Biography

Dr. Gemma Gabriel is currently a permanent researcher at the Biomedical Applications Group in the Microelectronics Institute of Barcelona, which, since 2015, also forms part of the GBIO group belonging to the CIBER-BBN (Center for Biomedical Research in Bioengineering, Biomaterials and Nanomedicine). Also, she has been an Associate Professor at the Department of Analytical Chemistry at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) since 2020. She graduated in Chemistry (UAB in 2000) and obtained a Ph.D. in Materials Science (UAB in 2005). Her postdoctoral experience began with the development of sensors with microelectronic technology for neural applications and later she focused her research on multiparametric platforms for monitoring cell cultures and their analytes of interest (mainly, oxygen, pH, sodium, and potassium ions). Her work is transversal and goes from the design of the sensor, its manufacturing with microelectronic technology, and finally to its characterization for the required applications. In 2015, she started a line of research using printing technologies, specifically inkjet printing, for the manufacturing of low-cost electrochemical sensors on flexible polymeric substrates and paper. Her immediate future is focused on expanding the typology of measurable analytes, paying particular attention to the research and development of functional materials and eco-sustainable printable materials for transducers for sensors in the medical or environmental field.
