Professor Yannay Casas-Ledón is an Associate Professor of the Environmental Engineering Department at the Universidad de Concepción. She earned her Ph.D. in Applied Biological Sciences from Ghent University, Belgium, in 2012. Her expertise lies in thermodynamics (exergy analysis) and environmental impact assessment, focusing on life cycle frameworks, the circular economy, and the water–energy–food nexus. Professor Casas-Ledón has authored numerous scientific articles applying Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) to innovative processes, including biomass and solid waste valorization, and has written a book detailing the theoretical and practical aspects of LCA. She has led several research projects investigating the impact of renewable energy development on ecosystem services. Her work emphasizes incorporating sustainability criteria into agricultural and industrial waste (e.g., plastics) valorization within the circular economy framework. Currently, her research focuses on evaluating human interventions in ecosystem services. She explores potential trade-offs between renewable energy supply and ecosystem services using Geographic Information Systems (GIS), the ecosystem service approach, and exergy analysis.
