Editorial on the Research Topic Entrepreneurship and Digital Transformation: Managing Disruptive Innovation in a Changing Environment The advent of digital technologies and the current environmental turbulence is fundamentally changing the way firms compete, eroding firm's boundaries and transforming value creation processes (Jonsson et al., 2018). The digital transformation invokes visions, ranging from the disruption of entire industries to the rethinking of its fundamental business model or its place in the value chain. This digital transformation encompasses the process of using digital technologies to create new business processes, new entrepreneurial activities, or modify the existing ones, culture and customer experiences to meet changing business and market requirements (Ransbotham et al., 2016). There is no doubt that digital technologies have the potential to foster disruptive innovation and disruptive entrepreneurial activity in a wide range of sectors, both in manufacturing and services, as well as in commercial, educational and social domains (Christensen et al., 2006). In spite of the current relevance of disruptive innovation in academic and business circles, a better understanding of the phenomenon, which help firms to successfully innovate, is needed. In this regard, the current Research Topic encompass a body of work including contributions from a total of 50 authors of different universities from 11 countries. Therefore, we can affirm it has a global character, collecting research works from three different continents: Europe (Germany, Italy, Lithuania, Romania, Slovenia, Spain, UK); Asia (China, Pakistan, Singapore) and Oceania (Australia). This collection is composed by 14 original research papers, examining three main topics: (1) analysis of entrepreneurship and entrepreneurial education; (2) digital transformation and digital technologies (including Social Media tools); and (3) disruptive innovation and disruptive impact of Covid-19. In next paragraphs, we describe briefly the different studies, grouped in the aforementioned thematic blocks. First, different authors explored the topic of entrepreneurship and entrepreneurial education. In this vein, Junaid et al. examined the impact of informal institutions in promoting entrepreneurial activities. Examining data from 56 countries, results confirm how institutional antecedents combine distinctly for men's and women's entrepreneurship and this combination varies in countries with different stages of economic development. Kumpikaité-Valiuniené et al. focused its analysis in the figure of “expat-preneurs,” examining the main factors that lead expatriates to develop entrepreneurial activities in foreign countries. Findings display the main demographic characteristics and motivation of expat-preneurs in a Lithuanian context. Additionally, several papers focused in the phenomenon of entrepreneurial education, provident relevant guidance and practical implications for institutions. For example, Ma et al. drawing on Fuzzy-DEMATEL and ISM methods developed a hierarchical framework for the application of big data technology in entrepreneurship education, which can be helpful for managers to organize educational activities from a macro perspective. Pérez-Fernández et al. empirically examined the role that social and psychological factors play in fostering entrepreneurial activities. Focusing on a sample of higher education students in Spain, results confirm the impact of online and face-to-face social networks, as well as positive dispositional affectivity on students' entrepreneurial intention. Finally, Martínez-Martínez and Ventura quantitatively examined the key role of entrepreneurial competences among students, providing a useful classification of entrepreneurial profiles. Findings highlight the relevance of networking and professional social skills, community engagement, or perseverance of effort, and offer interesting implications for universities, to foster entrepreneurial education. Second, considering the current relevance of digital transformation and digital technologies, several papers of the Research Topic examined the issue. From a theoretical perspective, Vaska et al. conducted a structured review of the literature analyzing the development of the digital transformation field, and exploring the impact of digital technologies on business model innovation. Results describe the state of this emerging research field and provide interesting avenues for future research. From a more practical perspective, to explore the process of firms' adoption of digital strategies, Aramburu et al. empirically examined how SMEs develop digitalization processes, and the main capabilities involved. Findings confirm that digital mindset, digital mindset and empowered employees are key factors to develop a digitally enabled growth strategy. In the same vein, Roblek et al. explored the impact of digital transformation on manufacturing SMEs, and highlight key success factors to conduct disruptive innovations, offering relevant implications for practitioners. Other articles particularly focused on the analysis of Social Media tools, as they are considered key techonologies enabling business transformation and digitalization (Aral et al., 2013), which have disrupted entire industries. In this vein, Popescul et al. theoretically examined the success factors of Social Media-based crowdfunding campaigns for start-up projects, and highlight the main determinants of investors decisions, providing practical implications for platforms' managers. Drawing on the current relevance of Social Media use and electronic word-of-mouth (eWOM) for firms, Sánchez-González and González-Fernández empirically examined the antecedents of eWOM in the hotel industry. Hospitality firms are facing unprecedented challenges on a global scale. The catastrophic effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and its multiple devastating global consequences have initiated a profoundly disruptive transformation in the hospitality sector, as firms attempt to adapt their activity to the current uncertain scenario. This study draws on the crisis management literature to identify the key drivers of hotel recovery in the event of a disaster or an external crisis, like current pandemic. A sample of 237 Spanish hotel managers evaluated and ranked the strategic measures. Based on this evidence, measures were statistically examined to identify which ranked as most significant in helping hospitality managers. The results yield valuable theoretical and practical insights to guide hospitality managers towards business adaptation and recovery by highlighting key strategic measures for implementation in the short term.

