Information security has always been a critical issue in wireless networks. Apart from other secure techniques, covert communication emerges as a potential solution to security for wireless networks owing to its high-security level. In covert communication networks, the transmitter hides the transmitted signals into environmental or artificial noise by introducing randomness to avoid detection at the warden. By eliminating the existence of transmitted signals at the warden, information security can be preserved more solidly than other secure transmission techniques, i.e., without noticing the existence. Due to the promising security protection, covert communication has been successfully utilized in tremendous wireless communication scenarios. However, fundamental challenges in its practical implementation still exist, e.g., the effectiveness of randomness utilization, the low signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio at legitimate users, etc. In this survey, we demonstrate a comprehensive review concentrating on the applications, solutions, and future challenges of covert communications. Specifically, the covert principle and research categories are first introduced. Then, the applications in the networks with different topologies and the effective covert techniques in the existing literature are reviewed. We also discuss the potential implementation of covert communications in future networks and the open challenges.

Orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) modulation outperforms orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) in high-mobility scenarios. One challenge for OTFS massive MIMO is downlink channel estimation due to the large number of base station antennas. In this paper, we propose a 3D structured orthogonal matching pursuit algorithm based channel estimation technique to solve this problem. First, we show that the OTFS MIMO channel exhibits 3D structured sparsity: normal sparsity along the delay dimension, block sparsity along the Doppler dimension, and burst sparsity along the angle dimension. Based on the 3D structured channel sparsity, we then formulate the downlink channel estimation problem as a sparse signal recovery problem. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can achieve accurate channel state information with low pilot overhead.

Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites undergo a period of rapid development driven by ever-increasing user demands, reduced costs, and technological progress. Since there is a lack of literature on the security and reliability issues of LEO Satellite Communication Systems (SCSs), we aim to fill this knowledge gap. Specifically, we critically appraise the inherent characteristics of LEO SCSs and elaborate on their security and reliability requirements. In light of this, we further discuss their vulnerabilities, including potential security attacks launched against them and reliability risks, followed by outlining the associated lessons learned. Subsequently, we discuss the corresponding security and reliability enhancement solutions, unveil a range of trade-offs, and summarize the lessons gleaned. Furthermore, we shed light on several promising future research directions for enhancing the security and reliability of LEO SCSs, such as integrated sensing and communication, computer vision aided communications, as well as challenges brought about by mega-constellation and commercialization. Finally, we summarize the lessons inferred and crystallize the take-away messages in our design guidelines.

The combination of large bandwidth at terahertz (THz) and the large number of antennas in massive MIMO results in the non-negligible spatial wideband effect in time domain or the corresponding beam squint issue in frequency domain, which will cause severe performance degradation if not properly treated. In particular, for a phased array based hybrid transceiver, there exists a contradiction between the requirement of mitigating the beam squint issue and the hardware implementation of the analog beamformer/combiner, which makes the accurate beamforming an enormous challenge. In this paper, we propose two wideband hybrid beamforming approaches, based on the virtual sub-array and the true-time-delay (TTD) lines, respectively, to eliminate the impact of beam squint. The former one divides the whole array into several virtual sub-arrays to generate a wider beam and provides an evenly distributed array gain across the whole operating frequency band. To further enhance the beamforming performance and thoroughly address the aforementioned contradiction, the latter one introduces the TTD lines and propose a new hardware implementation of analog beamformer/combiner. This TTD-aided hybrid implementation enables the wideband beamforming and achieves the near-optimal performance close to full-digital transceivers. Analytical and numerical results demonstrate the effectiveness of two proposed wideband beamforming approaches.

Utilizing unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) as the relay is an effective technical solution for the wireless communication between ground terminals faraway or obstructed. In this letter, the problems of UAV node placement and communication resource allocation are investigated jointly for a UAV relaying system for the first time. Multiple communication pairs on the ground, with one rotary-wing UAV serving as relay, are considered. Transmission power, bandwidth, transmission rate, and UAV's position are optimized jointly to maximize the system throughput. An optimization problem is formulated, which is non-convex. The global optimal solution is achieved by transforming the formulated problem to be a monotonic optimization problem.

With the benefits of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) and intelligent reflecting surface (IRS), they can be combined to further enhance the communication performance. However, the high-quality air-ground channel is more vulnerable to the adversarial eavesdropping. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a covert communication scheme assisted by the UAV-IRS to maximize the covert transmission rate. Specifically, the ground transmitter, Alice, secretly delivers the private message to a legitimate receiver, Bob, via the UAV-IRS, wishing that the transmission will not be observable by the warden, Willie. In addition, Willie is adversarial to Alice and the UAV-IRS, which makes his accurate location difficult to obtain. Given this fact, we first determine an optimal detection threshold and derive the error detection probability at Willie, which is the worst-case situation for the legitimate transmission. Then, we maximize the covert transmission rate by alternatively optimizing the transmit power of Alice, the IRS phase shift and the horizontal location of UAV-IRS subject to the covert requirements. Numerical results are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed covert communication scheme assisted by UAV-IRS.
