Biography

Cristina Rodriguez Sinovas holds a Ph.D. in Pharmacy from the University of Barcelona (1998) and has more than 20 years of experience in the field of vascular biology and atherosclerosis. Her research aims to establish the molecular mechanisms underlying the initiation, progression and complication of vascular pathologies characterized by an important inflammatory component and an exacerbated extracellular matrix remodelling, such as ischemic heart disease, abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) and atherosclerosis, and thus to identify novel strategies for diagnosis and therapy. Her group develops interdisciplinary research that combines basic and translational approaches. The main current research line of Dr. Rodriguez is focused on the contribution of elastogenic proteins such as lysyl oxidase (LOX) and Fibulin-5 (FBLN5), and nuclear receptors (NR4A3) to cardiovascular diseases and their interest as therapeutic targets. Dr. Rodríguez has made notable contributions to this field; specifically, her group has characterized the involvement of these proteins in the control of endothelial homeostasis, neointimal thickening, adipose tissue dysfunction in obesity, vascular stiffness and oxidative stress, cardiac hypertrophy, AAA development and vascular calcification.