Crisis requires society to renew itself, albeit in a disruptive way. The current Covid-19 pandemic is transforming ways of working, living, and relating to each other on a global level, suddenly and dramatically. This paper focuses on the field of education to show how higher education institutions are undergoing radical transformations driven by the need to digitalize education and training processes in record time with academics who lack innate technological capabilities for online teaching. The university system must strive to overcome this situation to be competitive and provide high-quality education in a scenario of digital transformation, disruptive technological innovations, and accelerated change. To achieve these goals, this paper explains some barriers and challenges that universities encounter, as well as technological resources and methodologies they have used in the current scenario to transform higher education to face Covid-19 disruption. The discussion and conclusion synthesize significant insights that can be applied to the digitalization of education in the foreseeable future.

Climate change, overpopulation and the squandering of resources currently pose problems of such magnitude that they require a change in the trend to mitigate their effects. It is essential to make society aware of the facts and to educate the population about the advantages that new technologies can provide for efficient urban development. We therefore ask whether an ordinary medium-sized city can become a Smart City. In order to assess this possibility, our study analyzes different models of Smart Cities implemented in Spain (e.g., Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Malaga and Santander), contrasting them with the specific case of one city that is not yet a Smart City (Granada) in order to discuss which strategic technological actions to implement in different topical areas of action: the economy, sustainability, mobility, government, population, and quality of life. The study uses Cohen’s wheel to give researchers in the field a series of indicators and factors that can be used to analyze public data with statistical methods in order to obtain clear positive scores for Madrid and Barcelona. The analysis shows Granada’s deficiencies in the scores for digital government, accessibility, the efficiency of public transport, and mobility, among others. Finally, the data obtained demonstrate the need to implement an integrated dashboard with different proposals in the strategic areas analyzed in order to achieve the transformation of conventional cities into Smart Cities.

Social Media encourages networks in the complex and dynamic environment within which firms are immersed. The purpose of this study is to analyze the role and impact of Social Media on complexity variables and organizational performance. More specifically, we explore the presence of elements of “spontaneous order creation”: heterogeneous agents with motives to connect with each other, and their impact on innovativeness and dissipative structures. The research model was tested on a sample of 201 technology firms through Structural Equation Modelling (SEM). Our research contributes to extant literature by exploring the impact of digitally enabled networks (Social Media) on complexity dynamics through analysis of their influence on firm performance. We aim to advance explanation of how increasing complexity changes behavioral dynamics in complex ecosystems, and how information and Social Media can be used to cope with the new managerial challenges posed by increasing digital complexity.

The strategic use of Social Media can leverage innovation, relationships with customers, and the entrepreneurial orientation of the firm, as it provides useful knowledge to find new opportunities for innovation. Despite the relevance of this phenomenon to current hyper-competitive environments, empirical research on the topic remains scarce. To advance knowledge of this issue, the main purpose of the paper is to examine how Social Media use impacts the different dimensions of Corporate Entrepreneurship. Building on a sample of 201 technological firms, findings confirm that the use of Social Media tools impacted all dimensions of Corporate Entrepreneurship and enhanced firm performance. This paper contributes to the literature by empirically confirming how Social Media use helps to create business value. The study results also have important implications for managers, as they show the pathway managers must follow to harness the benefits of Social Media use to become more entrepreneurial.

University students will be our future business leaders, and will have to address social problems caused by business by implementing solutions such as social entrepreneurship ventures. In order to facilitate the learning process that will foster social entrepreneurship, however, a more holistic pedagogy is needed. Based on learning theory, we propose that students’ social entrepreneurship actions will depend on their learning about CSR and their absorptive capacity. We propose that instructors and higher education institutions can enhance this absorptive capacity by exploiting Web 2.0 technologies. We tested our proposition with a sample of 425 university students using structural equation modeling and found support for the proposed relationships.

