Introduction: China is one of the major producers and exporters of various kinds of citrus fruits. As one of China’s major citrus planting bases, Sichuan has a citrus planting area that exceeds 400,000 hectares. Meanwhile, citrus cultivation has become one of the important agricultural pillar industries in the region. Citrus fruits are reported to show various health-promoting effects, especially antioxidant activity. However, reports on the functional, nutritional and qualitative characteristics of different citrus varieties in Sichuan are still scarce. Methods: The quality attributes (color parameters, shape, and size), juice properties (titratable acids and total soluble sugar), mineral elements, and health-promoting nutritional and functional components (protein, carbohydrates, fat, dietary fiber, ascorbic acid, phenolic acids, and flavonoids), as well as antioxidant properties of 10 typical citrus varieties cultivated in Sichuan, were systematically investigated and analyzed. Results and Discussion: Significant differences among different citrus varieties were found. In particular, the total soluble sugar content of Mingrijian was higher than that of other citrus, suggesting its potential for fresh consumption and food processing. Moreover, a total of five flavonoids and nine phenolic acids were identified and quantified. Yuanhong, with higher contents of ascorbic acid and phenolic acids, was considered to be a valuable variety with excellent antioxidant capacity and can be used for value-added processing in the food industry. Principal component analysis and hierarchical cluster heatmap analysis suggested that there were significant differences among the 10 citrus varieties. Correlation analysis confirmed the significant contribution of ascorbic acid and phenolic acids to antioxidant capacity in citrus. The results can provide some references for the cultivation and selection of nutritious citrus fruits.

High‐efficiency monoculture severely inhibits the growth of Salvia miltiorrhiza Bge and decreases the yield and quality of crude drug, thus resulting in serious economic losses in China. Here, we selected four replanted field soils with 1, 2, 3, and 4 years of monoculture history to investigate the influence of continuous monocropping soil on the property of medicinal materials by pot experiments. Results showed that the commodity appearance and active ingredient contents of Salvia miltiorrhiza were significantly affected by soil with different continuous monocropping years. Along the time series of plantation soil, the diameter of main roots, weight of fresh roots, and total contents of hydrophilic and lipophilic components demonstrated a decline tendency. With the method of PCA, the property of medicinal materials affected by continuous monocropping soil was evaluated by the following formula: F = (0.3762 × F1 + 0.2320 × F2 + 0.1913 × F3 + 0.0994 × F4)/0.8989. Eventually, crude drug properties ranked according to comprehensive scores were as follows: CK (0.380) > 1 year (0.360) > 2 years (0.348) > 3 years (0.337) > 4 years (0.245). For the medicinal plant of Salvia miltiorrhiza Bge, continuous monocropping soil had significant effects on the property of Salvia miltiorrhiza and should be ameliorated by some measures. The results provide support for the optimal continuous cropping year selection and continuous cropping obstacle abatement of Salvia miltiorrhiza Bge.

Lonicerae japonicae flos (LJF), the dried flower buds of Lonicera japonica Thunb., are often adulterated with Lonicerae. flos (LF), which is derived from the other four Lonicera species. Scholars at home and abroad have established several analytical methods to distinguish LJF from the four Lonicera species of LF; however, to date, no effective and practical method has been established for distinguishing LF from LJF. In our present study, the HPLC fingerprints of LJF and LF were compared, and differences in the content of one of the iridoids were found. Column chromatography combined with pre-HPLC was used for isolating and preparing the iridoid, and its structure was identified as secologanic acid. Then, a method for determining the content of secologanic acid was established using HPLC. The amounts of secologanic acid in 34 batches of LJF and 38 batches of LF were determined. The average amount of secologanic acid in 34 batches of LJF was 18.24 mg/g, with values ranging from 12.9 mg/g to 23.3 mg/g, whereas the average amount in 38 batches of LF was 1.76 mg/g, with values ranging from 0.2 mg/g to 7.2 mg/g. Therefore, secologanic acid can be considered as one of the characteristic components for distinguishing LJF and LF. Our study not only provides a rapid, simple, sensitive, and practical method for identifying LJF and LF but also establishes a method for discovering the characteristic components of other herb-medicines that are susceptible to adulteration.

Fructus Meliae Toosendan (FMT) is the dried and mature fruit of MeLia toosendan Sieb.et Zucc. It contains a variety of chemical constituents and reported to possess a variety of pharmacological activities. This review aims to provide a thorough and organized summary of botany, traditional uses, chemical ingredients, pharmacological actions, toxicity, quality control, and uses. In this review, we have compiled the data regarding FMT from 1994 to 2022 in the databases: Web of Science, PubMed, Google Scholar, CNKI, and Baidu Scholar. The keywords: "Fructus Meliae Toosendan", "botany", "traditional uses","chemical components", "pharmacological activity", "toxicity", "quality control" and "clinical application" have been used to collected the literature published in the online bibliographic databases. Based on the correlation of these documents and FMT, 126 articles were finally selected as references. This paper provides a reasonable summary of the 190 chemical components of FMT and its pharmacological effects and toxicity. Moreover, this paper also compiled the quality control studies and clinical applications. In the future, more experimental studies on FMT are needed to achieve the purpose of toxicity reducing and efficacy enhancing. This comprehensive review of FMT can provide a reference for subsequent relevant studies.
