiple mining activities. The stress distribution of the surrounding rock is markedly different at different locations. The ratio λ, which is the dominant factor responsible for the distinct deformation and failure modes observed in different regions, also varies spatially. Based on these findings, a grouting reinforcement control technique was proposed. The grouting timing, grouting pressure, and grouting radius were determined to formulate a practical grouting control scheme for field application. Field tests demonstrate that the proposed grouting control method effectively covers the deformation range of the surrounding rock and achieves satisfactory control performance. The results of this study are expected to provide a valuable reference for grouting reinforcement control in similar mining scenarios.