Drawing on a dynamic capabilities perspective and a resource-based view, this article analyzes the relationship between absorptive capacity and corporate entrepreneurship, and their combined effect on organizations’ performance. It contributes to the literature by dissociating the dimensions of absorptive capacity (potential and realized) and corporate entrepreneurship (innovativeness, proactiveness, new business venturing, and self-renewal). A quantitative study was performed with data gathered by personal interviews, using a structured questionnaire. The theoretical model was estimated through a structural equation model, using a sample of 168 Spanish firms. The results show that proactiveness positively influences innovativeness and that both proactiveness and innovativeness have a positive influence on potential and realized absorptive capacity. A significant positive relationship also exists between potential and realized absorptive capacity. Furthermore, realized absorptive capacity positively influences new business venturing and self-renewal. Finally, proactiveness and new business venturing directly and positively influence organizational performance, but not innovativeness and self-renewal. The study demonstrates that entrepreneurs must be able to enhance potential and realize absorptive capacities at the same time in order to improve the end performance of their corporate entrepreneurial projects. Both absorptive capacities are strongly related to corporate entrepreneurial activities and have a strong influence on firms’ performance.

Protected areas (PAs) constitute the largest global effort for biodiversity conservation and the maintenance of ecosystem services. Science-based management, grounded in methods co-designed by scientists and managers, is necessary to improve the efficiency of PAs to achieve these goals and to promote sustainable development. Visitor centres (VCs) in PAs play an important role to facilitate the supply of recreational ecosystem services and to promote environmental awareness. In this study, scientists and managers co-developed a method to assess visitors' perceptions of the recreational activities carried out in VCs and how they depend on the type of visitors. The research was performed at 13 PAs in Andalusia (Spain). A questionnaire that measures users' satisfaction with the services provided by VCs was implemented in two phases: 1) selection of items through the critical incident technique, and 2) validation of the scale by using exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis. The main result is an instrument composed of 18 indicators classified into three dimensions: information, facilities and service received from personnel. The instrument provides additional information useful for managers, such as homogeneity of valuation throughout the PA network and sociocultural factors that may explain the differences in visitors' valuation. The instrument developed could either be used directly or adapted for recreation management in other similar PAs. The proposed methodology can also be reproduced to validate other measurement instruments. This study illustrates how the development of a collaborative research method by scholars and practitioners can improve recreational management in PAs.

Social Media has transformed the way firms relate to their markets. Hotels all over the world are increasingly using these tools, integrating them into their Customer Relationship Management (CRM) strategies to engage customers in active conversations. The use of Social Networking and Review Sites, like TripAdvisor, has become all pervasive, and hotels are investing large sums of money in engaging customers via Social Media. However, there is a certain degree of skepticism about how these technologies can help to create value. To shed light on the topic, based on a sample of 222 Spanish hotels, this study examines the real impact of Social Media use, showing the key role played by Social CRM Capabilities in the process of value creation with these tools. By building on the Resource-Based theory, the proposed model shows the pathway between Social Media use and organizational performance, in terms of profitability, sales and customer retention.

Organizational innovation is increasingly mandatory for firms to overcome their competitors. Organizational innovation is especially relevant in today’s dynamic and turbulent environments, where other internal variables—such as technological assets, employee training, coordination of new management capabilities, and new flexible human resources and more adaptable organizational designs—must be encouraged to create value and competitive advantage. The purpose of our research is to analyse whether technological assets influence absorptive capacity (potential and realized absorptive capacity) and how absorptive capacity influences internal labour flexibility, organizational innovation and performance. We achieve these goals by analysing the interrelations among internal labour flexibility, organizational innovation and performance, using the theory of resources and capabilities. A quantitative study was carried out with data gathered by personal interview using a structured questionnaire. Relationships proposed in the theoretical model were estimated through a structural equation model, using a sample of 160 European technology companies. The results show that support for technology and improvement of technological skills and technological distinctive competencies promote improvement in organizational performance through their positive influence on the processes of potential and realized absorption capacity. Potential absorptive capacity influences realized absorptive capacity, which impacts not only internal labour flexibility but also organizational innovation and organizational performance. Further, internal labour flexibility influences organizational performance through organizational innovation. This issue is of particular interest when considering the dynamic nature of turbulent technological environments in which the organization operates. Technological assets thus identify new sources of flexibility and organizational innovation based on deeper contextual knowledge and tools that aid knowledge capacity in the company.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to show how social media technologies (SMT) make the firm proficient to act on business opportunities and reconfigure business resources by encouraging networks to routinize the firm’s knowledge and innovation competencies. Design/methodology/approach The paper analyzes data obtained from a sample of 201 technological firms located in Spain. Structural equation modeling with Lisrel is used to test the hypotheses. Findings This paper contributes to the literature by reflecting empirically in a structural model how SMT drive technological knowledge competencies to improve organizational performance directly and indirectly by leveraging processes of innovation capability in the firm. Research limitations/implications The study has some limitations, among them transversal analysis of different constructs. The number of relationships analyzed is limited, as is the literature focuses on a digital vision from a social media point of view. Practical implications Some implications for managers emerge. SMT both enable an emergent participatory culture through ubiquitous digital devices and social networks and balance constant connectivity afforded by digital devices. Originality/value Drawing on complexity science, the authors develop a conceptual framework to explain how social media, as emergent IS phenomena, help firms to create business value, leveraging network effects and knowledge flows, and increasing innovative capability.

This research seeks to analyze how factors such as the environment, stakeholder integration capability, absorptive capacity, and technological skills influence corporate entrepreneurship, and the repercussions of corporate entrepreneurship for the organization’s results. The hypotheses are tested empirically using a sample of 160 European technology firms. A positive relationship is found between the factors of the environment and stakeholder integration capability, and corporate entrepreneurship. The uncertainty and complexity of the environment in which the organization operates and its relationship with stakeholders require the firm to be involved in constant updating, collaboration between parties, and innovation of processes, products, and system to maintain competitive advantage. Further, the capacity to absorb new knowledge and develop technological skills can generate new, advanced technological processes. These processes foster corporate entrepreneurship to detect opportunities on the market and transform them into additional advantage over competitors. Corporate entrepreneurship increases organizational performance, as it entrusts entrepreneurs with the task of utilizing potentially value-creating resources more effectively than competitors.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to propose a research model exploring the link between knowledge management processes and customer relationship management (CRM) performance. It seeks to answer two research questions: What are the effective drivers of knowledge management processes in the context of a CRM initiative? Do these processes make a real impact on CRM performance? Design/methodology/approach – The paper is based on data obtained from a sample of 93 service companies located in Spain. The authors conducted a structural equation modeling analysis using PLS to test the proposed hypotheses. Findings – It was observed that both technological and organizational readiness were effective drivers of knowledge management. However, it was contrasted also that the usage of social media tools was not significantly related to knowledge management. Results show a real impact of knowledge management processes on CRM performance, so companies can understand how to implement successfully those initiatives. Research limitations/implications – The main limitations of the study are that it was based on cross-sectional data and that variables were measured based on the perceptions of general managers. Practical implications – Service companies need to invest in technological infrastructures, and create an appropriate organizational climate (top management support, employees commitment) in order to promote effective knowledge management processes, that will enable CRM success, paving the way for the development of marketing innovations. Originality/value – This is the first empirical work that examines in confirmatory way what are the main drivers of knowledge management processes, including in the analysis the impact of both organizational and technological readiness, and considering also the usage of social media tools, in the context of a CRM initiative.

This research analyses, first, whether top management support for information and communications technologies has positive consequences for knowledge management by analysing the specific influence of top management support for ICTs on each of the knowledge management processes (knowledge acquisition, transfer, and utilisation). Second, it analyses the influence of each knowledge management process on organisational performance. The theoretical model is tested using data collected from March to May 2010 from 201 CEOs in Spanish technology organisations. The results indicate that the stage-based disaggregation of the knowledge management process into knowledge acquisition, transfer, and utilisation, and the three-stage management process are the mediating mechanisms in the relationship between top management support for ICTs and organisational performance. CEOs should thus support the information and communication technologies necessary to improve all of the interrelated stages of knowledge management as a mechanism for achieving better organisational performance. Various strategic actions should be stimulated within the organisation to intensify the interrelation between these stages of acquisition, transfer, and utilisation of knowledge.

The emergence of new global competitors, the convergence of high-technology industries and the increasing speed and cost of technological development promises an increasingly uncertain environment for organisations, making adaptation to changes in the environment a central theme in the study of the organisation for both organisation theory and strategic management. This study thus seeks principally to verify that, while innovation and quality management (QM) alone do not possess the qualities required to provide organisations with sustainable competitive advantages, the bundle of innovation and QM together with other resources and competencies will allow organisations to obtain a competitive advantage and adapt to their environment. The results show that the factors determining innovation – such as resistance to change, cohesion and workload pressures – have repercussions for the firms’ capacity to adapt to their environmentand that a QM context facilitates this adaptation. Finally, we can conclude that a climate of support for innovation is positively related to the organisation’s performance.
